Man credits store clerk for big lottery win in NC. ‘You've just changed my life'
A North Carolina man almost walked away from a lottery ticket that held a life-changing prize, lottery officials said.
Kenneth Skipper tried to purchase the ticket three times, but the card reader wasn't working, he told the North Carolina Education Lottery, according to a May 27 news release.
It was the clerk who encouraged him to try one more time, leading him to a $2 million jackpot prize in the $2 Million Vault game, lottery officials said.
Skipper said he stared at the ticket after he learned of the win for about five minutes, according to the lottery.
'I called my wife and told her, 'I think I just won the lottery,'' he said. 'She started freaking out.'
Then, Skipper told lottery officials he went back into the store and found the clerk.
'I pulled her to the side and said, 'You've just changed my life,'' Skipper said, according to the lottery.
He bought the winning ticket from a convenience store in Fayetteville, about a 140-mile drive southeast from Charlotte, lottery officials said.
He plans to use the prize to pay bills and give to his church, the lottery said.
The $2 Million Vault game began May 6 and features prizes ranging from $20 to the $2 million jackpot, according to the game's web page.
The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 1,729,430, and the odds of winning overall are 1 in 3.35, lottery officials said.
Two out of three jackpot prizes remain to be claimed, the lottery said.

Lottery player thought she won $10,000 — but NC prize was worth 100 times more
A North Carolina woman couldn't take her eyes off her winning lottery ticket, totally unaware that it hid an even larger prize. 'I just kept looking at it,' Karina Goicochea told the North Carolina Education Lottery, initially thinking she won $10,000 on a $1,000,000 Cashword scratch-off game. She bought the $10 ticket at a BP Station in Zebulon, lottery officials said in a June 13 news release. It wasn't until she went to collect her winnings at lottery headquarters that she learned her windfall was worth 100 times more. Goicochea had won the $1 million jackpot, beating odds of 1 in 1,210,185 to snag the top prize. 'Reality still hasn't hit me yet,' the Johnston County woman told officials. 'I won the big one.' She chose the lump sum payment of $600,000 and took home $430,503 after taxes, the lottery said. Goicochea told officials she plans to invest her winnings. One of the four $1 million prizes remains up for grabs in the $1,000,000 Cashword game, according to the lottery's website. Zebulon is about a 20-mile drive east from downtown Raleigh.

Lottery player uses same series of numbers in NC — and it pays off in a big way
A man who consistently uses the same numbers in the North Carolina Education Lottery has finally seen his dedication pay off big time. On Thursday, June 5, the Carolina Cash 5 drawing's winning numbers were 5, 12, 19, 27 and 35, and that seemingly random set of digits made Antoine Williams a top-prize winner. The jackpot was $439,972, lottery officials said in a June 10 news release. Williams, who lives in Fayetteville, paid $1 for the ticket while playing online. No one appeared more surprised than Williams. 'It's breathtaking to think about. I'm still in shock,' he told lottery officials. His friends were also in disbelief, including a former union representative. 'She went nuts,' he said in the release. Why Williams clings to the same series of numbers was not revealed, but it helped him beat odds of 1 in 962,598, officials said. He picked up his money at lottery headquarters in Raleigh on June 9, and the prize was adjusted $315,680 after taxes. He plans to use his pot of money to buy a car, then invest in starting a logistics business, officials said. Carolina Cash 5 is a rolling jackpot game with a prize that grows bigger until someone picks the right set of numbers.

Man discovers his NC lottery ticket is worth 1,000 times more than he believed
A lottery player got confused — in the best kind of way — when he realized his $2,000 win was actually $2,000,000, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery. Jose Analco Ramirez of Greensboro purchased the $20 scratch-off in the 100X The Cash game on Thursday, May 29, lottery officials said in a May 30 news release. The odds of winning $2 million, the game's top prize, are 1 in 1,853,616. 'I saw the two at first and thought it was $2,000,' Ramirez told lottery officials. 'It was like a fairy tale turned into reality. ... It just didn't feel real. It still doesn't feel real.' The ticket was purchased at a Circle K store on New Garden Road in Greensboro, about a 75-mile drive northwest from Raleigh. Ramirez went to lottery headquarters in Raleigh on Friday, May 30, to collect his prize and had to make a tough choice between a smaller lump sum check or 'an annuity of $100,000 over 20 years,' officials said. 'He chose the lump sum of $1.2 million and, after required tax withholdings, took home $861,006,' lottery officials said. Ramirez told lottery officials he plans 'to invest and possibly start a business.'
