Langkawi eyes sailing industry to boost tourism, economy
LANGKAWI: The sailing industry can become a catalyst in further enhancing Langkawi's potential to be a world-renowned tourism destination as well as a sailing hub in the region.
Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) chief executive officer Datuk Haslilna Abdul Hamid said the economic spillover from the industry, which includes shipping activities, maintenance, repair and overhaul as well as boat manufacturing, is capable of generating job opportunities and driving local and national economic development.
'Langkawi is an island, so as an island, it definitely has a marina. So, with this facility, the sailing industry will have a positive impact on the local economy.
'If the sailing sector can flourish, a lot of economic spillovers can be enjoyed by the local community,' she told reporters here today.
Earlier, she delivered the keynote address at the Malaysia Yachting Conference held in conjunction with the 2025 Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA'25) here today.
Haslina said Langkawi currently has three marinas, namely Langkawi Yacht Club, Telaga Harbour Marina and Rebak Marina Langkawi, which are quite limited and can only accommodate yachts of a certain size.
'We receive many requests from super yachts that want to enter the facility, but we can't because only yachts measuring 80 metres in length are allowed to dock.
'So, there is a need to expand the marina if we want to further stimulate the economy from the yacht industry... we need to see what needs to be done at the existing marinas, if we want to add a new marina it may be a little complicated,' she said.
Meanwhile, she hopes that the Malaysia International Boat Show 2025 (MYBOS'25) and the Malaysia Sailing Conference could become annual events that could further enhance Langkawi's identity as a regional sailing hub.

Felda committed to strengthening plantation sector transformation
Bernama KOTA TINGGI: The Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) is continuing to take proactive steps to strengthen the nation's plantation sector transformation agenda. Its chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the effort includes the implementation of the 25:23 Project. This initiative aims to increase the yield to 25 tonnes per hectare per year and achieve an oil extraction rate (OER) of 23 per cent by 2027. He said this initiative also promotes quality, discipline, and collaboration between Felda and FGV Holdings Berhad, a major seed producer, to achieve this goal. "FGV is a reliable seed producer and constantly enhances the quality of its seeds to achieve better yields. Felda's plantation management and the efficient operations of FGV's mills are equally important to ensure high oil extraction rates," he told reporters at the 2024 Best 25:23 Project awards ceremony at Dewan Semai Bakti Felda Lok Heng here today. Present were FGV Holdings Berhad chairman Tan Sri Rastam Mohd Isa and Felda Johor Bahru Regional director Mohd Helmi Fakhzan Abd Wahab. Ahmad Shabery said the event was held to recognise outstanding Felda personnel and plantation managers who have improved the productivity and quality of fresh fruit bunches. Awards were presented to individuals and top-performing plantation complexes involved in the 25:23 Project. The initiative will be expanded to 15 additional complexes. "This reflects Felda's continued commitment to improving operational efficiency and plantation yields. As a major contributor to the global oils and fats industry, Felda and its subsidiaries are crucial in promoting sustainability, competitiveness, and the empowerment of the bumiputera economy," he said. He also said that Felda is expanding the PMS 'Damar Berkat' operational model to reduce losses in settlers' produce, improve transaction transparency, and ensure higher income for them. "The PMS model, successfully implemented by the Koperasi Permodalan Felda (KPF) since April, is set to be expanded following a pilot project in Bukit Damar, Lanchang, Pahang. We will soon introduce it to 11 additional locations and ultimately to over 40 areas. I hope this will be a game changer in managing palm fruits before they are sent to the mills," he said. He added that six new PMS locations have been identified: Ijok and Nenering in Perak; Layang-Layang, Chemplak, Chemplak Barat, and Sri Ledang in Johor; and Kampung New Zealand in Pahang. "This implementation will be guided by a comprehensive system that includes procurement, quality control of fresh fruit bunches, logistics for delivery to mills, and more competitive pricing," he said.

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his heartfelt appreciation to all parties involved in the successful organisation of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA'25) and the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits last month. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who is also MADANI Government spokesperson, said Anwar conveyed the appreciation message during today's Cabinet meeting, describing both events as historic milestones for Malaysia. 'The Prime Minister deeply values the efforts of all personnel and teams involved in organising LIMA'25 in Langkawi, as well as the ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur, at the end of May. 'Most heads of state and government leaders expressed their satisfaction with the warm hospitality and thorough preparations by Malaysia as the host,' Fahmi said at his weekly press conference. Fahmi said that the Prime Minister is currently considering appropriate forms of recognition to honour the dedication and commitment shown by all parties involved, with a formal announcement to be made in due course. 'Insya-Allah, several options are being considered, and we leave it to the Prime Minister to make the official announcement,' he said. LIMA'25 in Langkawi gathered 860 exhibitors from 24 countries, comprising 426 international and 434 local companies. Themed 'Today's Innovation, Tomorrow's Achievements', this year's edition was the largest maritime and aerospace exhibition in Southeast Asia since LIMA's inception in 1991. In Kuala Lumpur, apart from the 46th ASEAN Summit, two high-level meetings were also successfully held last month, namely the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the first ASEAN-GCC-China Summit. The inaugural trilateral summit between ASEAN, GCC and China, which was also attended by Chinese Premier Li Qiang, not only marked a new chapter of strategic ties but also showcased Malaysia's commitment to enhancing regional economic cooperation. The GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Fahmi noted that the successful organisation of LIMA'25 and the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits forms a strong foundation for Malaysia's hosting of the 47th ASEAN Summit in October under its 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'.
