Punjab govt to reform century-old criminal laws in province

The Punjab government has established a Legal Reforms Committee to amend decades-old criminal laws, aiming to modernise the province's legal framework, Express News reported on Tuesday.
The committee will draft amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898, the Pakistan Penal Code 1860, and the Qanun-e-Shahadat Order 1984.
It will also prepare a draft of the proposed National Security Law.
Reforms will focus on crime prevention, law enforcement efficiency, and public safety, with special emphasis on women and child protection laws.
The committee will also suggest amendments related to counterterrorism, cybercrime, cybersecurity, and interprovincial coordination.
The Punjab Home Department has issued a notification confirming the committee's formation.
DIG Kamran Adil has been appointed as chairman, while Additional Secretary (Judicial) Imran Hussain Ranjha will serve as secretary. Other members include legal and prosecution officials.
The committee is expected to submit its report within three months.
Earlier in December 2024, the Punjab Cabinet, under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, had approved a series of significant reforms and projects aimed at improving governance, agriculture, and social welfare across the province.
Significant approvals included the formal establishment of the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority under the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority Rules 2024.
The cabinet also approved the delegation of hearing powers to Assistant Commissioners for the Punjab Environment and Regulatory Authority.

K-P budget to be approved only after Imran's nod, says CM's aide

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister's Advisor on Information Barrister Dr Saif has said that the provincial budget will not be approved without consultation with Patron-in-Chief Imran Khan. He noted that people voted for the vision of the Patron-in-Chief therefore all key decisions, including the budget, should reflect the public mandate. Speaking to the media, Dr Saif warned that people would not tolerate any disrespect to their democratic mandate. He further cautioned that any attempt to impose an emergency in the province would be short-lived, adding, "A fake government will not survive even a day." The advisor clarified that the authority to dissolve the provincial assembly rested with the Chief Minister, who could exercise it at his discretion. In contrast, the federal and other provincial governments rely on Form 47 - which is based on a "false foundation" and can be toppled with the slightest push, said the K-P CM aide. He reiterated that the people of K-P voted for the ideology of Imran Khan thus all significant decisions must be made in consultation with him. He urged the federal government to refrain from "petty tactics". He accused the federal government of relentlessly trying to undermine the K-P government, adding that the people of the province were being punished for supporting the Patron-in-Chief. "Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa is a vital unit of the federation, and weakening it is tantamount to weakening Pakistan itself," said Saif. He warned that any conspiracy against the province would have serious repercussions. Under the vision of the Patron-in-Chief and the leadership of Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, the province is witnessing rapid development, which is hard to digest by the federal government. He termed K-P a stronghold of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), adding the movement for the release of the Patron-in-Chief will gain full momentum from the province. He alleged that false cases had been registered to confine the Patron-in-Chief, but assured that all such fabricated cases would soon be dismissed.

JI urges govt to convene emergency OIC summit on ME

LAHORE: Chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has urged the government to immediately convene an emergency summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Islamabad, in light of the deteriorating situation in the Middle East. Speaking at Mansoora on Friday, he stated that the recent acts of aggression in Gaza and Iran are being carried out under the patronage of the United States — a country he described as an enemy of the Muslim world. He stressed that the Muslim Ummah, along with peace-loving nations, must urgently adopt a joint strategy to counter US-Israeli aggression. 'After wreaking havoc in Iraq and Afghanistan, the US now appears determined to replicate the same destruction in Iran,' said Rehman. 'It [the US] continues to support India's blatant human rights violations in occupied Kashmir. Without Washington's backing, Israel holds no power — and yet, despite overwhelming international support for a ceasefire in Gaza, the US vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at ending the conflict. This is a deliberate push toward global warfare.' The JI chief reaffirmed that the people of Pakistan stand firmly with the people of Iran. He called on governments of Muslim countries to reject fear of American pressure and boldly represent the sentiments of the Ummah. Criticizing Islamabad's silence, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman noted that despite clear threats of an expanding war — including Israel's attacks on Iran and the US signalling deeper military involvement — the government has failed to take concrete steps. 'The entire Muslim world is looking to Pakistan for leadership,' he said. 'Islamabad must rise to the occasion and play a decisive role on the issues of Gaza and Iran. If the flames of war continue to spread, it will not only engulf the Middle East but also South Asia and beyond — a catastrophe that will be impossible to contain.'
