Mum's ‘tight-arse' kid's birthday present divides the internet

News.com.aua day ago

A mum has angered thousands after revealing her unique approach to children's birthday party gifts, or rather, a lack thereof.
In a viral video, which features the Perth woman sitting in the back seat of a car, she proudly shows off her 'present' for a children's birthday party: a bag filled with rags, cleaning supplies, tea towels, dishwashing detergent, and Glad Wrap.
'We're going to a family birthday party and the last thing I wanna do to the parents of the child is to give them some present for the kid that's going to end up in landfill, and a whole bunch of clutter that needs tidying and cleaning, so this is my secret present that I like to do at kids birthday parties,' she begins.
'I like to bring a bag of rags,' she says proudly, whipping it out to show her followers. 'So you know when you're at a kid's birthday party and everyone wants to help but nobody knows how to help because they don't know where any of the cleaning stuff is.
'I bring cleaning rags to wipe up sticky messes at the party. I bring Glad Wrap … so you can wrap up extra food and put it in the fridge.
'I like to bring dishwashing detergent because you can bet that the parents may have run out … I bring a lot of tea towels because these are really handy and nobody knows where to find the tea towels in somebody else's house.'
She then finished her video by asking her followers, 'Does anyone else do like that?'
The video quickly went viral, and it was immediately clear that nobody else does that.
Many even called the gift 'offensive' and 'weird'.
'Wake up to yourself,' said one viewer.
'That's actually embarrassing,' wrote someone else.
'I run a pretty tight ship and if someone brought this to my house at my daughter's birthday … I would take offence to it. As if they thought my house was gross,' added one mum.
A different commenter sarcastically wrote: 'Wow those kids are going to be thrilled', while another commenter remarked: 'Wow what a tight-arse'.
'That's actually really sad, it's the kids birthday you should spoil the kid; if you want to know where a tea towel is, ask the host, it's not that hard!' quipped yet another critic.
However, not all reactions were negative, with some defending the gesture.
'Wow what a lot of hateful comments. It goes to show people choose money and gifts instead of help, time and love. This is why we live in a world full of hate and war now. People are so judgmental of others. It's sad really,' wrote one supporter.
Another added, 'You don't need to take a present to a birthday, just being there can be enough. Maybe this family don't do presents, did you ever think of that?'
A third wrote, 'As someone who lives in a seemingly constant state of overwhelm I would love this gift. Acts of service is my love language.'
Etiquette expert weighs in
To help settle the debate, we spoke to a world-leading etiquette expert, Jo Hayes, founder of EtiqetteExpert. Org, who, at face value, thought the woman's idea didn't sound quite right.
However, after watching the video and hearing the woman's rationale, she ended up thinking, 'all power to her'.
'I can confidently predict most Aussie mums would relish having this woman at their child's birthday party. She sounds like a 'make it happen' woman,' she tells news.com.au.
However, she notes that context is key here.
'If she had a child with her, who was the actual/main invited guest to this party, it would be poor etiquette to show up with a 'bag of rags' and no fun gift for the child,' she explains.
'However, it appears this woman is a bit more mature, is perhaps an older aunty, or even a grandmother.'
'What she's saying is true: families are usually swamped with loads of plastic toys on a child's birthday … and while the birthday boy/girl certainly deserves a few fun gifts, bringing something different, but helpful, is actually a very thoughtful gesture,' she says.
Ms Hayes points out that the actual gift here isn't the physical bag of rags but the elbow grease she would provide.
'She isn't simply showing up with the cleaning items,' she explains. 'She'll be the one buzzing around wiping up spills, cleaning dishes and covering leftover food with glad wrap. I'll invite you to my next party!'
In saying that, she believes that a nice card for the child would be a 'thoughtful gesture' in addition to the cleaning.

What's on: Supercars, MAGNT, Darwin Symphony Orchestra and more from June 21-22

WHAT'S ON THIS WEEKEND Buckle up, it's Supercars weekend! Tickets to the Darwin Triple Crown are still on sale, if you feel like a last-minute rev up. It's also a big weekend of Aboriginal arts, kicking off with the opening of the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards NATSIAA's this weekend at MAGNT! Always a favourite exhibition, 71 finalist works have been announced for this year's awards. But if your weekend is packed, do not despair – all of them will be exhibited at MAGNT until 26 January 2026! Between 10am and midday there are plenty of exhibitions to choose from while you grab your Mad About Coffee and Parap Markets laksa: check out the opening of Cassaria Hogan Young and Carol Young at Laundry Gallery in Parap at 10am, then head over to Warlukurlangu Artists – Rising Stars at Outstation Gallery, before checking out the artists talk with Gary Lee and friends for the Queer Territory exhibition at NCCA at 11am. If you're looking for some live music, Dan Sultan is performing with the Darwin Symphony Orchestra at the Darwin Entertainment Centre as part of Garrmalang Festival at 7.30pm tonight – tickets still on sale! On Sunday, head to the Green Ant Craft Fair at the Ski Club from 9am for handmade crafts, local food stalls and kids' entertainment. Then wind down with the Bloody Mary Book Club from 2.45pm at The Last Supper – bring along whatever you're reading or a favourite to share. SOMEWHERE YOU NEED TO EAT One of my favourite things about the Territory is that it usually is what it says it is on the box – unless, of course, you're going to Crab Claw Island – which you can drive to! To be fair, it is a tidal island, so do always check the tides – but there are worse places to be stuck for a few hours. I'd forgive you for thinking Crab Claw is one for the fishos, as it is in a prime spot for a flick. But it is only an hour and a half from Darwin city, so if you're looking for somewhere for a day trip, drive out there for lunch on their deck overlooking the ocean. You must try the tiger prawn salad … It's got mango, avocado, macadamia nuts and prawns, in a bowl made of toasted flatbread. If that doesn't scream tropical island lunch, I don't know what does. LOCAL'S TIP An early local's tip today: getting up with the sun is worth it. These cool mornings make you feel a little more alive, and so does paddling out onto the ocean at sunrise on a stand-up paddleboard. Did you know the Fun Supply team hire out paddle boards from Windsurfers Corner on Tuesday and Saturday mornings? The perfect weekend morning: Paddle over to De La Plage for a coffee, or just hang out on the ocean for a couple of hours between 6.30 and about 8.30am, and then get a Gracie's Toastie and eat it at the newly painted Windsurfers Corner benches. Bliss.

Lizzo reveals secret to her slimdown — and finally sets the record straight on Ozempic use

Don't miss out on the headlines from Celebrity Life. Followed categories will be added to My News. It's about damn time. Lizzo has spoken about her weight loss journey - and clarified her Ozempic use - months after clapping back at rumours about the drug. 'I've tried everything,' the singer, 37, said on Trisha Paytas' Just Trish podcast on Thursday, per Page Six. The Grammy winner explained however that she abandoned the semaglutide, which has not been approved for use for weight loss in Australia, early into her journey. 'Ozempic works because you eat less food, yeah? So if you eat right, it makes you feel full,' she said. 'But if you can just do that on your own and get mind over matter, it's the same thing.' Ozempic is also associated with a number of side-effects including most commonly gastrointestinal disorders like nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting, in a way that doctor-approved changes to diet and exercise are not. Lizzo opened up about her recent body transformation. Picture: Instagram She spoke candidly about losing weight. Picture: Instagram Lizzo revealed that she saw the best results when she ditched her vegan diet. 'When I was vegan, I was consuming a lot of fake meats, I was eating a lot of bread, I was eating a lot of rice and I had to eat a lot of it to stay full,' she recalled. 'When I started actually eating whole foods and eating, like, beef and chicken and fish, I was actually full and not expanding my stomach by putting a lot of fake things in there that [weren't] actually filling me up,' the songwriter continued. She said she tried 'everything' throughout her weight loss journey. Picture: Instagram Performing at the Brit Awards in 2020. Picture:She went on to defend those who use weightloss drugs. 'It's not easy,' Lizzo insisted. 'It's a drug to help somebody with something they're struggling with.' She added that 'telling someone they're cheating' is a 'way of being fatphobic.' According to the TGA in Australia, 'Ozempic has been included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. This means that the medicine has been evaluated by the TGA for its safety, quality and efficacy for that indication only.' Lizzo made headlines in September 2024 for hitting back at an Instagram hater questioning whether she was taking the type II diabetes drug. 'Whyyyy [sic] do u follow me?' she asked at the time. The following year, Lizzo explained that she had, instead, applied 'a calorie deficit' and cut 'sugary stuff' from her diet. 'Everybody's body is different,' she reminded her social media followers in April. 'Find out what works for you.' This article originally appeared in Page Six and was reproduced with permission.
