Grand finale of 2nd Life Pakistan 2.0 held

KARACHI: Some six standout teams were awarded cash prizes totaling Rs 2.625 million to further develop and scale their climate innovation projects at the grand finale of 2nd Life Pakistan 2.0 - a national climate innovation programme. These included winners from both the growth and idea stages of the competition.
Hosted by SEED Ventures in collaboration with Unilever Pakistan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Pakistan serving as the Secretariat for the National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP), the event marked the conclusion of a six-month journey into circular economy entrepreneurship, spotlighting startups that view waste not as a problem but as a possibility.
The programme has redefined how entrepreneurship can contribute to climate resilience, demonstrating that circularity is not just a concept; it is a practical path to a cleaner, stronger, and more inclusive Pakistan.
The showcase brought together climate-focused startups, policymakers, and sustainability leaders to highlight innovative solutions for rethinking waste. With support through mentorship and business development, over 30 young ventures from across Pakistan turned environmental challenges into scalable, impact-driven businesses, tackling everything from e-waste and textiles to food scraps and agri by-products.
Lance Domm, British Deputy High Commissioner, shared his optimism during the event and said that it is inspiring to see how young Pakistanis are creating practical, scalable solutions to environmental challenges.
'2nd Life Pakistan 2.0 reflects the innovation and commitment our youth bring to building a greener, more sustainable future,' he added.
Tariq Ali Nizamani, MD of Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, also lent his voice to the celebration. Speaking on the importance of youth-led climate action, he said that Pakistan's climate journey cannot move forward without innovation and action from its youth. Sterling at five-week low against dollar as markets mull Middle East risk

LONDON: The pound fell against the dollar on Monday with the greenback benefiting from safe-haven demand as investors assessed the risk of an Iranian response to U.S. attacks on its nuclear sites. By 1054 GMT the pound was down 0.5% versus the dollar at $1.33795, its lowest level since May 20. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke to U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday, his office said. Starmer also urged Iran to return to the negotiating table. Market focus is firmly on the price of oil, which earlier spiked as much as 5.7% and was last up 0.5%. 'Ultimately the pound is exposed…Pro-cyclical currencies have a negative sensitivity to oil prices,' said Francesco Pesole, FX strategist at ING. Elsewhere, UK flash PMIs hit screens showing business activity expanded modestly in June, but the data barely moved the needle on the pound. The S&P Global UK Composite Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 50.7 from 50.3 in May - edging further above the 50.0 growth threshold. Sterling gain slightly against dollar 'Overall, the PMIs suggest that the biggest hit to the economy was in April and things are now starting to recover. That said, the subdued level of the PMIs is still pointing to near stagnation,' Thomas Pugh, chief economist at RSM UK, wrote in a note. The Bank of England held interest rates at 4.25% last Thursday as expected but flagged a weaker labour market and the risk of higher energy prices as conflict in the Middle East escalated. Despite the hold, market watchers took a doveish hint from the 6-3 vote split in favour of keeping rates on hold, with three MPC members in favour of a cut, a factor that is still playing a role according to ING's Pesole. 'Markets are still tending towards the doveish side for the pound curve,' he said. As of Monday, 58% of traders were betting on a 25-bps rate cut at the BoE's next session in August, with 42% betting on no change.

'These improvements are anticipated to result in increased profitability and shareholder value, thereby strengthening the company's financial position and competitive standing in the market,' it said. The company was of the view that the right issue is being carried out at a price, which is near the current market price, and hence, there is no major risk associated with it. Pakistan's ‘first operator-led angel investing network' launched

A private, invite-only angel investing network called Dastak has been launched by entrepreneur Saif Ali, designed to support high-growth Pakistani startups across tech, direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands, and services businesses. According to a statement, Dastak brings together seasoned operators, corporate executives, and investors from Pakistan and the diaspora to back 'ambitious founders with more than just capital.' Pakistan's startups face capital crunch, need urgent reforms: i2i report 'I'm not here to chase unicorns. I'm here to help a generation of Pakistanis build companies that put food on the table, pride in the product, and power back in the hands of young people,' Ali told Business Recorder. 'Pakistan will continue to face economic headwinds in the years ahead. The only way our youth can create real change is by building new companies, hundreds or even thousands of them,' he said, adding: 'this can only happen if we mobilize both local capital and local experience.' As per the release announcing the statement, Dastak is built on a premise that has talent but needs 'deeper backing' and it wants to curate a network of strategic angels, thereby simplifying the path to early-stage investment. The network is sector-agnostic with a focus on tech and SaaS; direct-to-consumer brands and modern services - margin-rich services businesses which it said are often overlooked by traditional venture capital investors. Rather than functioning as a fund or platform, Dastak says it facilitates direct investments. Startups gain exposure to operator-angels who have built and scaled companies themselves, while angels get access to vetted deals, legal coordination, and a streamlined investment process. The current group includes founders, C-level operators, and investment professionals spanning fintech, logistics, consumer technology, SaaS, and IT services, both within Pakistan and the diaspora abroad. While individual names are not being disclosed publicly at this stage, access to the network is currently limited to those who bring deep operational experience alongside capital. To ensure regulatory clarity, Dastak says it does not offer investment advice, manage funds, or guarantee returns. It facilitates access to vetted startup opportunities and provides advisory support where helpful. Investment decisions are made solely by individual angels. The initiative's aim is to lowers the barrier to angel investing while helping startups benefit from the mentorship and expertise of experienced professionals.
