Richmond's Love Letter is an ode to Yorkshire puddings, gravy and chaos
Perry and Bellamy go to Vic Market three times a week to see what their favourite vendors have put aside for them. They turn the spoils into good-value feasting for the $49 feed-me menu on Wednesdays, and steak nights on the Thursday and Friday when you might find a fancy surf'n'turf with wagyu eye-fillet and exquisite Skull Island prawns, or porterhouse with Moreton Bay bug. The approach is over the top, exuberant and generous.
Drinking is adventurous and accessible. I love the Campari served in a mini frosted-glass 1930s bottle for pouring over ice and an orange slice. There's a wine blackboard with weekly glasses, carafes and bottles listed by colour and weight, which is a nice way to stretch and learn. Most wines make the list after a local winemaker brings them in and chats the team through a tasting.
Service is eager and caring, a love letter enacted for every table. The very idea of fine dining can feel exclusionary, something that other people do, but Love Letter rewrites the template. The restaurant is down-to-earth, personal and cheerily obsessed with making people happy, a fine formula for dining indeed.
Three more restaurants redefining fine dining
Cutler
It opened 13 years ago as Cutler & Co, and chef and co-owner Andrew McConnell has given his flagship a few rethinks over the years. Now it's simply Cutler, with a poised bistro menu and an all-class no-fuss feeling. Wednesday Cellar Nights mean $30 corkage and shared dishes that match well with Bordeaux and Burgundy.
55-57 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, cutlerandco.com.au
Regale
Cafe empress Sutinee Suntivatana owns Humble Rays and matcha specialist Tori's, and now also has Regale in the Old Carlton Brewhouse at the top end of the city. The Asian fusion menu includes chicken rigatoni with gochujang vodka sauce and smashed olives, and sticky rice and white chocolate mousse with corn relish.
555 Swanston Street, Carlton, regaler.com.au
The Roe
A backstreet warehouse is now a temple to sea urchin. They're served raw, rolled up in spring rolls, infused into broths, tucked into fried rice and arranged in colourful bowls with other seafood. An invasive and feral species, eating sea urchins is also conservation.

Tyler Perry sued for sexual harassment and assault
An actor on the US BET television show The Oval has filed a civil lawsuit that accuses media mogul Tyler Perry of repeated sexual assault and harassment. Derek Dixon is seeking $US260 million ($A402 million) in punitive damages from Perry in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court and reported by TMZ on Tuesday. In the suit, Dixon accuses Perry of "a sustained pattern of workplace sexual harassment, assault and retaliation". A lawyer for Perry called the lawsuit "a scam". "This is an individual who got close to Tyler Perry for what now appears to be nothing more than a scam," lawyer Matthew Boyd said in a statement. "But Tyler Perry will not be shaken down and we are confident these fabricated claims of harassment will fail." Perry is a successful actor, writer and producer of dozens of TV shows and films, including the Madea movie series. Forbes estimates his net worth at $US1.4 billion. The lawsuit claims Perry met Dixon when he was working on the event staff at a party Perry was hosting, and that Perry offered him a role on the series Ruthless in 2019 and a bigger part later on The Oval. Dixon alleges that Perry sent unwanted, sexually suggestive text messages to him. The suit includes screenshots of what it said were exchanges between the two. "What's it going to take for you to have guiltless sex?" said one of the messages that Dixon said was from Perry. After the messages, Perry's behaviour escalated to sexual assault, the lawsuit said. One night at Perry's home, the lawsuit said, Perry told Dixon he was too drunk to drive and urged him to stay in a guest room. Dixon said he woke up in the middle of the night to find Perry in bed with him and rubbing his thigh. In another case, Perry "forcibly pulled off Mr Dixon's clothing, groped his buttocks and attempted to force himself on Dixon", the lawsuit said. Dixon tried to remain friendly with Perry while rebuffing his advances in order to keep his job, the lawsuit said. 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732) National Sexual Abuse and Redress Support Service 1800 211 028 An actor on the US BET television show The Oval has filed a civil lawsuit that accuses media mogul Tyler Perry of repeated sexual assault and harassment. Actor sues Tyler Perry for $260 million over sexual assault allegations
'To Di For' podcast host Kinsey Schofield discusses the 'very damaging' lawsuit against Tyler Perry by Derek Dixon. Derek Dixon is suing Tyler Perry for $260 million over alleged sexual assault and harassment claims. 'They met at an event in 2019 where Perry allegedly picked this guy out of the crowd, and he claims he was given a role at this event that required frequent conversations with Tyler Perry,' Ms Schofield told Sky News host Rita Panahi. 'The conversations are pretty icky. 'He [Perry] denies the allegations, but he [Dixon] says Perry initially promised him career advancement and creative opportunities. 'Perry's counsel calls this lawsuit a scam and says that this person is just trying to take advantage of Tyler Perry.'
