Helen Hunt on why she's rejecting Hollywood beauty standards
Helen Hunt may be Hollywood royalty, but she's no beauty queen.
The Oscar-winning actress, 61, opened up about the inner turmoil she's experienced in the entertainment industry due to Hollywood's intense beauty standards in a June cover story for Flow Space.
Hunt, best known for her roles in the sitcom "Mad About You" and acclaimed dramas "As Good as It Gets" and "Twister," rose to fame in the 1990s when celebrity tabloids routinely scrutinized stars' physical appearance.
"It felt impossible not to internalize the way you're supposed to look," Hunt reflected. "And (there was) a certain amount of misery and shame around not looking exactly that way."
While Hunt rarely discusses the image pressures of being in Hollywood, she said she eventually reached a turning point. "I realized, 'This could quietly ruin your whole life.' I made a decision: I'm not playing. Not going to (let it) take up a lot of space in my mind," she said.
Hunt added that the self-help book "The Only Diet There Is" by Sondra Ray was helpful in shifting her perspective on food and body image. "What I took from it is eat what you want and love every bite, period," she said.

The Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress isn't the only female veteran to get candid on rejecting beauty standards. "Baywatch" alum Pamela Anderson and actress Justine Bateman have spoken out about embracing aging and stepping out in makeup-free looks.
In a 2023 interview with "60 Minutes Australia," Bateman, who'd become the subject of online commentary over her "old" looks, defended her aged appearance and said cosmetic procedures "would erase" the authority she's gained over the years.
"I like feeling that I am a different person now than I was when I was 20," Bateman said at the time. "I like looking in the mirror and seeing that evidence. ... I think my face represents who I am. I like it.'

Manning later interrupted his entrance, jumping on top of him. That entrance helped Brady earn 399.1 total points in the Fanatics Games. Manning was also one of the athletes who participated, finishing in fifth with 314.5 total points as Brady was able to get some revenge over the quarterback who defeated him in two Super Bowls. Brady, a FOX Sports employee, collected his $1 million prize at the Javits Center on Sunday. However, he awarded $5,000 to each of the 50 fans who participated in the Fanatics Games, while the rest of that money will go to charity. Brady's participation in the Fanatics Games was just one of the few viral moments he had from Fanatics Fest over the weekend. On Friday, he struggled to pick out the real Rob Gronkowski in a group of 20 people dressed like his former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers teammate. On Saturday, Brady joined LeBron James, Victor Wembanyama, streamer Kai Cenat and Maverick Carter for a live taping of "The Shop." "He's always done things the right way. He's always risen above all the noise and BS and continued to deliver," Brady said of James as he sat next to the Los Angeles Lakers star. "So you're witnessing the greatest ever, and I hope you guys will appreciate that." As for the other participants in the Fanatics Games, UFC fighter Justin Gaethje finished in second with 345.5 points. He won a a Ferrari 812 GTS for his performance. Matt Dennish, a 39-year-old teacher from Pennsylvania, finished with 326 points to place third in the competition. He outscored athletes such as James Harden, Tyreek Hill, Dwight Howard, Gronkowski, Michael Chandler and Micah Parsons, who all finished in the top 20 of the athletes who competed in the event. Harden dressed as Hulk Hogan for his WWE entrance. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was also among the athletes who participated, struggling in the pitching accuracy competition. He finished 36th in the competition. Jacksonville Jaguars two-way star Travis Hunter had the worst showing among the athletes who competed at the event, while new Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant finished with the second-worst mark. To some, Johnny Depp's headline-making defamation trial with ex-wife Amber Heard was a stain on his gleaming Hollywood career. But despite the legal drama, Depp wouldn't change a thing. The Oscar-nominated actor reflected on the 2022 court battle in an interview with The Sunday Times published June 21.
