Mengo claims she received death threats following her sex harassment complaint against EC Judge President Mbenenge
JOHANNESBURG - Eastern Cape High Court secretary, Andiswa Mengo, claims she has received death threats following her sexual harassment complaint against the division's judge president, Selby Mbenenge.
Mengo's complaint is the first ever that has led to a probe which could lead to the judge president's impeachment.
The top judge is accused of making unwanted sexual advances towards Mengo between 2021 and 2022.

The tribunal has so far heard evidence from expert witnesses who have corroborated some of the testimony provided by Mengo in May.
Hearings have been postponed to the end of June.
Mengo laid her official sexual harassment complaint against the division's top judge in 2023.
Since then, Mengo has been working in the same division of the high court, taking leave from work each time the Judicial Conduct Tribunal sits to investigate the allegations she has levelled against Mbenenge.
Now, it's alleged that she received a handwritten note at her desk which stated that a "bullet was waiting for" her.
During her evidence in chief before the tribunal, Mengo had also testified that she had received threats shortly after laying her complaint against the senior judge.
While the tribunal is expected to sit again from 30 June, it's expected that the panel will be mindful of this.
The matter has been escalated to the Office of the Chief Justice and law enforcement authorities.

'She is still alive': Joslin Smith hope renewed
The National Prosecuting Authority has renewed hope that little Joslin Smith is still alive despite being missing for over a year. The Salanha Bay girl's disappearance has sparked a national, and even international, rescue effort. Her mother, Kelly Smith, and two others – Jacquin 'Boeta' Appollis and Steveno van Rhyn – have since been convicted and sentenced for kidnapping and child trafficking. Speaking in a webinar this week, NPA prosecutor Zelda Swanepoel shared her beliefs about Joslin Smith. Earlier this month, Swapepoel helped the state to convict Joslin's mother, Kelly Smith, the latter's boyfriend, Jacquin 'Boeta' Appollis, and their pal, Steveno van Rhyn. A life sentence for trafficking and kidnapping was handed down by Western Cape High Court judge, Nathan Erasmus. She said of the search for the missing girl: 'We have done a comprehensive search in Saldanha of all the exhibits. 'Everything that was found in all of those dunes, all the bones, all the clothing, was analysed, there were no positive DNA results found on anything. She continued: 'I'm convinced that she is still alive. However, I don't know where she is. I can only hope we find her.' Will Kelly Smith ever reveal where her daughter Joslin is? The Saldanha Bay girl went missing on 19 February 2024. Images via YouTube screenshot: SABC Swanepoel added that Joslin's case was the first prosecution she had worked on where the missing child had not been found. She added that much of the case hung on the state witness Lourentia Lombaard. The NPA was also banking on the possibility that Joslin's mother would testify. 'We were always hopeful during the trial that the accused would come and testify in the main trial. The plan was to destroy their credibility and demonstrate the improbabilities in their versions. Yes, their decision to remain silent, especially Kelly, was very disappointing,' she added. Meanwhile, Joslin's mother Kelly Smith as well as Appollis and van Rhyn have filed their notices this week for leave to appeal their convictions and sentences. The NPA are also awaiting the fate of the state witness Lourentia Lombaard, whose verdict will be announced by Judge Erasmus at an appointed date. A 204 inquiry will determine if Lombaard will be granted indemnity based on her testimony. If the court does find that Lombaard did not testify truthfully, she could face prosecution for perjury and related charges. Lombaard previously stated under oath that Joslin's mother, Kelly Smith, allegedly sold her to a sangoma for R20 000. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . City Power cuts supply to property housing undocumented migrants
City Power, with support from Johannesburg's Public Safety Department, disconnected electricity at a residential property in Houghton following the discovery of illegal and hazardous living arrangements. On Wednesday, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) raided the house and found about 90 undocumented foreign nationals crammed into the premises. Also, the authorities cited severe overcrowding, poor sanitation, and non-compliance with municipal by-laws. The living conditions raised alarm over safety, public health, and the unlawful use of City services. City Power swiftly disconnected the building's electricity through a high-level intervention. 'In line with City Power's mandate to uphold the integrity of the electricity grid and ensure lawful consumption, our team removed the feeder cable supplying the property and the internal cables within the yard,' said spokesperson Isaac Mangena. Furthermore, he confirmed that this action, known as a Level 3 disconnection, is the most severe cut-off used only in serious electricity infrastructure abuse or illegal connections. The operation forms part of a campaign to clamp down on hijacked or illegally occupied properties in Johannesburg. Additionally, City Power continues to work with other departments to reclaim urban spaces and enforce safety regulations. 'We continue to support interdepartmental operations that aim to reclaim hijacked and unsafe buildings across Johannesburg, safeguarding residents and ensuring responsible use of municipal services,' Mangena added. The disconnection signals the city's commitment to preventing resource misuse and protecting residents from unsafe environments. City Power urges the public to report suspicious electricity connections and illegal activity through the toll-free number 0800 002 587. A look inside the Gupta mansions going up for auction
Three high-class Gupta mansions in Saxonwold, Johannesburg, will be up for auction on 24 July 2025. This follows the business rescue for the family's company, Confident Concept (Pty) Ltd, which the properties fall under. Park Village Auction's Clive Lazarus described the sale as signalling the 'beginning of the end' of the seven-year saga. The viewing of the properties, handled by Park Village Auctions, will be held between 6 and 20 July 2025. The first mansion will be the triple-storey residence at 5 Saxonwold Drive, featuring eight bedrooms, extensive living and entertainment areas, an indoor swimming pool, an expansive rooftop patio, staff accommodation, and ample garaging. Last but not least on the list is number 3 Saxonwold Drive single-storey three-bedroom home with a single garage, storeroom, and staff accommodation. The number 3 Saxonwold Drive. The entire contents of each house, namely furniture and appliances, will be sold as a single lot (not individual items) following each respective property. To be part of the bid, you have to register and pay the relevant refundable deposits. Viewings of the properties will be held on 6, 13, 19 and 20 July 2025 from 10:00 to 16:00. The Saxonwold properties once hosted prominent figures such as the former Deputy Finance Minister, Mcebisi Jonas, who confessed at the Zondo commission about bribes and corruption he encountered during a meeting at one of the Gupta residences. The family's business, Confident Concept (Pty) Ltd, has been involved in two legal battles, including business rescue proceedings following financial distress and disputes over property development with municipal authorities. The company owned a substantial portfolio of properties, including those adjacent to the infamous Saxonwold compound in Johannesburg. Notably, these properties were embroiled in litigation with the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), allegedly owing R726,695 in rates and taxes as of 2022. After years of several appeals at the Supreme Court of Appeal, the Appellate Division finally ruled, allowing the Confident Concepts properties to go up for auction and 'hopefully lead to a long-awaited payday for creditors,' says Lazarus.
