A recent trial involving 20,000 civil service workers in the UK has found that artificial intelligence tools, when integrated into daily workflows, can save government employees an average of 26 minutes a day, equivalent to roughly 13 working days a year. 'The objective of this experiment was to understand the value that an AI tool such as M365 Copilot would bring when deployed across a large portion of the UK government. Value was defined as improvements in efficiency, task completion rates, and overall user satisfaction,' the report reads.advertisementThe findings are part of a three-month pilot conducted across several government departments, including the Ministry of Justice, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and agencies handling welfare, pensions and child services. The initiative tested Microsoft 365 Copilot, an AI assistant built into Microsoft tools such as Word, Outlook, Teams, Excel, and PowerPoint.Participants used Copilot to manage routine tasks like drafting documents, replying to emails, setting up meetings and preparing presentations. According to the final study, 'trial participants saved an average of 26 minutes a day when using M365 Copilot.'
The trial was launched as part of a broader push to modernise government operations and explore how new technologies could increase efficiency and reduce bureaucracy. UK Technology Secretary Peter Kyle presented the findings at SXSW London, noting that artificial intelligence has the potential to 'help us work smarter, reduce red tape, and make better use of taxpayers' money.'advertisementThe report showed a high level of satisfaction among users, with 'user sentiment overwhelmingly positive, with 82 per cent expressing they would not want to return to their pre-Copilot working conditions.' Additionally, 'over 70 per cent of users agreed that M365 Copilot reduced time spent searching for information, performing mundane tasks, and increased time spent on more strategic activities.'That said, the trial also revealed challenges and limitations. Some users raised concerns over security and data handling, especially when dealing with sensitive or complex material. As noted in the report, 'perceived concerns with security and the handling of sensitive data led to reduced benefits in a minority of cases. Limitations were observed when dealing with complex, nuanced, or data-heavy aspects of work.'Still, the majority of feedback was optimistic. The experiment reported high engagement levels, with '39 per cent of users using it multiple times a day, and a further 43 per cent using it at least multiple times a week.' Satisfaction scores also reflected this enthusiasm, with users rating their overall experience at 7.7 out of 10, and 8.2 out of 10 for recommending the tool to others.The AI assistant was most frequently used within Microsoft Teams, which saw the highest adoption rate of 71 per cent. However, adoption was notably lower for other tools: Excel peaked at 23 per cent and PowerPoint at 24 per cent. Usage of Word and Outlook declined slightly toward the end of the experiment, while Copilot Chat showed a small recovery after a brief dip.advertisementThe trial found that 'results were consistent across grades and professions, with differences observed in how the tool was used and where benefits were realised.' Some employees with conditions like dyslexia and dyspraxia also found the AI tools especially helpful, enabling them to complete work more effectively.While 'only 17 per cent [of users] did not notice any clear time savings,' more than a third of respondents reported saving over 30 minutes a day. The study concludes that if such results were applied across the wider civil service, the time saved could significantly improve productivity and free up workers for higher-value tasks.

To make text bold, add the asterisk (*) symbol before and after the word or phrase – for example, when adding an asterisk before and after the word *Hey*, the message will have the word Hey in bold. Similarly, to send text in italics, add an underscore (_) before and after the word or phrase – for example, when adding an underscore before and after the word _Hey_, the message will have the word Hey in italics. To cross-out a message, add the tilde (~) symbol before and after the word or phrase – for example, when adding a tilde before and after the word ~Hey~, the message will have the word Hey crossed-out. These elements can also be combined; for instance, it is also possible to send a message in both bold and italics by using both symbols *_before and after_* the message. Find messages within a chat In times when you need to find a specific message that someone sent, you can easily find it in the specific chat or group instead of endlessly scrolling. To do so, Android users should open the desired chat, and click the three vertical dots in the top right corner. Later, in the drop-down menu click on Search, and type the desired word(s) and click on Search or OK on the keyboard. Apple users can do so by opening the desired chat. They would need to press Contact to open Contact Info and click on 'Chat search'. Later, input the related keyword or phrase and click on Search on the keyboard. This feature also allows you to search for a message that was sent on a particular day or time. Use the 'view once' feature When sending sensitive or private photos or videos, the 'View Once' feature can come in handy. This allows a photo or video that is sent to only be seen once, and does not allow the receiver to save or screenshot them. Click on the icon with the encircled number 1 before sending a photo or video to utilise this feature. Set a custom WhatsApp wallpaper WhatsApp allows you to set different wallpapers for different chats and groups, as well as change the colour or even upload an image as background from your photo gallery. To set a custom wallpaper, click on the three vertical dots and open Settings via the dropdown menu. Click on 'Chats', then 'Default chat theme', then 'Wallpaper'. You can now choose your desired wallpaper from WhatsApp's collection or from your photo gallery. Pin important messages WhatsApp now lets you pin up to three messages within a chat; useful for saving key messages like addresses, to-do lists, or important information. To pin a message in a chat or group, Android users can long-press the desired message, press the three vertical dots on the top-right and click on Pin. iPhone users can swipe right on their chosen message and press the Pin option. Swipe to reply instantly On both Android and Apple, simply swipe right on a message to quote and reply instantly. It is much quicker than long-pressing the message and pressing 'Reply'. Turn on disappearing messages For chats that are private or confidential, WhatsApp's disappearing messages feature allows for messages sent in a particular chat or group to be deleted automatically. You can choose between a set time of 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days. Android users can activate disappearing messages by pressing the three vertical dots on the top right. Later, select Settings and then Privacy and opt for Default Message Timer. You can now choose your desired time and chat/group, then press Apply. On the other hand, Apple users can go to Settings then Privacy and later click on Default message timer. They can choose the desired time and chat/group and then press the green check mark icon. Stop media auto-saving to your phone WhatsApp automatically saves every photo and video received to the phone's gallery, which may take up unnecessary space. To turn it off, Android users should click the three vertical dots on the top-right, then Settings, then move on to Chats. Here, you should turn off the 'Media visibility' option. Many professionals are worried about AI taking over jobs, especially in white-collar roles. However, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman believes that the fear of AI, particularly the panic over mass job losses, is all due to its exaggeration. Hoffman believes that while AI will certainly bring significant transformation to the job sector, there will be no bloodbath for white-collar made these comments in response to a statement by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei during an interview with Fast Company. Amodei had told Axios that AI could lead to a dramatic overhaul of white-collar work. While Hoffman acknowledged that change is inevitable, he dismissed the idea that the rise of AI would spell catastrophe for is right that over, call it, a decade or three, it will bring a massive set of job transformations. And some of that transformation will involve replacement issues,' Hoffman said. He emphasised that the shift in jobs due to AI should not be confused with total job destruction. 'Just because a function's coming that has a replacement area on a certain set of tasks doesn't mean all of this job's going to get replaced.' To support his views, Hoffman pointed to the example of the launch of spreadsheet software like Excel. He highlighted that although Excel impacted the nature of accounting work, it did not eliminate the need for accountants. Instead, the accounting profession evolved and even expanded in scope. 'Everyone was predicting that the accountant job would go away. And actually, in fact, the accountant job got broader, richer,' he maintains a clear view that, in future, AI will assist humans rather than replace them entirely. He envisions a world of 'person plus AI doing things' as the most likely scenario going forward. Therefore, AI-powered tools like GPT-4, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot should be used to enhance departments — not eliminate them. He warns that trying to completely substitute humans with AI would be a serious mistake. 'Could I just replace, for example, my accountants with GPT-4? The answer is absolutely not. That would be a disastrous mistake.'The LinkedIn co-founder also pushed back against the notion that automation through AI would wipe out entire departments. 'Let's replace my marketing department or my sales department with GPT-4. Absolutely not,' he said, adding, 'that's nowhere close to a bloodbath.'However, Hoffman is not denying the potential for job replacement altogether. He acknowledges that some roles are more vulnerable — especially those that have already been reduced to scripted, mechanical tasks. 'What jobs are most likely to be replaced? They're the ones where we're trying to program human beings to act like robots.' Yet, even in such cases, Hoffman believes AI will not take over everything. Much will depend on how companies choose to implement AI in their workflows.
