Max Strus' sad group text blows up after stunning Cavaliers elimination

New York Post14-05-2025

Cavaliers wing Max Strus showed up physically, but that's about it.
Facing the daunting task of being down 3-1 to the Pacers in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals, the Cavaliers needed a miracle, which never came as they were eliminated in Game 5, 114-105.
Strus attempted to rally the team ahead of the elimination game, sending a group text to his teammates saying, 'If you don't believe, don't show up for work.'

The reserve wing then followed that up by going a putrid 0-for-9 from the field and scoring zero points while adding seven rebounds and two assists.
The story was told live on the TNT telecast before Game 5 by reporter Jared Greenberg.

'A group text message was sent out to every single Cavalier player,' Greenberg said before reading the message, later adding that Strus did not believe the Cavaliers were done.
The usually reliable sharpshooter had played well in the series from an offensive perspective, scoring 12.2 points per game, and entered Game 5 shooting 40 percent from 3-point range, the second-best figure on the team.
Strus will now be watching the rest of the playoffs from home as the Pacers move on to face the winner of the Knicks vs. Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Cleveland now heads into the offseason wondering what went wrong as the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.
The series took a stunning turn when the Cavaliers blew a seven-point lead in the final 48 seconds of Game 2, sending them into a 2-0 deficit they were unable to fight back from.

New York Knicks Make Clear Kevin Durant Trade Decision

New York Knicks Make Clear Kevin Durant Trade Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Knicks head into the offseason with relative uncertainty, despite having one of their best seasons in recent memory. For the first time in 25 years, the Knicks advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals and were even favored to make the NBA Finals after defeating their rival and the defending champion Boston Celtics. Advertisement Instead, it was just another chapter in their iconic rivalry against the Indiana Pacers. Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton hit an iconic shot where the ball hit the back of the rim, bounced straight into the air, and came down for what he thought was the game-winning shot, and he replicated Reggie Miller's choke sign to the stunned Madison Square Garden crowd. Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant drives to the hoop past Orlando Magic forward Jonathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images New York Knicks make clear Kevin Durant trade decision One name that has repeatedly surfaced as a Knicks possibility is Kevin Durant. The Suns are likely looking to trade him after their calamity of a season in which they missed the playoffs despite having the highest payroll in the history of the NBA. Advertisement However, according to Marc Stein, the Knicks are out on Durant, despite the Knicks being one of his preferred destinations. "New York made it clear that it's decided against pursuing a trade for him," Stein wrote. The Knicks were quick to make changes, as they fired head coach Tom Thibodeau just days following their elimination. If the Knicks were willing to cut ties with their head coach of five years after leading them to their most successful season in a quarter of a century, it's possible more moves could be coming. While it may not be for Durant, as Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby are capable at the position, the Knicks could look to make one more move, perhaps for a role player to help put them over the top and not rely on their starters as much. Rick Carlisle had cryptic reaction to video of Thunder's championship buses before Game 7

The last thing any team facing a winner-take-all championship game wants to do is hand out free bulletin board material. With a title on the line, both squads are already inherently quite motivated to cross the finish line. Anything else, anything at all that could give your opponent the potential mental edge in an already tense competitive environment is a huge no-no. It's effectively a sports cardinal sin. Ahead of Sunday night's Game 7 of the NBA Finals, someone clearly did not pass along this memo to whoever released a video of the Oklahoma City Thunder preparing their official championship buses. The clip features the buses in storage as some finishing touches are put on their decorative sides that read "2025 Champions" in an illustrative font. While there's probably an easy explanation for why the Thunder — who still have to actually win Game 7 — already have these buses prepared, it's still not the best look. That's because it's likely easy to motivate the Indiana Pacers' players by showing them the finished championship buses in the video and telling them that the Thunder are getting way too presumptuous about their chances of winning the title with an entire heated 48-minute game ahead of both teams. Based on Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle's cryptic reaction to the video at his pregame press conference, that appears to be exactly what he did: Now here's a video of Carlisle's response to the Thunder's buses: Of course, there's a simple explanation for this entire situation: it's completely normal. In fact, for two teams on the brink of winning it all like the Thunder and Pacers, it would be irresponsible for their respective organizations and cities not to start preparing championship vehicles, equipment and gear, and where, say, they'll have their potential parade routes. It's basic due diligence started way in advance, which allows the winner to jump straight into their festivities without having to wait for anything in production behind the scenes. I assure you that this happens in all major sports without fail. I mean, heck, even downtown Indianapolis has apparently already started lining its streets with port-o-potties: But there's a crucial rub here: the cat is out of the bag. And you can't put it back in. As first-time NBA Finals participants, the Pacers' players do not necessarily know this sort of practice is the norm. So, regardless of the additional context to clarify what should be a non-controversy, they are likely under the impression that the Thunder organization is getting ahead of itself by overlooking the Pacers while preparing its championship celebration. In fact, I would safely venture to guess that Carlisle and his coaching staff have already made it clear to their players that this situation isn't normal while ensuring they consume none of this clarifying information now being shared online as they warm up for Game 7. Why wouldn't Carlisle take this perfect motivational lob and run with it? It is practically a head coach's dream to be gifted seemingly compromising something like this right before a climactic championship bout. No one said withholding context is against the rules. It's on whoever released the video to ensure it isn't made public in the first place. The damage is done. The Thunder just have to hope this bus snafu doesn't come back to bite them in the butt.
