Ranked UFC veteran ready to welcome Donald Cerrone back to octagon
Stephen Thompson likes the idea of a potential fight with Donald Cerrone.
Cerrone (36-17 MMA, 23-14 UFC) recently announced that he has re-entered the UFC's drug-testing pool and plans to come back from retirement for two more fights. A longtime UFC veteran himself, Thompson (17-8-1 MMA, 12-8-1 UFC) thinks a fight with Cerrone makes sense.
'I'm thinking April, May time, I think would be cool just because I'm a huge fan of Cerrone, and he comes from that old school era that I kind of came from almost 13, 14 years ago,' Thompson said on the 'OverDogs Podcast'. 'So, it's cool that he wants to jump back out there.
'I thought it would be awesome if he doesn't want to cut the weight to 155 maybe to make that fight at 170. I thought it would be really cool to have two veterans like that step back out there and face off against each other, but nothing booked yet. But that's what I'm kind of shooting for, that April, May time.'
'Still on the grind'
'Wonderboy' has been fighting a slew of top contenders in the past decade but now finds himself having lost four of his past five and back-to-back stoppage losses to Shavkat Rakhmonov and Joaquin Buckley.
That being said, the former two-time UFC welterweight title challenger still feels like he can compete at a high level.
'I didn't win my last fight or even the one after that, but we're still on the grind. We're not giving up,' Thompson said. 'I think I got it. I feel just as fast as I did 10 years ago, feel just as good, just like riding a bike, but I do spend more time on making sure that the body is feeling right.
'With massage therapy, with the recovery, the ice bath, maybe taking that day off where I'm not grinding that hard. Maybe I'm working just technique and just flowing, giving the body ample time to heal up, and I think that's crucial.'

He beat Stipe Miocic to defend the title in November 2024. But now he leaned into the narrative that he was ducking the Aspinall fight, and even said he was keen on White bringing Francis Ngannou back to the UFC to fight him. Aspinall recently declared himself the rightful titleholder since Jones continued to delay a matchup. There was growing discontent in the MMA community over Jones' apparent unwillingness to line up a fight with Aspinall, to the point there was a petition urging the UFC to strip him of his title. Now the promotion's brass doesn't have to make that decision because Jones made it for them. White has said Jones is the pound-for-pound greatest fighter in MMA history. Aspinall took that fight on short notice when the original main event for that card, Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic for Jones's heavyweight title was scrapped following an injury to Jones. Despite Aspinall winning the interim crown, UFC CEO Dana White remained steadfast in saying that Jones vs. Miocic was the fight to make. That fight did not take place until November 2024. Jones held on to his belt that night, beating Miocic by TKO in the third round. By that time, Aspinall had already defended his interim crown, scoring a first-round knockout win over Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 in July 2024. Aspinall, who has not fought since he defeated Blaydes, had been waiting for the title unification bout with Jones since Jones's win over Miocic in November. In late April, Aspinall became the longest-serving UFC interim champion, topping the 535-day reign of Renan Barao, who defended his interim title twice before being named undisputed champion. UFC CEO Dana White announced Saturday that Jones has elected to retire rather than fight Aspinall in blockbuster bout to unify the UFC heavyweight titles. As a result, Jones vacates his UFC heavyweight belt and Aspinall, the interim champion for the past 19 months, has been promoted to undisputed champion status. Advertisement The news marks a bittersweet end to Jones' bizarre heavyweight reign, which began in March 2023 with a first-round submission of Ciryl Gane and ultimately contained only one title defense — a November 2024 showdown against Stipe Miocic, who was 42 years old at the time and hadn't won a fight since 2020. After spending the majority of the past two years trying to convince Jones to face him, Aspinall now takes up the mantle as UFC heavyweight king having already almost cleared out the rest of the division's top ranks. The Englishman is 8-1 under the UFC banner, with his lone loss coming in a setback to Curtis Blaydes that saw Aspinall tear his ACL just 15 seconds into the match; Aspinall swiftly avenged that outcome upon his return with a 60-second destruction of Blaydes this past July to defend his interim belt.
