Internalise quality while expanding higher education sector: Ved Prakash Mishra

: While India progresses towards its 2035 goal of 50% Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education, achieving it would still leave 50% of those eligible for higher education out of the system. This means that the current rate of expansion of higher education institutions in the country is not able to match up to the massive requirement, says Ved Prakash Mishra, Pro-Chancellor, Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences, Wardha, Maharashtra. He was speaking at the inaugural of an international conference on Accreditation, Ranking, and Quality, organised by Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research in Chennai. Dr. Mishra outlined the dichotomy that although no other country was able to match the proliferation of higher education institutions as witnessed in India, it could 'cater to only one-fourth of the numerical requirement of the eligible targeted population', with the present GER nationally being 26.8%. That wasn't the only problem. In the context of 'quantified development and rapidity of multiplication, quality cannot be put to sacrifice', he said, adding that accreditation was an important aspect in that context, and ranking of higher education institutions in India, using global metrics, should be a consequence of the gradation system. In the top 500 institutions ranked globally, India has not been able to cut a mark and, therefore, global standards should be the benchmark to be incorporated and built into the operational system for quality centricity in higher education. Linking accreditation and quality certifying mechanisms will ensure that Indian graduates and post-graduates are globally relevant. In India, there were isolated patches or islands of quality centricity. While there were extraordinary quality centric institutions, there also were a bulk of mediocre and sub-mediocre institutions, and they were important for the cause of higher education. Mainstreaming quality in these institutions will require capacity building at a national level. Uma Sekar, Vice-Chancellor, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, said the two-day conference was being organised to decode the accreditation and ranking system, and navigate through the system to help achieve higher ranks. Ram Darbar at Ayodhya temple now open for devotees: Check timings, pass booking options and more

Ayodhya (UP), The Ram Darbar installed on the first floor of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya was thrown open for devotees on Saturday, officials said. Beginning Saturday, devotees visiting the Ram Mandir can access the Ram Darbar, after a decision to this effect was taken by the temple trust late on Friday evening. Anil Mishra, a member of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust , said that since the decision was made late in the evening, only a limited number of passes for two slots - from 5 pm to 7 pm and from 7 pm to 9 pm - have been arranged for the visits on Saturday. After a meeting with the local administration, Champat Rai, the general secretary of Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, granted approval for devotees to visit the Ram Darbar, Mishra said. Similar to the passes issued for Ram Lalla's darshan, passes will be made available for those wishing to visit the Ram Darbar, he said. Mishra said 300 passes will be available for each of the two-hour time slots -- from 7 to 9 am, 9 am to 11 am, 1 pm to 3 pm, 3 pm to 5 pm, 5 to 7 pm, and 7 pm to 9 pm. The district administration and the temple trust have both been assigned 150 passes each. Among these, 100 passes are for 'special darshan', and 50 for 'easy access darshan', Mishra said. Alongside the idol of Lord Ram, the Ram Darbar also features the idols of Sita, Lakshman, Bharat, Shatrughan and Hanuman. According to the temple trust, among the deities consecrated were Lord Shiva in the northeast corner, Lord Ganesha in the southeast corner, Lord Hanuman in the southern wing, Surya in the southwest corner, Bhagwati in the northwest corner and Annapurna in the northern wing. The temple built in the traditional Nagara style spans 360 feet in length, 235 feet in width, and rises 161 feet high. Prisons Department to join hands with HYDRAA to develop Cherlapally Lake in Hyderabad

The residents of Cherlapally in Hyderabad will soon enjoy a beautiful public space surrounding a rejuvenated lake adjoining the Central Prison. Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has been assigned the responsibility of developing and beautifying the 58-acre Cherlapally Lake, on the request of Soumya Mishra, Director General of the Prisons Department. HYDRAA engineering officers stated that as part of the rejuvenation project, a nearly 3-kilometer-long walking track would be built around the lake, along with pathways, mini-parks, trees, seating arrangements, and CCTV cameras. They also said the Cherlapally Lake is connected to six chain lakes from Hakimpet and includes a diversion nala to prevent sewage from contaminating its waters. Mishra met with A V Ranganath, Commissioner of HYDRAA, on Tuesday, and showed him videos of the lake situated on the Cherlapally jail premises. Ranganath instructed his team to rejuvenate the lake has promised to visit the lake soon. 'Earlier, Ameenpur Lake was rejuvenated by the Telangana Special Protection Force, which resulted in the return of migratory birds. Similarly, as part of our environmental consciousness, we have been doing a lot of things, and we believe this initiative serves to give back to society,' Mishra told Mishra also stated that the representatives from Cherlapally Industries are ready to provide funds for reviving the lake under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. 'At our open-air prison in Cherlapally, our inmates are already doing a lot. Besides our prisoners who work outside, we can also employ released prisoners along with our staff to develop and upkeep the lake. Once the community gets involved, they will be less likely not defile it. Our inmates will feel useful contributing to society,' the DG added. During the meeting, Mishra lauded HYDRAA's efforts in preserving and restoring the lakes, nalas, and government and public utility lands. Officials from HYDRAA and the Prisons Department also attended the meeting.
