Queensland specialist Philipsburg hunting Sunshine State hat-trick in Ipswich Cup

Hawkesbury trainer James Ponsonby will shoot for three straight wins in the Sunshine State on Saturday when his Queensland specialist Philipsburg lines up in the $250,000 Ipswich Cup (2150m). Ponsonby had initially aimed Philipsburg at last weekend's Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) on Stradbroke day at Eagle Farm but changed tack after the seven-year-old gelding had an injury scare. 'He got banged up in the paddock and we thought we'd pull the plug because he had a little bit of inflammation,' Ponsonby said. 'It turned out to be nothing, which was good. He would've struggled to beat Campaldino (in the Brisbane Cup), the way it went. 'This (the Listed Ipswich Cup) looked like a fair race on paper in terms of weight conditions. 'He's well, although he hasn't had a lot of luck since he's been home in Sydney so I thought when in Rome, do as the Romans do – back up and try to get another one.' Regular rider Winona Costin has delivered with Philipsburg on two hit-and-run missions to Queensland this year, in a Benchmark 80 (2200m) at Doomben and then a Benchmark 90 (2212m) at Eagle Farm in the space of seven days in April. But in his last three races Philipsburg has struggled, finishing no better than fifth in three Benchmark 78 races at his home track Hawkesbury, Gosford and Randwick. Asked why Philipsburg loved the Sunshine State so much, Ponsonby said: 'It's the genuine tempo. 'In all fairness to him, he's no world beater but he tries very hard and when the weights suit him in terms of benchmarking, he's been able to run in races where he probably deserves more weight but because he's got average Sydney form, then he gets the weight relief. 'In Queensland he goes to sleep in those races where they run along and the genuine tempo helps offset the weight relief sometimes. 'He's just a genuine horse. The day he draws a right number, he'll more than likely get the job done. 'There's more than one reason why Australians want to flock to Queensland to live so you can't blame a Kiwi horse, can you?' Philipsburg ($34) is at long odds to win the Ipswich Cup, with bookmakers favouring Miss Joelene ($5.50), Diablo Bolt ($6), Osmose ($6.50) and Poetic Drama ($7). However, Ponsonby is quietly confident that with Costin in the saddle and carrying a lightweight 53kg, Philipsburg can cause an upset. 'It's a good, solid line-up. We're just going to need a bit of luck in running but if the tempo of the race is genuine then it gives him somewhat of a chance,' Ponsonby said. 'It's a good cup race, no doubt. He ran at Doomben so well, and Ipswich is similar in that it's an on-pace preferential racetrack, so I can't knock him. 'Going back and looking over the Ipswich Cup winners, they're invariably not always the best horse in the race but they're the horse that has the best luck in the race. 'He gets down in the weights to 53kg and Winona is going up to ride him so I can't ask for any more than that.' Caloundra Cup (2400m) on July 5.

Shayne O'Cass's best bets and inside mail for Hawkesbury and Nowra on Tuesday June 17, 2025

Racenet form analyst Shayne O'Cass presents his best bets and inside mail for Tuesday's NSW meeting at Hawkesbury, plus tips for Nowra. â– â– â– â– â– HAWKESBURY TIPS BEST BET Race 6 No.1 CHARLEROI: Highest rated horse in this race off an impressive last start win. NEXT BEST Race 2 No.3 ALL SAINTS: Beaten a nose on debut; spelled, trialled like a bomb recently. VALUE Race 7 No.6 LIKE LUKEY: Ideally suited out to 1800m, third-up, at a favoured venue. QUADDIE Race 5: 2,8,10,11 Race 6: 1 Race 7: 6,8 Race 8: 2,4 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW Rachel King will be popular with punters to win the TAB Jockeys Challenge. HORSESHOE HILL (7) is a 2YO taking on the older horses but only five of them at most. This daughter of dual G2 winner Miss Rose de Lago was tipped out after finishing third to stablemate O' Ole and Memo in the Wyong 2YO Magic Millions on December 11. Smashing trial win on June 6. VANLEE (6) took a lot of ground off Manaajem late when runner-up at Wyong on New Year's Eve. Trialling well herself. LAND SPEED (2) has come back in fine order. BET: HORSESHOE HILL (7) to win. ALL SAINTS (3) was off the map on debut ($2.10 into $1.55) in a Kembla 1000m Maiden on February 8. Beaten a nose with no excuse. They did run 56.66s so not a bad effort in defeat. Spelled, trialled like a bomb (as usual) the other day. CELERITY (5), an $850,000 Easter Yearling, brings strong city form, black-type form in fact, to the provincials today. EL QASABI (1) has claims on a debut second, albeit a distant one. BET: ALL SAINTS (3) to win, quinella 3,5. REVERBERATES (3) is a valuable filly for later on given she is a granddaughter of Wrap Around, herself a daughter of Beach Gown. This Brad Widdup-housed local has placed at three of her six starts, going within inches of a win at Wyong last time. MALBORK CASTLE (1) is a half to Showtime and Sweet Idea. The son of Castelvecchio is trained by Castelvecchio's' trainer Richard Litt and has placed at six of his eight starts. So ready for 1800m today! BET: REVERBERATES (3) to win, quinella 1,3. AUTUMN HEIR (7) is a possible/probable to go to Nowra today. Go well down there! That being the case, it would open the door for his stablemate JAMARNI (8) who is galloping towards his first win. Could make the case to argue that he turned in a career best last start; Zac Lloyd sticks. EMPRESS TSARINA (6) finished third in that same race at Kembla on June 3 where Jamarni was second. If you like one, you almost have to like the other. BET: AUTUMN HEIR (7) to win but if scratched JAMARNI (8) to win. NOTHING BUT NET (11) was $31 for no good reason when he came down the middle and over the top to win a 1000m 2YO Maiden at Goulburn on debut. The downside is, it wasn't an especially strong affair but the upside is, he won, he will surely take improvement from the day out and he is at home this time. That said, QUEEN'S RHAPSODY (2) 's form is far superior in terms of depth but she still has to go 1300m (first time) from the outside alley. BET: NOTHING BUT NET (11) each-way. CHARLEROI (1) was a $360,000 Easter purchase. Gelding now but still worth mentioning that he is a Dundeel out of a stakeswinning Snitzel granddaughter of Monsoon Wedding. The Sara Ryan-trained 3YO was third on debut in town, fourth on the Kenso after that and then went to Kembla and won, not by far, but still with some authority. VIA VARALLO (8) led throughout to win easily at Nowra after running third to Maison Louis no less! BET: CHARLEROI (1) to win (best bet), Daily Double 1st leg 1, 2nd leg 4. LIKE LUKEY (6) has a tidy C.V of 12 starts, three wins, two seconds and four third. Those three wins came in succession – one by four, one by two-and-a-bit and the third by a length-and-a-half here at her only previous visit. Expecting her to bounce back, big time, off the last start Rosehill run. INCANTATION (8) is a consistent Goldolphin mare who held her ground admirably in town last start. Always looked like a mile-plus type and it's 1800m today. BET: LIKE LUKEY (6) to win, quinella 6,8, box trifecta 5,6,7,8. INOUE (4) is a Peter Snowden-trained 3YO and follows Wayupinsthesky, Thousand Years and Vomo Island as residents past and present at his High Street stables. Inoue won first-up at Gosford then went to a Class 1 at Kembla and won it too only this time he beat King's Secret! Wish the stablemate CASSIEL (2) wasn't here to challenge because they are hard to split now. Cassiel is fast and a last start winner. THE GREY (6), with a home-track advantage. is presumably fitter for his first-up fifth. BET: INOUE (4) to win, quinella 2,4. â– â– â– â– â– NOWRA TIPS

Kensington preview: Co-trainer Gerald Ryan anticipates strong performances from She Conquers and Harry's Evidence

A big drop in weight and a better surface can see handy filly She Conquers cause an upset according to co-trainer Gerald Ryan. She Conquers didn't appreciate the Heavy 10 at Newcastle last start when a safely held fourth behind Lunaite. Prior to that, she was a handy third behind Quartz Legend on a Good 4 over an unsuitably short 1000m at Kembla on April 19 before returning three weeks later to score by a nose from Lyles on a Soft 6 over 1200m. 'She has shown us that she has her fair share of ability,' said Ryan who trains in partnership with Sterling Alexiou. 'She ran really well on debut at Kembla to finish third then we took her to Canterbury and she went awful on the heavy track. A HUGE performance! ðŸ'¥ She Conquers sails down the outside to win Race 1 at Hawkesbury. @GRyanRacing @G1TySchil â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) December 15, 2024 The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'We decided not to run her on a heavy track again but she needed to have a run the other day. Her wheels just spun in the ground at Newcastle. 'She was good her two runs before that.' The three-year-old daughter of Unite And Conquer opened at $13 with TAB Fixed Odds and eased out to $19 behind Super Nui who was $2.50 out to $3.60 in the Hellbent @ Yarraman Park Handicap (1400m) but Ryan feels she shouldn't under estimated. 'She is a filly I have a little a bit of time for and I have always thought she is up to winning a race like this,' he said. 'The firmer the track, the better she will go and stepping up to 1400 metres. I expect her to acquit herself well. 'She carried 60.5kg at Kembla and drops to 54.5kg this week.' In the opening race, the TAB Handicap Maiden (1150m) Ryan and Alexiou saddle up Harry's Evidence. The three-year-old son of Harry Angel was backed into a pods-on favourite on debut when runner-up behind Columbia Blue at Hawkesbury on May 27. 'It was a good run on debut,' Ryan said. 'Even though he trialled at Warwick Farm last July, it was his first time away from home this time in and just got a bit lost and wandered around. Great to see COLUMBIA BLUE inherit some of the speed of his uncle, SUPER ONE! He was a $150k yearling from @BellRiver_BR at @inglis_sales Classic 2023. Thank you @PrideRacing & Adam Hyeronimus! â€' PR🟢VEN Thoroughbreds (@ProvenTbreds) May 27, 2025 'I would sooner see them do it in their trials than at their first race start but he ran well. 'He was just beaten by a fitter racehorse on the day who had that race experience.' The son of Harry Angel opened at $6 behind fellow Rosehill prepared gelding, Cold Brew at $2.90. 'You would think he will take plenty of improvement from the experience and he now has a decent hit out under his belt,' he said. 'I also think getting back on a better surface will help him. It was a Heavy 10 the other day. 'I think he will acquit him very well.' Ryan and Alexiou are hoping She Conquers and Harry's Evidence can end a run of near misses after six minor placings from their last nine runners. 'It gets a bit frustrating and hopefully they get a bit of luck go their way.' Ryan and Alexiou also have some good chances at their home track meeting on Saturday with Silentsar and High Blue Sea resuming while Pajanti is looking to bounce back after a luckless run at Rosehill two weeks ago. 'Silentsar and High Blue Sea have come back well and have trialled nicely,' Ryan said. 'Silentsar, the ground doesn't worry him a great deal but High Blue Sea prefers a firmer deck. 'If the rain doesn't come, he will be in there with a real chance. 'Pajanti was good first-up didn't have a lot of luck the other day.' â– â– â– â– â– Trainer John Sargent has three options this week with in-form stayer Casual Connection including a couple of stakes races but is leaning toward the easiest scenario at home. Sargent has Casual Connection nominated for the Listed Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill and the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday but feels the Benchmark 78 Handicap (2400m) on the Kensington is the way to go. 'It's an easier option on the Kensington obviously so we might go there,' said Sargent. 'It's not a strong field, Molly (Bourke) knows him well and it looks a good race for him.' Casual Connection has been up for quite a while but continues to race with plenty of zest with wins at two of his last five starts along with a handy third. The son of Complacent is coming off a near three length win from Wuddzz in this same grade and over the same distance at Randwick on May 24. ðŸ¤ Casual Connection relishes on the heavy track and brains them at Randwick! @jsargentracing | @MollyBourke7 â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 24, 2025 'While he is racing well and with confidence, we will keep him going in his grade,' he said. 'It's just across the road and he has raced well on the Kensington before although he hasn't won there. 'He runs on speed and can get going before the turn. He's a big, free rolling horse. 'As long as the track is soft or worse; that's what he likes. 'It should be ideal for him. We will just keep our fingers crossed.' Sargent has been pleased with lightly-raced three-year-old Vetwelve and feels he is knocking on the door for his first win in the Maiden Plate (1400m). The son of Grunt resumed this preparation with a third behind Kundabung over this track and distance in a Super Maiden on May 14 before a fourth behind Homeric but with excuses at Kembla on May 31. 'I thought his first-up run was very good but in his second-up run, he didn't handle the very heavy track,' Sargent said. 'He was in the worst going down near the rail and it just didn't work out. 'I think with the better track conditions this week, you will see a better horse. 'Nash (Rawiller) is back on this week. He rode him first-up so he knows him well. 'He is right in form now and he is as fit as we can get him this looks a good chance for him to clear the maiden ranks as long as he gets a trouble free run.'
