GOL, TAP Adopt IATA FuelIS to deliver fuel savings

Trade Arabia03-06-2025

GOL and TAP Air Portugal have become the first airlines to use IATA FuelIS — an advanced analytics solution designed to help airlines optimise fuel consumption.
International Air Transport Association's (IATA) net-zero carbon emissions roadmap highlights that technology and operational efficiency improvements — which directly lower fuel consumption — are expected to contribute to about 10% of the emissions reduction in 2050.
"Fuel management is key for airlines. Depending on the prevailing price of jet fuel, it generally accounts for 25-30% of the cost base. On top of that, as airlines decarbonise, tracking and managing carbon costs—which are directly related to fuel consumption—will be a growing priority. Understanding how an airline is performing compared with industry peers using FuelIS can pinpoint potential efficiencies that reduce costs and improve environmental performance. The great support from 220 airlines contributing operational data on fuel consumption combined with continuously improving analytical capabilities makes FuelIS a very compelling tool,' said Nick Careen, IATA Senior Vice President Operations, Safety and Security.
Data Accuracy and Reliability
IATA FuelIS helps airlines benchmark the fuel efficiency of their aircraft or engines against industry averages, gaining valuable insights into specific markets, regions, countries, and fleet types based on real operational data. IATA FuelIS uses data from the IATA Global Aviation Data Management (GADM) platform. This data is sourced from the Flight Data eXchange (FDX) program which now comprises fuel data from more than 220 airlines worldwide, covering more than 8 million flights a year.
FuelIS integrates seamlessly with IATA's Fuel Efficiency Gap Analysis (FEGA), with the data from FuelIS supporting the development and tracking of fuel strategies. Since 2005, IATA has partnered with airlines worldwide, helping the industry identify potential annual reductions of 4.76 million tonnes in fuel consumption, equating to $3.8 billion in savings annually.
'Fuel is a major cost driver for TAP Air Portugal. Managing consumption is an important priority for its cost implications and its contribution to decarbonization. Every kilogram of fuel saved counts. The insights FuelIS provides help us measure the impact of our fleet modernization and our long-term transition to SAF. It also supports a fuel strategy that is more responsive to market and operational changes,' said TAP Air Portugal CEO Luís Rodrigues.

Spain's Historic Blackout Blamed On Poor Voltage Control

Spain's massive blackout was caused by overvoltage on the transmission system and the failure of the country's generators to compensate by absorbing more reactive power, according to the official government investigation. Investigators found no evidence a cyber-attack contributed to the nationwide blackout and did not directly blame the high share of renewable generation for causing a cascading failure across the network. But investigators did note there was not enough synchronised generation connected to the network to maintain voltage within acceptable limits and those generators failed to behave as expected. Efforts to connect an extra thermal generator came too late to prevent worsening instability and repeated overvoltage from causing the system to collapse. Investigators recommended stricter enforcement of existing voltage control obligations for synchronised generators as well as the deployment of synchronised compensators across the network to improve stability. The report also concluded that non-synchronous generators (including wind and solar generators) should be incentivised to contribute to voltage control in future. The instability seems to have originated within Spain itself rather than being imported from the Europe-wide transmission network that stretches from Iberia all the way to Ukraine and Turkey. Nonetheless, investigators noted Spain's relative isolation from the continent-spanning transmission system may have made the instability worse. Spain's interconnections via France account for only 3% of capacity on the country's network, well below the 15% recommended by EU regulations. More interconnections with the rest of the European grid would probably not have averted the blackout but they have been a long-sought objective, one that investigators repeated. ABB wins electrical, automation contract for Petrobras FPSO vessels

ABB has announced that it has been awarded a large order by Seatrium, a global provider of marine engineering solutions based in Singapore, for the supply of electrical equipment and automation solutions on a new generation of floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels for operator Petrobras. The two vessels – P-84 and P-85 – will be deployed in the Atapu and Sépia fields, approximately 200 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. As per the deal, ABB will design and construct the topside and hullside electrical equipment, electrical substation automation and eHouses for both FPSOs. Petrobras will utilize the ABB's Ability System 800xA and IEC 61850 technologies for substation automation, which allow for seamless interoperability between Intelligent Electrical Devices and enhances operational efficiency and system reliability, said the company in a statement. In a first for Petrobras, the P-84 and P-85 vessels will also feature an all-electric concept, which focuses on efficient power generation and increased energy efficiency, by using electrically driven compressors and motors to produce 165 MW power generation capacity, it stated. The project also marks the first offshore application of ABB's three Is-limiter configuration which, due to the FPSOs' high-power capacity, is vital to ensuring short circuits are managed effectively. Is-limiters are fast-acting devices that prevent damage to electrical components and reduce mechanical and thermal stress by limiting the short-circuit current before it reaches its peak value. Constructed by ABB Singapore, the FPSO topside systems will be installed in an ABB eHouse - a prefabricated transportable substation designed to house medium voltage and low voltage switchgear, critical power equipment and automation cabinets. ABB's Sorocaba factory – located 85km west of São Paulo in Brazil – will manufacture the UniGear ZS1 switchboard, which is used to distribute electric power safely and reliably in demanding applications. "The offshore energy industry requires innovative solutions and technologies, at scale and at pace, to support an effective and secure energy market," said Per Erik Holsten, President of ABB's Energy Industries division. "With our ability to meet advanced technical requirements and high safety standards, along with our deep commitment to energy efficiency, we look forward to working with Seatrium on this large scale and complex project," he added. The Brazilian FPSO market continues to be a growth sector for offshore energy, with potential investment estimated at $21 billion in 2026-2027, set against a global FPSO market projected to reach a value of $46.2 billion by 2033. Construction of the P-84 and P-85 FPSOs has been ongoing since 2024, with delivery of ABB's eHouses expected by 2027.
