Ramazan bazaars offer limited relief to public
With the first 10 days of Ramazan coming to a close, inflation in Rawalpindi remains unchecked, and the gap between official price lists and actual market rates keeps widening.
The provincial government, under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's directives, has set up Ramadan bazaars with slightly lower prices, but shoppers are far from satisfied, complaining about the quality of goods.
Sugar is available at a subsidised rate of Rs130 per kilogramme in these markets, but the catch is that each customer can only buy a single kilogramme per CNIC.
Frustrated by skyrocketing prices, many citizens have turned to these bazaars, only to be disappointed by subpar produce.
A quick comparison of market rates versus Ramazan bazaars paints a clear picture of the inflation crisis.
Essentials like potatoes, onions, and tomatoes are significantly cheaper in the bazaars, but items like garlic, ginger, and green chilies remain expensive.
Fruits follow a similar pattern, with apples, oranges, and guavas selling at lower prices in the subsidised markets.
Poultry prices continue to climb, with live chicken going for Rs460 per kg in the open market compared to Rs404 per kg in Ramazan bazaars, while chicken meat fluctuates between Rs750 and 800 per kg in regular shops but costs Rs575 per kg in the government-run markets.
Eggs are slightly cheaper in the Ramazan bazaars but still burden consumers at Rs282 per dozen.
Despite the minor relief in Ramazan bazaars, residents argue that the one-kilogramme sugar limit is impractical, urging the government to increase it to at least 2.5 to 5 kg per household to accommodate Ramazan necessities.

Being refugee not a crime, says CM

In another statement, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed grief over the death of three tourists from Lahore due to collapse of a glacier near Mansehra. The chief minister also expressed sorrow over the demise of senior actress Ayesha Khan.

100,000 sanitary workers to get reward money
LAHORE: Reward money announced by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz will be distributed among more than 100,000 workers of the Suthra Punjab Programme on June 21 (today) for their performance during the grand operation on Eid-ul-Azha. In this regard, a ceremony will be held at the tehsil level across Punjab in which the workers will be invited. This decision was taken during a meeting that was chaired by Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq on Friday. Punjab Local Government Secretary Shakeel Ahmed Mian, Special Secretary Asia Gul, Additional Secretary Ahmer Kaifi, Deputy Commissioners and chief officers of municipal bodies were also present. The Minister said that instead of calling all the workers on the same day, if necessary, the reward money can be distributed among the remaining people on the next day. He said the Chief Minister had announced the reward of Rs 10,000 each for over 100,000 workers who worked hard and with commitment during the hot weather on the Eid days. 'The workers worked hard during the scorching sun, and thus we saw exemplary cleanliness on Eid-ul-Azha. Hence, the Punjab government announced the reward to recognise the hard work put in by the workers,' he added. He directed the officials concerned to invite elected representatives to the ceremonies, observing that public representatives also played a full role in the awareness campaign during the grand operation. On this occasion, the Secretary said that bank drafts will be transparently given to the workers, adding that no worker of the Clean Punjab Programme should be deprived of the prize money. Signal-free corridor takes shape in Pindi
Nawaz Sharif Flyover from Khawaja Corporation on Adiala Road, along with two underpasses on Mall Road and an underground pedestrian walkway, has entered its final phase of completion. These projects are expected to be inaugurated later this month. Additionally, the construction of a flyover and underpasses at the busy Kachehri Chowk, as well as underpasses at Qasim Market, Race Course, and Charing Cross, is expected to commence soon — likely during the ongoing summer vacation period of educational institutions, in order to expedite completion. Having been constructed at a cost of Rs2.3 billion, Nawaz Sharif Flyover at Khawaja Corporation Chowk on Adiala Road is in its final stage. Although the project could not be inaugurated on June 3 as initially planned, it is now expected to be inaugurated by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on June 30. On the same day, she is also likely to inaugurate two underpasses on Mall Road — at Flashman Hotel Chowk and Mall Plaza Chowk — as well as the underground pedestrian walkway near AFIC. This project is expected to be completed by June 30 as well, with a total cost of Rs4.388b. Meanwhile, a decision has been made to construct additional underpasses at three of the busiest intersections on Mall Road and Peshawar Road: Qasim Market, Race Course Chowk, and Charing Cross. The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) has been instructed to relocate underground utilities — electricity, gas, water supply, and sewerage — from these locations to facilitate construction. Moreover, a major project involving the remodelling and expansion of Kachehri Chowk has been approved. This project includes the construction of two flyovers and three underpasses, with an estimated cost of Rs8.5b. The Punjab government has already allocated funds for this project. Sources say following the completion of the two flyovers and three underpasses at Kachehri Chowk, and with the construction of five underpasses on Mall Road and Peshawar Road, this entire route will effectively become a signal-free corridor up to Motorway Chowk. It is worth noting that an underpass at Golra Mor has already been completed and is operational. The Punjab government is funding all these infrastructure projects, which are being executed by the provincial Communications and Works (C&W) Department. Schools get operational boost The Punjab Education Department has released an amount of Rs464.5 million for the operational expenses of all public schools in the Rawalpindi Division. An amount of Rs4.58715 billion has been released for the fourth and final quarter of the outgoing fiscal year to cover operational expenses and utility bills for all 43,000 public primary, middle, high, and higher secondary schools across the province.
