Steven Naismith breaks silence on Kilmarnock manager job as out of work boss open to replacing Derek McInnes

Daily Record15-05-2025

The former Rangers and Scotland hero is out of work after leaving Hearts last year
Steven Naismith has opened the door to a potential return to football after responding to calls that he will be named as the next manager of Kilmarnock.
Record Sport exclusively told you on Tuesday that the former striker is the leading candidate to succeed Killie boss Derek McInnes, who will be taking up the reins at Hearts next week.

McInnes was due to lead his team out for the final time against the Jambos in the last game of the season on Saturday, but the club have now announced that he and his coaching staff will not be involved in the clash at Rugby Park.

Naismith has been out of work since getting the sack at Tynecastle last October, despite previously leading the Jambos to a third place finish in the Premiership last season, securing group stage football in Europe as a result.
The 38-year-old started his playing career with the Ayrshire side in 2003 before winning a move to Rangers four years later.
And while he says he will only step back into the dugout when the time is right, the ex Scotland international has hinted that he would be interested in the vacancy soon to be left by McInnes.
Speaking on The Warm-Up, he said: "I'm having a great time here. You flew straight in (with the question). No, I'm here! My things haven't changed. I will go serious for you and give you a good answer.
"I'm enjoying the time out. It takes over your life, management. Whether you say life/work balance, it doesn't. It's on your mind all the time. I loved it, but I've loved my time out.

"I'm at the point where everything needs to be perfect for me; the right club, you believe in what it is, and you're going to make a difference. That's where I sit.
"I have spoken to clubs in the past and I have just felt it's not been right, I will probably speak to clubs in the future and if that changes then my mind will change.
"I'm really relaxed and enjoy my life at the moment.

"Everything in your life takes a back seat, whether you like it or not. See for me, that has got to be the way it is, you have got to be 100 percent committed and that is the focus. That is why it is so intense.
"The buzz of me being a manager and what I believe I can give when I am all in, I think I could be a success and I think my first year shows that.
"I'm not putting any pressure, I am not going to jump into a football club just to get back in, I don't think that is the right thing to do.
"If the right opportunity comes and it ticks everything and I'm ready, then I will do it."

Lee Miller on Lennon's transfer ambitions and future

The former Aberdeen, Dundee United and Hearts striker knew from an early stage that young Lennon had bags of ability. To reinforce that, he was continually told he had something "special" under his own roof. After two seasons as a leading star in the Motherwell team despite his tender years, which has included captaining them at Hampden, Miller Jr is also now a full Scotland international. He has been continually linked with a move away over the past year or so and his dad thinks the time for that to become a reality is upon us. 'I think so, yeah," he admitted. "There's a lot of interest in Lennon. I go on Twitter and it's a new club every day. Read more: 'In terms of bids going in for him, there's nothing went in this summer. 'There were a few bids in January and the valuation of Lennon wasn't met, so it's one of those ones we'll just wait. 'Lennon's on holiday now, he's chilling out, just relaxing, ready for the season coming ahead but who knows where that'll be. No idea.' He would like to see the precocious teen go somewhere where he will continue to play games. But both seem to prefer the idea of that being abroad, despite interest from England and Scotland. 'Yeah. His preferable choice would be abroad," Lee said. 'He's not just going to go to a club for the sake of it. It needs to have the right environment, it needs to have the right manager, the right club. 'Lennon's not bothered with the money side of things, that'll come. Obviously it's a short career and you need to earn money. 'But he wants to go and progress his career and then kick on again. So we'll see. I don't know what that'll be. But it needs to be a place where he can then grow again.' Miller took plenty from his Scotland experience (Image: Craig Williamson - SNS Group) One player Miller can take inspiration from is fellow Scotland star Scott McTominay, now a Serie A champion with Napoli and the league's MVP a year after moving out to Italy from Manchester United. The pair bonded on international duty and Miller Sr likes the idea of his son picking things up from players of that ilk. He really liked his time away and I think Scott McTominay took a shine to him and he kind of rubbed shoulders with him bounced ideas off of him and played alongside him," explained the former Falkirk boss. 'Billy (Gilmour) was great for him as well and I think the both of them Billy and Lennon complemented each other in the game although everybody will say it's Liechtenstein. 'It wouldn't have mattered who Lennon played against in that game, he plays the same way. 'And that's a credit to him because a lot of young players go in and they shy away from it or they try something different away from their game. 'It was mad because he looked so creative. That's just the way he plays, watching him from very, very young and he just plays as if he was playing in the playground. He's very coachable and has an understanding of the game and what needs done. Teaming up with McTominay and Gilmour in Naples though? Dad isn't so sure. That's because he wants to see Lennon make the move somewhere he will continue to play lots of games and keep his development going in an upward trajectory. 'But that's the thing, would he play there?," he asked. "I don't know if he would. 'That's alright saying 'Napoli's an incredible club, they've got amazing players.' But that's when you need to look at where do you fit in to that, there needs to be a space that he fits in and is able to flourish and able to progress. 'That all comes down to pathways. Lewis Ferguson could have gone somewhere else and not been a starter and yes you can you can graft away and become that. But there needs to be an actual visual pathway for a player to do that." Asked if he has been surprised by his son's rapid development, Miller Sr added: 'Yes and no. I was told from a very early age he's special. I get goosebumps talking about it. 'Lennon's had a lot went on in his life. He's had a lot to deal with. But he's always had football as a release from everything. 'So I'm surprised how quickly it happened. But I always kind of knew his qualities. He's destined for the top, in my opinion.

Nicolas Kuhn watches dithering RB Leipzig go tame as transfer truth comes to boil over Celtic star

The former Germany youth international is in demand this summer RB Leipzig's pursuit of Celtic star Nicolas Kuhn is set to be turned down a notch - according to a report. Despite dropping off in the second half of last season, the German winger finished the campaign with an impressive 21 goals and 15 assists in 51 matches in all competitions. ‌ Last week, it was reported that the former Bayern Munich kid is a summer target for Bundesliga side Leipzig, who missed out on European football altogether next season with a disappointing seventh place finish in Germany's top tier. ‌ Kuhn has also been touted for a big money switch to Newcastle but Hoops hero and Record Sport columnist Chris Sutton has warned that the wide man is not ready for the step-up and needs another year until his belt at Parkhead first. However, a move from Leipzig for Kuhn - or any player for that matter - will reportedly be on hold until a decision on just who will be in the dugout at the Red Bull Arena next season is made. Die Roten Bullen have been without a permanent boss since March 30 when Marco Rose got the boot after a very underwhelming showing on home soil and in Europe. Former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain number two Zsolt Low was appointed as interim manager for the remainder of the campaign but is not expected to be in contention to land the job on a permanent basis. And while Ole Werner - who stepped down from Werder Bremen last month after leading them to a eight place finish in the Bundesliga - is the favourite to replace Low, German outlet Merkur state that getting the managerial situation sorted will take preference over improving the squad. Leipzig have already snapped up the signing of talented Dutch youngster OH Leuven ahead of the new season but that deal was completed back in April. ‌ The report also states that a potential swoop for Valencia's Spain U21 star Cristhian Mosquera has also cooled until a new man in the hot seat is in place. They claim that Mosquera has gone as far as giving Leizpig a verbal agreement that he wants to move to Germany but won't officially put pen to paper until he knows just who he will be playing under. ‌ You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Rangers and Celtic pages, and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season. Max Aarons to Rangers latest as Gers poised to announce capture of major summer target despite rival interest

New boss Russell Martin made the 25-year-old right-back one of his first summer targets after winning the Ibrox gig earlier this month. With the Gers stars due back for pre-season on Monday, Martin hopes to get the deal concluded quickly for him to travel north and join his side as they build up to the new season. Aarons made over 200 appearances for Martin's former club Norwich and was a youth player in their system during his time there. And he spoke fondly about the impact the former Canaries captain had on his development. He told the Talk Norwich Podcast last month: "The advice he would give and the relationship we built from there, he was almost like a father figure. "It's incredible. I nearly ended up back with them [Martin and Matt Gill] upon leaving Norwich that year, so that shows how the relationship just grew and grew. "They were definitely the ones that initially believed in me for sure." Now he's set to rekindle their relationship in Glasgow as he becomes his second signing after Lyall Cameron's move from Dundee was formally completed last week. And it's claimed Aarons turned down other options down south including in England's top flight. A report by TBR Football says Premier League new boys Leeds United were interested in his securing a loan deal for the former England Under 21 international. Rangers captain James Tavernier spotted training with ex-team-mate and old Premiership rival Ryan Porteous who branded him 'bad loser' Leeds are managed by Daniel Farke who was Aarons former boss at Norwich, and are also owned by 49ers Enterprises - the investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers NFL team. They were part of the US consortium which completed the takeover of Rangers last month. The report also claims Burnley, who secured promotion to the Premier League, and a host of other Championship clubs were interested in the full-back as well. Rangers boss Russell Martin is looking to get players through the door with a tricky Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos on the horizon. Their pursuit of Israeli striker Dor Turgeman has apparently hit 'a major snag', with complications surrounding the current geopolitical landscape there. The Ibrox side are also preparing talks with Belgian star Nico Raskin as Martin looks to build his team around the talented midfielder.
