Saudi expands white road project to cool hajj routes

MAKKAH: Saleh Al-Jasser, the Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistics Services and Chairman of the Roads General Authority, launched the cooled pedestrian walkway project in Makkah, which will enhance accessibility services for individuals with disabilities. According to the Roads General Authority, the cooled roads initiative has expanded by 82 percent, building on its initial success since its launch in 2023.
More than 84,000 sq m of roads in Arafat have now been paved using locally sourced recycled materials designed to reduce heat absorption from sunlight. These materials lower surface temperatures by approximately 12°C and reflect 30–40 percent more sunlight during the morning hours, helping to mitigate urban heat islands and providing a more comfortable environment for pilgrims while reducing energy consumption and air pollution.
Furthermore, the growth of flexible rubber roads increased by 33 percent. These surfaces aim to soften asphalt in pedestrian areas, offering particular advantages to older adults. The newly laid section extends from Namira Mosque to Arafat Train Station, raising the overall flexible pavement area to
16,000 sq m. Research conducted by the Road Research Centre has validated the improved comfort and safety of this advanced rubberized asphalt.
The new initiatives feature a green corridor project along the adaptable route, featuring trees planted over 1,200 meters from Namira Mosque to the train station. To enhance air quality and comfort for pilgrims, air-cooling mist systems and water fountains have been installed in collaboration with the Abdulrahman Fakieh Charitable Foundation.
Furthermore, the minister has introduced an accessibility initiative aimed at supporting individuals with disabilities. This initiative features a 4,000-metre pedestrian path that leads to Mount Arafat, built with cooled paving materials designed to minimize vibrations and enhance mobility for users and their companions. The Roads General Authority, the national regulator of Saudi Arabia's Road sector, aims to elevate the quality of roads to rank sixth globally by 2030 and reduce road fatalities to fewer than five per 100,000 people. Saudi Arabia currently boasts the world's leading intercity road connectivity, with a total network exceeding 73,000 km. – AFP

Saudi companies order 65 aircraft at Paris Air Show

Boeing focuses on 'supporting customers', not orders LE BOURGET: European plane maker Airbus announced Monday orders for 65 aircraft from two Saudi companies, in the first major deals at this year's Paris Air Show. Riyadh Air, an airline founded in 2023, placed a 'firm' order for 25 wide-body, long-range A350-1000 aircraft. The deal would be worth more than $9 billion under 2018 catalogue prices — which Airbus has since phased out as final sale prices vary according to contract terms and version of aircraft. The Riyadh Air deal could rise to 50 planes, Airbus said. Saudi aircraft leasing company AviLease placed a separate order for 30 single-aisle A320neo jets and 10 A350F freighters in a deal worth several billion dollars. While Airbus announced deals at the opening of the air show at Le Bourget, its US rival Boeing was focusing on the investigation of last week's crash of a Dreamliner operated by Air India. 'Our focus is on supporting our customers, rather than announcing orders at this air show,' a Boeing spokeswoman told AFP at the trade fair outside Paris. Boeing chief executive Kelly Ortberg said last week he was cancelling plans to attend the biennial event to focus on the probe. 'Supporting customers' US group Boeing said Monday it would focus on supporting its customers at the Paris Air Show instead of the traditional announcements of plane orders, in the aftermath of Air India's 787 Dreamliner crash. The sales rivalry between Boeing and European aerospace giant Airbus usually drives the headlines as the world's top civilian planemakers announce many of their biggest orders at the air show in Le Bourget. But Boeing chief executive Kelly Ortberg said last week he was cancelling plans to attend the biennial event to focus on the investigation of the Air India crash. 'Our focus is on supporting our customers, rather than announcing orders at this air show,' a Boeing spokeswoman told AFP at the trade fair outside Paris. The London-bound Dreamliner crashed shortly after take off in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, killing 241 passengers and crew and another 38 on the ground. One passenger survived. The decision added drama to the major aerospace industry event, which was already being held under the shadow of last week's deadly crash of Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Black walls were installed around the stands of five Zionist defense firms at the trade fair in Le Bourget, an airfield on the outskirts of Paris. The booths displayed 'offensive weapons' that could be used in Gaza — in violation of agreements with Zionist authorities, a French government source told AFP. The companies — (Zionist) Aerospace Industries (IAI), Rafael Uvision, Elbit and Aeronautics — make drones and guided bombs and missiles. A Zionist exhibitor wrote a message in yellow chalk on one of the walls, saying the hidden defense systems 'are protecting (the Zionist) state these days. The French government, in the name of discrimination is trying to hide them from you!' President Isaac Herzog said he was shocked by the 'outrageous' closure of the pavilions and said the situation should be 'immediately corrected'. '(Zionist) companies have signed contracts with the organizers... it's like creating a (Zionist) ghetto,' he said on French television channel LCI. The Zionist defense ministry said in a statement that the 'outrageous and unprecedented decision reeks of policy-driven and commercial considerations'. 'The French are hiding behind supposedly political considerations to exclude Zionist offensive weapons from an international exhibition — weapons that compete with French industries,' it said. 'This is particularly striking given Zionist technologies' impressive and precise performance in Iran.' Zionists launched surprise strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites on Friday, killing top commanders and scientists, prompting Tehran to hit back with a barrage of missiles. The presence of Zionist firms at Le Bourget, though smaller than in the past, was already a source of tension before the start of the Paris Air Show, because of the conflict in Gaza. A French court last week rejected a bid by NGOs to ban Zionist companies from Le Bourget over concerns about 'international crimes'. Local lawmakers from the Seine-Saint-Denis department hosting the event were absent during French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou's visit to the opening of the air show in protest over the Zionist presence. 'Never has the world been so disrupted and destabilized,' Bayrou said at a roundtable event, urging nations to tackle challenges 'together, not against each other'. — AFP

First Group of Kuwaiti Pilgrims Returns After Smooth, Well-Organized Hajj

KUWAIT CITY, June 8: The first group of Kuwaiti pilgrims returning from this year's Hajj arrived this afternoon at Terminal 1 of Kuwait International Airport, with additional flights expected to follow in the coming hours. The pilgrims unanimously described this year's pilgrimage as exceptionally well-organized. They praised the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its comprehensive preparations, including the deployment of teams and field units across the holy sites to swiftly respond to any emergencies. Hajj Abdul Karim Al-Lamie, one of the earliest returnees, expressed gratitude for the smooth and organized experience. 'Thanks to God and the Saudi authorities, everything was made easy. The procedures were clear and efficient, and the entire journey went smoothly,' he said. Echoing this sentiment, Hajj Abdul Razzaq Al-Bassam called this year's pilgrimage 'special and different,' emphasizing the visible improvements in organization and accessibility at every site. 'We felt comfort and ease throughout the rituals. The Saudi procedures were exceptional, and the Kuwaiti Hajj mission supported us every step of the way.' Abu Al-Qasim Al-Dibaji, Secretary-General of the International Organization for Islamic Fiqh and Imam of Zain Al-Abidin Mosque in Salmiya, noted that his experience this year stood out among the more than twenty times he has performed the pilgrimage. 'This was the most seamless Hajj I've experienced. The services, especially those provided by the Kuwaiti Hajj campaigns, were outstanding,' he said, adding that Kuwaiti pilgrims continue to serve as role models for ethical conduct and religious observance. Dr. Faisal Al-Enezi also confirmed the positive experience, citing excellent coordination and a lack of congestion. 'Everything was organized to perfection, and we are truly grateful to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its efforts,' he said. 'May God reward them for all they have done.'

Pilgrims gather at Mount Arafat for Hajj's most significant ritual

MAKKAH: Pilgrims performing Hajj have begun gathering at Mount Arafat, marking the most significant ritual of the annual Islamic movement to the Arafat plain started early Thursday, as pilgrims arrived in a deeply spiritual atmosphere marked by humility, prayer, and supplication, seeking forgiveness, mercy, and salvation. Saudi authorities provided direct and comprehensive security oversight as pilgrims made their way to Arafat, with personnel from various security sectors deployed along roads and pedestrian paths to ensure orderly movement in line with pre-established crowd management plans. All relevant Saudi government agencies involved in serving the pilgrims operated at full capacity, providing medical, emergency, food, and logistical services across Arafat. The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported smooth and organized movement of pilgrims from Mina to Arafat. Pilgrims are expected to perform the combined and shortened Dhuhr and Asr prayers at Al-Namirah Mosque in Arafat, in accordance with the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad. At sunset, pilgrims will begin their journey to Muzdalifah, where they will perform the Maghrib and Isha prayers and spend the night, following the example of the Prophet. - KUNA
