Four charged over suspected involvement in ‘blessing' scams

SINGAPORE: Three women and a man have been charged in court over allegedly cheating victims of cash and gold in 'blessing' scams.
Chinese nationals Zhong Weifeng, 58, Huang Ximing, 61, Huang Meiling, 56, and Huang Qinyan, 47, were charged with conspiracy to cheat on Friday (June 6).
On June 2, Zhong and Huang Meiling approached one of the victims and led her to Huang Qinyan, who claimed to be a Chinese physician.
The victim was told she was experiencing misfortune due to 'negative spiritual elements', the police said on June 6.
To ward off misfortune, the woman was said to have handed $700 in cash and a gold necklace to Huang Qinyan, who placed the items in a plastic bag.
Huang Qinyan performed a 'cleansing ritual' on the valuables, and the victim was told to keep the plastic bag, untouched, under her bed for a month.
The woman checked the bag the next day and found that her valuables had been replaced with leaves.
On June 4, the police received a report of another scam with a similar modus operandi.
According to the police, the second victim was approached by two of the accused and convinced to place an envelope with cash into a black rubbish bag for safekeeping.
She later discovered that her money had gone missing.
Police investigations found that Huang Ximing was working together with the three women to cheat the victims.
All four were arrested on June 5.

82 people nabbed after anti-drug bust, more than S$132,000 worth of drugs seized in Singapore
SINGAPORE: Some 82 people were arrested after drugs worth over S$132,000 were seized in a five-day, island-wide operation. In a statement on Saturday (June 21), the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said that the anti-drug blitz took place from June 16 to 20, and covered areas like Ang Mo Kio, Bukit Merah, Changi, Punggol and Woodlands. A total of about 1,307g of cannabis, 739g of heroin, 196g of 'Ice' (methamphetamine), 52 cannabis seeds, two Ecstasy tablets, 2g of cannabis resin and 1g of cannabis-infused tablet were seized. The seized drugs were estimated to be able to feed the addiction of 640 abusers for a week, they added. Police officers were alerted to a call for assistance on June 14 at a residential unit in Punggol Central. They arrested a 35-year-old Singaporean man after searching the unit and finding substances believed to be controlled drugs and drug paraphernalia. CNB officers were alerted and took over the investigation of the drug offences. In another incident on June 16, CNB officers launched a drug bust in Yishun Avenue 6 after some follow-up investigations. A 34-year-old Singaporean man was arrested after a search of a residential unit saw a total of about 29g of cannabis and drug paraphernalia. Another follow-up operation later in the evening saw the arrest of two male foreign nationals at Moonstone Lane in Bendemeer - a 31-year-old for suspected drug trafficking offences and a 37-year-old for alleged drug consumption. A search of the 31-year-old's e-bike and his hideout in Bendemeer found a total of about 1,095g of cannabis, 19g of 'Ice', drug paraphernalia and cash amounting to $3,944. On June 18, officers arrested a 59-year-old Singaporean man for alleged drug trafficking in Bukit Merah, which was soon followed by an arrest of another 69-year old Singaporean man in the same vicinity for drug-related offences. A total of about 209g of heroin and 17g 'Ice' were seized from the former's place. Another 62-year-old Singaporean man was nabbed in Yishun Avenue 4 for suspected drug trafficking. CNB officers had to force their way into his residential unit after the man refused to open the door. A search of the unit recovered about 247g of heroin and small amount of 'Ice'. Investigations into all arrested suspects are ongoing. Anyone found guilty of trafficking more than 15g of diamorphine, or 'pure heroin', or 250g of methamphetamine or more than 500g of cannabis may face the mandatory death penalty. According to CNB's annual statistics report on Feb 12, in 2024, there were 126 new drug abusers under the age of 20 arrested, with the youngest aged 13. This was 30 per cent more than the 97 nabbed in 2023. New abusers totalled 966 in 2024, an increase from the 952 arrested in 2023. MP, senator help accident victim

Jelutong MP RSN Rayer and Senator Datuk Seri Dr RA Lingeshwaran were travelling in Jelutong when they saw the accident. They stopped and called for an ambulance, with Dr Lingeshwaran providing first aid to the victim. The senator is a medical doctor and was a director of Hospital Sungai Bakap prior to his appointment to the Dewan Negara. Muthupandian, 38, and Muthukumari, 28, from Tamil Nadu, got married 10 years ago and have two children. Chinese student gets life in UK jail for 'campaign of rape'
LONDON: A Chinese post-graduate student convicted of drugging and raping 10 women in the UK and China — and suspected of having attacked more — was on Thursday jailed for life by a London court. Police in London say they have evidence to suggest he may have targeted more than 50 other women. Serial rapist Zhenhao Zou, 28 — described in court as "calculated and predatory" — targeted young Chinese women whom he invited to his London flat for drinks or to study, before drugging and attacking them. Zou filmed nine of the rapes with hidden or handheld cameras, but only three of the 10 victims have ever been identified. Sentencing him at Inner London Crown Court, Judge Rosina Cottage said there was "no doubt that you planned and executed a campaign of rape" that had caused "devastating and long-term effects." To the world, he appeared "well-to-do, ambitious and charming," but this was a mask hiding a "sexual predator," she said. He treated his victims "callously" as "sex toys" for his own gratification, and his desire to assert "power and control over women" meant that he would be a "risk for an indefinite period," she added. Zou, wearing a dark suit and glasses, listened impassively in the dock to the sentence via a translator. He will serve a minimum of 22 years in jail, after accounting for time already spent in custody. The former engineering student at University College London was found guilty by a jury in March of 28 offences, including 11 counts of rape — with two of the counts relating to one woman — three counts of voyeurism, and one of false imprisonment. He was found guilty of raping three women in London and seven in China between 2019 and 2023. He was also convicted of three counts of possessing butanediol — an industrial solvent — with intent to commit a sexual offence, and 10 counts of possession of an extreme pornographic image. Victims told the sentencing hearing in impact statements of the psychological damage they suffered, including nightmares, self-harm, and a sense of despair and isolation. One recalled "wandering like a trapped animal trying to find an exit" after she was attacked. "What happened that night is etched into my soul forever," she said, adding that Zou's family was "very powerful in China" and she feared he would "seek revenge." After the sentence, Saira Pike of the Crown Prosecution Service described Zou as a "serial rapist and a danger to women." "His life sentence reflects the heinous acts and harm he caused to women and the danger he posed to society." Analysis of footage and web chats showed the former student's "meticulous planning and the horrifying execution of his crimes." Pike paid tribute to the "courageous women" who came forward to report his "horrific crimes," and whose evidence — combined with his own videos — helped secure his conviction and life sentence. Since he was convicted, and following an international appeal by UK police, some 24 women have come forward to say they might have been sexually assaulted by Zou. London's Met Police have said they have evidence to suggest he may have targeted more than 50 other women, and urged possible victims to come forward, adding that he had also studied in Belfast in Northern Ireland in 2017. "Our investigation remains open, and we continue to appeal to anyone who may think they have been a victim of Zou," said Commander Kevin Southworth of the Metropolitan Police. "Please come forward and speak with our team — we will treat you with empathy, kindness and respect."
