Over 200 Johor projects worth RM10.8bil remain unimplemented, says MB

JOHOR BARU: More than 200 projects in Johor valued at RM10.8bil and approved under the 11th Malaysia Plan (RMK11) nearly a decade ago have yet to be implemented, says Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
The Johor Mentri Besar said the projects were approved in 2016, but have stalled despite funds already being allocated.
"There are a total of 222 projects worth RM10.8bil that are still in the pre-implementation stage.
The state government views this as a serious matter, as allocations for the projects have been approved, yet the work has not been carried out.
"Imagine the number of development and upgrade projects, including those involving hospitals, schools, and roads, that have not reached the people," he said during the state assembly sitting on Monday (May 26).
Onn Hafiz said he had brought the matter up with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during his recent visit to Johor.
"Every time we have our state action council meeting, I raise this issue and have the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) follow up with the ministries involved.
"With the Prime Minister's approval, the Johor government has decided that all state executive councillors will meet with the ministries involved in the projects.
"This is to ensure the projects are carried out as soon as possible for the benefit of the people," he said.
Onn Hafiz also thanked Anwar for approving nine major projects that would greatly benefit Johoreans.
"We would like to thank the Prime Minister, as out of the 10 projects we requested, nine have been approved under RMK12, Rolling Plan Five.
"This includes the Hospital Sultanah Aminah 2 project and several involving highways," he said, adding that Anwar had chaired the Johor Special Development meeting on Friday (May 23).

Let state govts implement federal projects, Putrajaya told

Onn Hafiz Ghazi urged the federal government to use Johor 'as a pilot project' in carrying out federal development plans. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi has called on the federal government to entrust state governments with implementing federal development projects meant for the people. Onn Hafiz said 222 projects supposed to be implemented in Johor between 2016 and 2024 have got off the ground. He suggested that the federal government empower state governments to carry out the projects, starting with Johor 'as a pilot project'. He said some of the stalled projects included hospitals, health clinics, roads and mosques, for which the total cost amounted to RM10 billion, Berita Harian reported. 'And when we enquire about it in meetings, they tell us, 'don't worry, we will check with the relevant ministries and approve'. These are projects that are meant for the 'rakyat', but till today, work has not started on any of them,' he was quoted as saying. He said it was time for the federal government to entrust the state governments with the task of implementing these projects. Onn Hafiz, who is Johor Umno chief, said his party would bear the brunt when these projects are not realised.

We want Hisham back, says Sembrong Umno

Sembrong MP Hishammuddin Hussein was suspended from Umno for six years in January 2023 for breach of party discipline. PETALING JAYA : Sembrong Umno has proposed that its suspended former division chief, Hishammuddin Hussein, be readmitted to the party leadership. It suggested this at a meeting today officiated by Johor Umno chairman Onn Hafiz Ghazi, who said he will bring the matter up to the party leadership. 'Sembrong is not just a constituency. It was where I learnt how to fight, and the person that brought me here was Hishammuddin,' Utusan Malaysia quoted Onn Hafiz as saying. He said the proposal reflected the grassroots' appreciation of Hishammuddin's leadership. Hishammuddin, the Sembrong MP and former party vice-president, had his Umno membership suspended for six years, or for two terms in the Umno Supreme Council, from January 2023 for breach of party discipline.

New AI-cyber faculty to drive TVET

High-tech boost: Anwar (centre) officiating the ceremony recently. With him are (from left) Zambry, Ahmad Zahid, Ab Rauf and Fadhlina. ARMING students with skills in their respective fields is no longer enough in technical and vocational education and training (TVET). What is increasingly vital is preparing them for the future through training in artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity. That is the mission Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) has undertaken with the recent inauguration of its Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity (FAIX). The launch of the initiative – the latest under the National TVET 2025 agenda – was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the National TVET Day 2025 Opening Ceremony, held at the Melaka International Trade Centre on June 12. UTeM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Massila Kamalrudin said FAIX has been equipped with 13 state-of-the-art laboratories that allow students and researchers to explore advanced technologies in a conducive and competitive environment. 'Some 1,040 local students are expected to form the inaugural intake in October, marking a significant start to the faculty's official operations,' she said in a press release. She added that the university's role is not limited to supporting the latest national TVET agenda through academic, research and innovation efforts in the fields of AI and cybersecurity alone. 'UTeM also serves as a backbone for Malaysia in producing skilled professional talent through technology-based training under a comprehensive and adaptive TVET approach. 'The establishment of FAIX further strengthens the importance of applied AI across various disciplines, including engineering, business, automation, and smart systems. 'This cross-disciplinary approach is key to delivering comprehensive, sustainable and high-value technology solutions to both industry and the nation,' she said. Noting that AI and cybersecurity are essential – and no longer optional – fields in today's digital era, she added that FAIX serves as a national reference centre and a hub for research and innovation in applied AI and cybersecurity, in line with industry needs and the country's aspirations. 'The launch of FAIX marks UTeM's commitment to being a pioneer in developing high-tech TVET talent and in becoming a relevant, responsive and proactive technical higher education institution prepared for the future,' she said. Also present at the National TVET Day 2025 Opening Ceremony were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
