Times of Oman7 hours ago

Muscat: British institution Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) unveiled on Monday in Muscat the contents of its new global report, Advanced Capabilities of Higher Education in the Sultanate of Oman, highlighting Oman's growing role as an international hub for higher education.
The launch was held under the patronage of Dr. Khamis Saif Al Jabri, Chairman of the Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit.
The report underscored the significant growth in Oman's research output, which increased by 36.9% in 2024 compared to 2023.
Dr. Maryam Bil'arab Al Nabhani, Director General of Private Universities and Colleges, stated that Oman Vision 2040 has placed education, learning, research, and national competencies at the heart of national priorities, forming the foundation for building a competitive and sustainable knowledge-based economy.
She added that the Vision has set an ambitious goal of having four Omani universities ranked among the top 500 globally in the QS rankings by 2040.
Notably, Oman achieved positive results in the 2026 QS World University Rankings, with five Omani universities included, compared to only two in the 2025 rankings—reflecting the sector's rapid progress.
Dr. Al Nabhani explained that three private universities made their debut in the global rankings, namely Nizwa University (ranked 770-761), Dhofar University (ranked 900-851) and the German University of Technology in Oman 'GUtech' (ranked 1200-1001).
Additionally, Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) made remarkable progress, climbing to 334th place globally, up from 362nd in 2025. Meanwhile, Sohar University achieved a qualitative leap, advancing to the 1000-951 bracket after being ranked 1200-1001 the previous year.
She attributed these positive outcomes to a strategic national approach, starting with enhancing education quality, supporting research, improving innovation ecosystems, and establishing institutional infrastructure that meets international evaluation standards—including QS criteria such as academic reputation, research quality, employability, international collaboration, and the ratio of international students.
The QS report serves as a strategic reference document, promoting Oman's higher education institutions globally, supporting efforts to develop higher education, and reinforcing Oman's position as a leading regional and global hub for education and research in line with Oman Vision 2040.
For his part, Dr. Moosa Abdullah Al Kindi, Dean of the Modern College of Business and Science, stated that the release of the QS Higher Education Report on Oman marks a pivotal milestone in documenting and advancing higher education. He noted that the college's participation in this initiative aligns with its mission to actively contribute to national development through academic excellence, research and innovation.
He added that Oman's continued progress toward achieving Oman Vision 2040's goals makes such partnerships a vital tool for enhancing the global presence of its higher education sector.
This event reflects the nation's commitment to improving education quality and achieving institutional excellence at regional and international levels.

Phase 3 of single-use plastic bags ban in Oman from July 1

Muscat – Environment Authority (EA) has announced that the third phase of a national initiative to ban single-use plastic shopping bags will come into effect on July 1, 2025. This stage broadens the scope of the ban to include additional segments of the retail and food sectors. Shops selling fruits and vegetables, packaging units, grocery stores, sweet shops, candy factories, bakeries, gift shops and outlets selling bread, pastries and confectionery will be required to stop providing single-use plastic bags and switch to sustainable alternatives such as reusable cloth or paper bags. The authority has called on businesses and consumers to cooperate actively to reduce plastic waste and protect the environment for future generations. The measure aligns with Oman Vision 2040 goals to curb pollution and promote sustainable consumption. In January 2024, Decision No 8/2024 set out a phased approach to ban all single-use plastic shopping bags by 2027. The phased rollout is designed to help businesses and consumers adapt gradually, EA stated. The first phase, which began on July 1, 2024, targeted pharmacies, hospitals and clinics. The second phase, effective from January 1, 2025, covers textiles and fabric stores, clothing outlets, tailors, eyewear shops, mobile pho-ne vendors and repair services, watch shops, furniture retailers and household goods suppliers. Businesses found violating the ban face fines between RO50 and RO1,000. Repeat offences within a month will result in doubled penalties.

MCSY approves 61 youth initiatives in Oman for 2025

Muscat – Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MCSY) has launched the 2025 edition of its Youth Initiatives Support Programme, approving 61 projects across the sultanate. The initiatives span the fields of culture, health, sports, economy, media, religion, environment and entrepreneurship with the aim of benefiting diverse segments of society. Hilal bin Saif al Siyabi, Director General of Youth Affairs at MCSY, said the programme reflects an ongoing commitment to backing youth-led projects that address community needs and align with Oman Vision 2040. Priority areas include innovation, sustainability and social development. 'Youth initiatives are voluntary, non-profit projects designed and carried out by Omani youth to tackle development and social issues,' Siyabi said. He added that the programme encourages leadership, active citizenship and respect for national cultural values. According to the ministry, the programme creates a collaborative framework connecting youth with government institutions, allowing young people to propose practical solutions while gaining skills in project management and planning. Support includes training, consultations and capacity-building sessions, as well as logistical help with venues, transport and official processes. Financial backing is available for projects that meet quality standards and align with ministry priorities. Applications for 2025 were submitted via the ministry's website and screened under strict criteria, including leaders being Omani youth, and projects being non-profit and having clear and measurable goals. MCSY has also launched advanced training for programme leaders, focusing on modern tools, capacity building and alignment with national development plans. The next phase will emphasise high-quality content and a decentralised support model tailored to each governorate. Since its inception in 2016, the programme has supported over 600 initiatives, benefiting more than 150,000 young men and women. It has also helped organise national exhibitions and events, raising awareness and recognition of youth-led efforts. To strengthen oversight, the ministry has developed a comprehensive guide and an electronic system to evaluate and enhance initiatives in partnership with public and private sector stakeholders.
