Govt. working to clear 85 lakh tonnes of legacy garbage in State, says Municipal Administration Minister Narayana

The Hindu15-06-2025

Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) P. Narayana has reiterated that 85 lakh tonnes of garbage in the State will be cleared in 365 days.
'Nearly 45 lakh tonnes of garbage has been cleared so far, and another 35 lakh tonnes will be cleared in the next three months,' Mr. Narayana said on Saturday.
The Minister was speaking after inspecting the Ramapuram dump in Tirupati. AP Greening and Beautification Corporation (APG&BC) Chairman M. Sugunamma, Yadav Corporation Chairman Narasimha Yadav and municipal officials were present.
Mr. Narayana said the department was committed to providing minimum facilities to the people. He said that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was a visionary leader. He had constituted the Swachh Andhra Corporation in 2014-19. Many programmes had been implemented under the Swachh Andhra programme. Equipment was also given to the municipalities, but the previous YSRCP government had put them aside, he alleged.
He further said that the previous government had left a legacy garbage of 85 lakh tonnes and a debt burden of ₹10 lakh crore. 'Mr. Naidu had on October 2, 2024, announced that the entire garbage would be cleared in one year. To achieve the target, several meetings and cleanliness drives have been held. Many companies have come forward to clear the garbage,' the Minister said.
In Tirupati, a company called Zigma came forward to clear 900 tonnes of legacy garbage per day, he said. 'The municipalities are clearing 2,700 tonnes per day, which is less than the quantity they need to clear daily. As there is no power connection, the company is working on a generator to clear the waste,' Mr. Narayana said.

Lokesh pats minister Narayana for his efforts in reviving the 150-year-old VR school at Nellore

Tirupati: HRD minister Nara Lokesh appreciated the efforts put in by municipal administration minister Ponguru Narayana in reviving the 150-year-old VR school at Nellore, where Narayana not only studied but also began his teaching career as a part-time teacher. The VR school, which has a rich legacy, had almost become defunct and was shut down during the erstwhile YSRCP regime. In the run-up to the 2024 general elections, Narayana promised to the people of Nellore that the VR school will be revived immediately after the TDP-led NDA govt comes back to power in the state. In an effort to fulfil his promise, the municipal administration minister has now revived the VR school with international infrastructure including digital classrooms, state-of-the-art labs and an impressive sports arena with the help of funds to the tune of Rs 15 crore extended under the CSR initiative by the NCC group. With the help of the state municipal administration dept, about 1,000 children from the most underprivileged sections of the society were handpicked and provided admission at the VR school, which is all set to be reopened in the last week of June.

The Chief Secretary further explained that these reviews of local bodies are being undertaken as per the instructions of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. Accompanied by MAUD (Municipal Administration and Urban Development) officials and the Rangareddy District Collector, the Chief Secretary visited Shamshabad Municipality and conducted a review meeting. During the session, the Chief Secretary ascertained information regarding the Municipal Corporation's jurisdiction and population. Furthermore, he reviewed the services being extended by the Municipal Council to its citizens, including water supply, street lighting, drainage networks, and Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). The Chief Secretary stressed the importance of effective property tax collection to finance various activities undertaken by the Urban Local Body (ULB). Following the review meeting, the Chief Secretary visited the Eco Park developed by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) across approximately 85 acres at Kothwalguda, at a cost of Rs 75 crore. He inspected various components of the park, such as boardwalks, the bird aviary, the arrival plaza, and other landscaped facilities. This park is slated to be opened to the public within two months by the Chief Minister, once the finishing works of the arrival plaza are complete. 29 parks developed in Nellore rural with ₹7 crore

The ambitious project taken up by Nellore Rural MLA Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy to develop the dilapidated parks in his constituency goes beyond mere beautification. It aims to retrieve public property worth ₹150 crore from the clutches of land grabbers. The MLA minced no words while announcing his decision to go all the way to bring back the lands to be used for public use. A three-day programme launched by the MLA — 'Chandranna Parkula Bata' — to build compound walls to all the parks as a measure to safeguard them from encroachment in future came to a close on Friday. The MLA launched developmental works in 30th, 37th and 38th divisions of Nellore Municipal Corporation, falling under his constituency limits, by breaking the ground at a public park on Friday. Mr. Reddy expressed satisfaction at the support extended to his initiative by Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development Ponguru Narayana, the MLA of the adjacent Nellore city constituency, as well as the Nellore MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy. Intending to ensure public involvement to his drive, Mr. Sridhar Reddy said that the parks, once developed and beautified, would be handed over to the local communities, who would have to take care of their maintenance and upkeep.
