Poll finds public turning to AI bots for news updates

PARIS: People are increasingly turning to generative artificial intelligence chatbots like ChatGPT to follow day-to-day news, a respected media report published Tuesday found.
The yearly survey from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism found "for the first time" that significant numbers of people were using chatbots to get headlines and updates, director Mitali Mukherjee wrote.
Attached to Britain's Oxford University, the Reuters Institute annual report is seen as unmissable for people following the ways the media is changing.
Just 7% of people report using AI to find news, according to the Institute's poll of 97,000 people in 48 countries, carried out by YouGov.
But the proportion is higher among the young, at 12% of under-35s and 15% of under-25s.
The biggest-name chatbot – OpenAI's ChatGPT – is the most widely used, followed by Google's Gemini and Meta's Llama.
Respondents appreciated relevant, personalised news from chatbots.
Many more used AI to summarise (27%), translate (24%) or recommend (21%) articles, while almost one in five asked questions about current events.
Distrust remains, with those polled on balance saying AI risked making the news less transparent, less accurate and less trustworthy.
Rather than being programmed, today's powerful AI "large language models" (LLMs) are "trained" on vast quantities of data from the web and other sources – including news media like text articles or video reports.
Once trained, they are able to generate text and images in response to users' natural-language queries.
But they present problems including "hallucinations", the term used when AI invents information that fits patterns in their training data but is not true.
Scenting a chance at revenue in a long-squeezed market, some news organisations have struck deals to share their content with developers of AI models.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) allows the Mistral model from the French company of the same name to access its archive of news stories going back decades.
Other media have launched copyright cases against AI makers over alleged illegal use of their content, for example the New York Times against ChatGPT developer OpenAI.
Away from AI, the Reuters Institute report pointed to traditional media – TV, radio, newspapers and news sites – losing ground to social networks and video-sharing platforms.
Almost half of 18-24-year-olds report that social media like TikTok is their main source of news, especially in emerging countries like India, Brazil, Indonesia and Thailand.
The shift in news consumption habits has hit outlets' bottom lines.
Tuesday's report said it has also given a leg-up to politicians like US President Donald Trump or Argentina's Javier Milei, who have been able to talk past traditional gatekeepers to reach voters directly. – AFP

Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images/File Photo (Reuters) -NBA star Kevin Durant has purchased a minority stake in French soccer club Paris St Germain, the Champions League winners said on Friday, and the Phoenix Suns forward will provide expertise on their planned expansion into basketball. Durant, two-time NBA champion and four-time Olympic gold medallist, has signed a share purchase and strategic partnership agreement with PSG's majority shareholder Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), through his company Boardroom. "It is an honour to partner with QSI and to be a shareholder of Paris St Germain, a club and a city that is deeply close to my heart," Durant, who won gold at the Paris Olympics last year, said. "This club has big plans and I look forward to being part of the next phase of growth and exploring new investment opportunities with QSI." One of those opportunities is likely to come in the world of basketball, with PSG already involved in early-stage talks with the NBA regarding potential investment and venues for a new basketball league in Europe. Durant, who had already forged a link with PSG through the club's minority shareholder Arctos Partners, will partner on a wide range of commercial, investment and content production initiatives. The 36-year-old will also support the club in its strategy of diversification and growth on sporting and commercial fronts, including developing the club's strategy in the United States and other international markets. PSG said in their release that Durant would provide "expertise on PSG's multi-sport strategy, particularly regarding future projects in the field of basketball". Durant was recently included in Forbes' 2025 list of the world's highest-paid athletes, coming in at number 10 with earnings of $101.4 million. (Reporting by Trevor StynesEditing by Toby Davis)

TEAMSTERS AT AIRGAS PREPARE TO STRIKE
Ohio and Michigan Workers Demand Fair Contract, End to Unfair Labor Practices WASHINGTON, June 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Teamsters at Airgas are preparing to take action as the company continues to stall at the bargaining table and violate federal labor laws. Workers represented by Teamsters Local 283 in Ferndale, Mich., and Teamsters Local 507 in Cleveland have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike. If Airgas fails to present a fair contract, workers in Michigan and Ohio will join Teamsters Local 701 members in New Jersey, who were already forced onto the picket line last week. 'Airgas management is playing hardball and actively undermining our members' rights,' said Juan Campos, Director of the Teamsters Tankhaul Division and Teamsters International Vice President At-Large. 'The company is dragging out negotiations on purpose. They think they can wear our members down if they keep stalling. But Teamsters are more fired up than ever and ready for this fight.' Airgas, a subsidiary of French multinational Air Liquide, is the largest U.S. distributor of industrial, medical, and specialty gases. The company pulled in nearly $30 billion last year — but despite record profits and revenue, it continues to break the law and refuses to offer contracts that meet industry standards. 'Our members are done being strung along by this company,' said Dan Chavez, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 507. 'A strike isn't our first choice, but if Airgas won't bargain in good faith or stop violating our rights, we're prepared to take action. This is a fight Airgas will regret starting.' The Teamsters represent hundreds of Airgas workers across the country. If the company fails to present a fair contract and refuses to rectify its unfair labor practices, a multi-local strike could see picket lines extend nationwide. 'The company has refused to offer a contract that respects the skill, dedication, and value our members bring to the job every single day,' said Steve Hicks, President of Local 283. 'If a strike happens, the blame lies squarely with Airgas management.' Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.3 million hardworking people in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Visit for more information. Google offers to tweak search results to promote rivals, stave off EU antitrust fine, documents show
FILE PHOTO: A logo is pictured at Google's European Engineering Center in Zurich, Switzerland July 19, 2018. Picture taken July 19, 2018. REUTERS/Arnd Wiegmann/File Photo BRUSSELS (Reuters) -Alphabet's Google has proposed more changes to its search results to better showcase rivals in a bid to stave off a possible hefty EU antitrust fine, according to documents seen by Reuters. Google's latest proposal came three months after the European Commission charged the U.S. tech giant with favouring its own services such as Google Shopping, Google Hotels and Google Flights over rivals in breach of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The landmark DMA sets out a list of dos and don'ts for Big Tech aimed at reining in their power and giving rivals more room to compete and consumers more choices. Under Google's new proposal a vertical search service (VSS) selected on objective and non-discriminatory criteria would get its own box at the top of the search page with the same format, information and features as Google's, the document said. The box would contain three direct links picked by the VSS, to hotels, airlines, restaurants and transport. Other VSS, which are specialised search engines within Google, would be ranked below but without a box unless users click on them. "We do not agree with the (Commission's) preliminary findings' position but, on a without prejudice basis, we want to find a workable solution to resolve the present proceedings," the documents sent by both Google and the Commission to the rivals said. The rivals will provide feedback at a July 8 meeting called by the Commission. A number of rivals, who did not want to be named ahead of the meeting, told Reuters that the changes still do not go far enough to ensure a level playing field.
