Let me start with a cliché: Not long ago, we lived in a very different world.
When shipping goods, we had no idea exactly which route the driver would take or how long the trip would last. If a delivery was delayed, the only way to get answers was a dispatcher's call to the driver—assuming, of course, there was network coverage in the area. And when it came to managing drivers, trust—simple, blind trust—was often the only system in place.
But then came GPS tracking.
Having worked in the fleet management industry for over 15 years, I can say that GPS tracking didn't just change how fleets operate—it redefined the very meaning of fleet management. It was the long-awaited breakthrough that made some operations visible, measurable and—perhaps for the first time—digital.
Taxi businesses and food delivery services were among the first to adopt GPS tracking (and, in my view, they're still leading the way when it comes to embracing new telematics technologies). Then, other businesses followed—ones where knowing the location of assets also made a difference: logistics providers, security companies, construction firms, vehicle rental services, farms and many others.
Soon enough, it became clear that nearly everything could be, and was, tracked. And surprisingly, we didn't mind.
GPS trackers became increasingly accurate, while GPS monitoring systems grew more capable and multifunctional. Technology evolved in step with market demand, and the market wanted it all: reliable hardware, deeper visibility into fleets and drivers, flexible configuration and instant cost savings.
One by one, fleet management system developers started providing a wide range of powerful solutions for businesses: driver behavior monitoring, fuel and maintenance management, video telematics and more. These tools enabled the digitization of key operations and began delivering real results—including improved driving behavior, reduced fuel consumption, theft prevention and, ultimately, optimized operating costs.
As one of those software providers, we told businesses: 'We want you to cut costs and grow—just start using new technologies.'
But not every business was ready to take that step.
As the systems became more advanced, so did the cost and complexity of implementation. With that came something few businesses welcome: a delayed return on investment and more time required to integrate new tools.
First of all, there's a natural reluctance to invest in technology when the return isn't immediate. Fuel sensors and dashcams obviously aren't free, and neither is the development of advanced software features. The fear that the investment might not pay off makes some fleet owners pause.
The second reason is time. It does take time to understand and start using new features. Telematics and fleet management service providers aim to fill this gap, acting as both the head and hands of business transformation. But not all providers emphasize the true business value of advanced features—many still focus primarily on basic GPS tracking. And not all tailor their solutions to the specific needs of each business.
To address the financial concern, proven, relatable case studies that clearly demonstrate the impact of new technologies tend to work well, especially when the example comes from a similar business in the same region.
We hear that fleet managers are saying, 'I want the same,' which is a great sign.
To help service providers become more targeted and relevant to different industry needs, the most effective approach includes ongoing education on advanced features, hands-on support during the first implementation and encouragement to think beyond standard offerings.
It's a gradual process, but in many cases, it's already producing positive results.
Despite the slow but steady adoption of new technologies across the industry, a significant—and growing—gap remains between tech-forward companies that have embraced innovation and those still hesitant to move beyond basic GPS tracking.
The frontrunners have a powerful advantage: data. By making the most of their fleet management systems, they start accumulating valuable data about their vehicles, personnel and operations—insights that are nearly impossible to capture manually.
Armed with this information, these companies can spot patterns, identify seasonal trends, make accurate forecasts and scale their business with confidence. For them, data isn't just a resource—it's a strategic engine powering smarter decisions and long-term growth.
'Can our business boost productivity without adding headcount?'
'How much can I save by servicing vehicles preventively instead of waiting for a breakdown?'
'What does equipment downtime really cost—and what's the profit potential of avoiding it?'
These are the questions data-driven fleets are equipped to answer—and act on. Meanwhile, businesses that remain on the sidelines risk falling further behind, missing out on the efficiency, agility and foresight that only data-backed strategies can deliver.
So, here's what I wanted to highlight: We've already come a long way from blind trust.
At first, it was about simply knowing where our vehicles were. Now, we have the opportunity to understand how the entire fleet operates—and more importantly, how it can operate better.
The tools are here. The data is available.
And yes, I'll say it again: 'We want you to cut costs and grow—just start using new technologies.' And hopefully, you want the same.

Irregular schedules, varied methods and shifting locations disrupt the ability of bad actors to exploit standard operating procedures. This principle is gaining traction in the retail and logistics sectors, where organized theft and freight crime thrive on predictable patterns and weak oversight. Introducing irregular frequencies, varying patterns and differing locations increases uncertainty for bad actors. Advances in stealthy track-and-trace procedures can also improve deterrence. Consider how unpredictability is applied in cybersecurity, where patterns and anomalies are the defining elements that distinguish the ordinary from the suspicious. It's not just about behavior being different; it's about being consistent. When a behavior deviates predictably but consistently, it still falls within the norm. A network of 1,000 users may interact with a system in various ways, but as long as those interactions are stable and predictable—even if unique—there's nothing inherently concerning. However, when a user's activity shifts suddenly or unpredictably—when it steps outside the bounds of consistent, average behavior—that's when alerts should go off. This principle drives cybersecurity anomaly detection systems. Stability signals safety, and true unpredictability triggers concern. Imagine this scenario in a login system. If you log in consistently from your phone while at home or from the office on specific days, the system recognizes that as your 'regular exception.' But, if at 11 p.m. on a Saturday you suddenly attempt to log in from downtown New York City, that's an anomaly, and security protocols should prompt multiple verifications. Uncovering Anomalies To Mitigate Freight Theft Understanding 'normal' versus 'anomalous' behavior should be extended into the fight against freight theft and organized retail crime (ORC), which thrive on gaps in oversight. By being unpredictable, businesses can create smarter, more proactive solutions to detect, deter and respond to increasingly sophisticated criminal activities. Retailers need to consider, for example, the routes and geolocations within their supply chain networks. Much like city navigation, supply chains should account for planned detours, such as those due to roadwork, weather or traffic alerts. These are acceptable anomalies—the system 'knows' or 'expects" them based on traffic application feedback in real time. Now let's add in the unexpected. If a delivery route suddenly deviates to an unplanned location—a suspicious 'pit stop' known to be associated with ORC activities—that anomaly should trigger an alert. How? One way to do this is to leverage real-time location services on cargo pallets, cases or packages, but the key is not just tracking movement but understanding when something abnormal is occurring. Overcoming Criminal Evasion Tactics ORC and other bad actors are becoming smarter. They use detection tools—sometimes specialized devices akin to Geiger counters—to scan for active GPS signals. To combat this, retailers must deploy solutions that embrace unpredictability as a feature, not a flaw. Sensing capabilities and tracking systems should also be designed with the capability to operate in stealth mode. Keeping a signal silent and undetectable while cargo is stationary and activating only when movement occurs serves two purposes: 1. It extends battery life and conserves power, ensuring devices remain operational for longer durations. 2. It reduces detectable signals, making the devices less vulnerable to bad actors attempting to engage in freight theft. Building Partnerships For Deterrence When aggregated, these solutions can provide businesses with accurate, time-stamped data to pass on to law enforcement agencies like the FBI. Real-time anomaly detection and irrefutable evidence form the backbone of successful raids, arrests and prosecutions against ORC networks. The next frontier in combating freight theft involves collaboration between technology providers, specialized ORC deterrence companies and local police and the FBI. These organizations focus on tracking known offenders and building actionable intelligence to target criminal operations. Deterrence specialists aggregate data on known actors—individuals or networks—and their patterns of behavior. By combining this intelligence with route tracking, businesses can triangulate threats, identify anomalies and trigger interventions in real time. Detection, intervention and deterrence all play integral roles in combatting freight theft and other ORC strategies. Retailers must send a strong, unwavering message: Theft will not be tolerated. Through the integration of unpredictability, real-time visibility, stealth capabilities and partnerships with deterrence experts, retailers have a path forward to not only mitigate the financial impact of ORC but to dismantle its operational foundations. You've probably heard about AI impacting parts of the supply chain, like in a warehouse where AI-driven robots work alongside humans, or the last mile, where AI helps efficiently route packages to your front door. But how about the first mile in the supply chain? When that container ship from Shanghai reaches Long Beach harbor, someone needs to move your package from ship to shore to the sorting facility. This crucial handoff happens in the world of 'drayage'—where trucking companies navigate ports and rail yards, connecting international shipping to domestic distribution. Drayage has a reputation of being an old-school, traditional industry that relies on phone calls and spreadsheets instead of the latest shiny technology. My opinion? It's an unfair stereotype that's becoming less and less true. I see the technological transformation firsthand at my company, PortPro. Many companies are adopting AI with enthusiasm as they see how much more efficient it can make their operations and how it can save them money in this low-margin industry. AI has arrived in the supply chain—in the first mile, the last mile, and everything in between—and it's making supply chain operators work smarter instead of harder. A lot of time-consuming work can clog up drayage operations and teams. Before AI, planning, routing, and dispatching had to be done manually. Truth be told, there's no time to waste in this chaotic segment, which actually makes it the perfect industry to embrace AI. Take the example of dispatching. There are so many variables in the process, like which load should move when, and which driver should haul which freight. Manually assessing all of those is a time-consuming process. This is where AI comes in. It can automatically suggest how to match drivers to shipments, cutting down hours of manual work. We see drayage carriers using AI to monitor when containers are arriving at the port, which triggers an automatic notification to truck dispatchers letting them know the load is ready. No need for a human to constantly monitor the schedule (trust me, it's almost as dull as watching paint dry!). Agentic AI, which thinks, learns, and takes action just like a human, is particularly useful in drayage. All of our customers use a transportation management system to house their data related to trucks, drivers, invoices, customers, and much more, so AI uses that context and makes suggestions, answers questions, or makes decisions based on that data. Plus, drayage firms are using AI agents to automate common tasks like automatically updating spreadsheets, something they traditionally do manually that takes them hours and hours. It's all about efficiency and accuracy in this fast-paced industry. Drayage companies also get flooded with customer emails, which could take hours of manual labor to respond to. Now, with AI-enabled tools, these companies can automatically index and filter emails by associating an email with a specific load or quote, customer request, organization, person, or other related information. It can also summarize long email threads, automate quoting, recommend actions to take, automate key data entry, and, over time, learn to improve and better anticipate needs for even more efficiency and automation. Perhaps most importantly, AI frees up brain power among supply chain leaders. Instead of feeling drained at the end of the day after manually sifting through and categorizing emails, they can redirect their efforts to a task that feels empowering, rewarding, and energizing: growing the business. GETTING THE MOST OUT OF AI How can supply chain leaders maximize the benefits of AI they're starting to incorporate? AI's capabilities are immense, but it's about more than just adopting the tool and being done with it. AI works best when it can rely on high-quality, real-time data. The more supply chain execs update their systems with current information, the more the AI can digest that data to improve supply chain operations. If leaders started with one use case—let's say last-mile logistics—they can expand AI across other related supply chain departments, like procurement or warehousing. Employees are an important piece of the puzzle, too. Train them on how to work with AI, using the tech for mundane tasks while freeing themselves to work on the strategic functions that matter most. This is how AI enables us as people to work smarter and not harder. AI: A CHAIN REACTION By July of last year, 78% of respondents in a McKinsey study said their organizations use AI in at least one business function, up from 72% in early 2024 and 55% the year before. Drayage trucking companies are not willing to fall behind and be part of the minority showing hesitation toward AI. In an industry like supply chain where everything is linked, efficiency (or lack thereof) in one part of the supply chain ripples to the next. The chain is only as strong as its weakest link. That's one of the reasons it's so fascinating to see AI improve efficiency in the first mile. If we can shave minutes off a process early on in the supply chain, like booking an appointment to get a container or instantly assigning a driver to a load, those minutes can compound and save hours as the product moves through the supply chain. It might even inspire other links in the supply chain to explore how they can adopt AI to solve their unique inefficiencies and bottlenecks. In a supply chain that embraces AI, goods spend less time sitting around. Data and movements are more accurate and less prone to error. The supply chain as a whole becomes smarter, more efficient, and more accurate—and the people behind it are working smarter, not harder.
