Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of former President Pranab Mukherjee, on Wednesday slammed the Congress party for a satirical social media post targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Centre's new AC temperature proposal.
The Congress shared a meme on X, showing PM Modi holding a remote control—possibly for a teleprompter—pointed towards a screen. The post was captioned, ' Ghar mein ghus ke temperature set karoonga!" (I will enter your home and set the temperature). This was a satirical twist on Prime Minister's well-known line, ' Ghar mein ghus ke marenge."
The Congress's joke was aimed at the central government's recent proposal on air conditioner (AC) temperature, which will encourage citizens to keep their air conditioners set between 24°C and 25°C to help reduce energy consumption during peak summer months. This recommendation comes as several parts of India face record-breaking heatwaves, with temperatures in Delhi and other regions crossing 45°C.
Mukherjee, however, did not find the meme appropriate. She responded to the post, calling it elitist and insensitive, especially when a majority of Indians do not own air conditioners.
In her reply to the Congress' post, she wrote: 'Not an issue of personal choice but of environment & energy concerns. Other countries 've done it & rightly so! ONE CAN VERY WELL SURVIVE BETWEEN 20-28 degrees. Majority of India don't have ACs."

Mukherjee, who stepped away from active politics in 2019 and was formerly with the Congress, urged her former party not to be so elitist. 'Being a national party, stop being so elitist. Don't oppose 4 sake of opposition," she added.
Mukherjee's remarks come at a time when several parts of the country are reeling under an intense heatwave. The national capital has also been sweltering, with temperatures soaring past 45 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of severe heat conditions and has issued red alerts across multiple states.

Bengaluru/Raichur: Law minister HK Patil has written a detailed letter to chief minister Siddaramaiah expressing deep concern over the govt's failure to act on thousands of illegal mining cases that allegedly led to a loss of Rs 1.5 lakh crore between 2007 and 2011. In a seven-page letter dated June 18, Patil criticised the "administrative apathy" in handling these cases and called for stern action against the culprits and recovery of lost public wealth. He reminded Siddaramaiah of the 320-km foot march to Ballari in 2010 against illegal mining when the Congress was in opposition. Patil, who headed the cabinet sub-committee on illegal mining during Siddaramaiah's previous term (2013–18), noted in the letter that only 7.6% of more than 12,000 registered illegal mining cases have been investigated so far. "In just 2 per cent of these seven per cent, which means in only 0.2 per cent of the total number of cases, verdicts have come and cases have seen a conclusion," he further added. In Raichur, Patil on Saturday said, "I have brought it to the notice of the CM about what has to be done. The letter is written in the interest of the state and its people. The chief minister has seen the letter and has taken the matter seriously." Rs 8,000 crore plan in works to clean Yamuna, fix drainage: Delhi CM

The Delhi government is currently working on more than 300 projects, allocated an outlay of Rs 8,000 crore, to clean Yamuna River and solve the city's sewage woes, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Friday. Gupta held a meeting with Water Minister Parvesh Verma and top Delhi Jal Board (DJB) officials to review the work underway to fix the drainage and sewer system in the city. "The Delhi government is implementing a multi-pronged and phased plan for Yamuna rejuvenation, which includes drain treatment, sewerage network expansion and setting up of modern Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs)," the chief minister said in a statement. In the meeting, according to the statement, she reviewed a 45-point action plan, which included capacity enhancement and upgradation work at existing STPs located in Yamuna Vihar, Okhla, Keshopur, Vasant Kunj, Ghitorni, Mehrauli, and Molarbandh under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme and one each in Nilothi and Pappan Kalan. Gupta directed officials to replace old pipelines in phases. "Many parts of Delhi are still operating on decades-old water and sewer pipelines, which are no longer sustainable due to rapid urban growth and increasing demand. Officials have been instructed to undertake phase-wise planning and use modern technology to replace old infrastructure," she said. According to officials, the 303 drainage projects involve redevelopment of major drains, permanent solutions for waterlogging, installation of modern pumps, de-silting of drains, expansion of stormwater systems, and scientific drainage network management. Gupta said she will personally visit the Yamuna every month to check the progress in its cleaning. She also claimed that Delhi will soon become a 'model' city in terms of equitable water distribution under the Centre's Har Ghar Nal Se Jal initiative. Verma stated that strict directions have been issued for immediate action against the illegal discharge of untreated sewage and industrial waste in the city. "This is a crisis that can no longer be ignored. Delhi cannot afford to let untreated sewage flow into its lifelines. No polluter will be spared. We will act and act fast," he said.
