PORTLAND (Oregon), June 18 (Bernama-dpa) -- Amazon's management said on Tuesday that it expects that artificial intelligence (AI) software will reduce the number of office workers at the world's largest online retailer, German news agency (dpa) reported.
"We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs," Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy wrote in an email to employees.
He said it is difficult to predict how the overall workforce will evolve, but "in the next few years", it is expected that AI efficiency gains will lead to fewer office workers.

Amazon employs around 1.5 million people worldwide, with approximately 350,000 office employees in various roles, according to earlier reports.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the company does not anticipate further large-scale layoffs - as were seen in 2022 and 2023 - in the near future. Instead, it expects that vacant positions will not be refilled. However, layoffs are not ruled out, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Amazon is focusing on so-called AI agents: software capable of independently performing tasks. These agents could, for example, summarise information from the web and data sources, write software, translate languages and automate many time-consuming tasks, Jassy explained.
"Agents will be teammates that we can call on at various stages of our work," he added, urging employees to experiment with AI whenever possible.
How AI will affect the job market has been a concern for many years. Recently, Spotify, the leader in music streaming, announced that teams requesting additional staff would first need to prove that AI could not perform the tasks.
The creators of the language-learning app Duolingo plan to gradually replace external workers with AI.

Gulf states prepare for possible Iran attack after US strikes

DUBAI/ RIYADH: Gulf states, home to multiple United States' military bases, were on high alert on Sunday after US strikes on Iran raised the possibility of a widening conflict in the region. US forces "obliterated" Iran's main nuclear sites with massive bunker-busting bombs in the early hours of Sunday in the region, President Donald Trump said, warning Tehran it would face more devastating attacks if it does not agree to peace. Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter, was on a high security alert after the US strikes, two sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Sunday, while Bahrain urged drivers to avoid main roads and Kuwait set up shelters in a ministries complex. Tehran has previously warned that if it was attacked by the United States, it could target American assets in the region, including US military bases. Bahrain is home to the headquarters of the US Navy's 5th Fleet and there are US bases in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, as well as in neighbouring Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Nuclear authorities in Saudi Arabia and the UAE said they had not detected signs of nuclear contamination following the strikes in Iran. "While the war has so far been contained in direct hostilities between Israel and Iran, direct US involvement is a critical threshold that risks dragging the Gulf states, notably Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar, which host large US military facilities, into the conflict," said Hasan Al Hasan, a senior fellow for Middle East Policy at the International Institute for Strategic studies. He said the risk of an open conflict between the US and Iran could plunge the region into a devastating and potentially protracted conflict. "In light of recent developments in the regional security situation, we urge citizens and residents to use main roads only when necessary to maintain public safety and to allow the relevant authorities to use the roads efficiently," Bahrain's interior ministry said in a post on X. Bahrain also told 70 per cent of its government employees to work from home on Sunday until further notice, citing escalating tensions, according the Civil Service Bureau. The country's authorities earlier this week said they had activated a national plan to prepare for emergencies, set up an emergency centre and tested warning sirens. Local media also reported that Bahrain had set up 33 shelters.

U.S. Action In Iran-Israel Conflict Worsens Situation, Undermines Stability

KUCHING, June 22 (Bernama) -- Interference by major powers such as the United States in the Iran-Israel conflict will only worsen the situation and undermine regional stability as well as the global economy, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today. He said the United States' involvement in the conflict could escalate tensions and have a direct impact on key global trade routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. 'Now, with the involvement of external powers, including the United States, the situation will only become more volatile. If the Strait of Hormuz is blocked, it will pose a major problem to the global economy,' he told reporters after a session with the Sarawak Keadilan Leadership Council here.

OCBC Commits RM11 Bln Financing, Another RM3 Bln By End-2025 For JS-SEZ

BUSINESS JOHOR BAHRU, June 22 (Bernama) -- OCBC Group has committed more than RM11 billion into businesses in Johor since early 2024, as part of its commitment to support the development of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). The bank in a statement today said it plans to extend an additional RM3 billion in financing by the end of 2025 to support investments in key sectors such as real estate, oil and gas, manufacturing, and data centres within the JS-SEZ. OCBC chief executive officer (CEO) Helen Wong said the group has a long history in Johor dating more than a century, with OCBC Malaysia's first branch established in Johor in 1917. Today, the group operates eight branches in the state, out of 38 branches across Malaysia, she added. While reiterating the group's long-term support to JS-SEZ, Wong emphasised that OCBC's One Group approach, which brings together the collective strengths of OCBC Bank, Great Eastern Holdings (insurance subsidiary), Bank of Singapore (private banking arm), and leasing and wealth management capabilities, uniquely positions the group to support business growth and cross-border collaboration. The commitment announcement was made during a courtesy visit by Wong along with senior executives of OCBC Group to Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi at his official residence in Saujana here. Welcoming the move, Onn Hafiz described OCBC's commitment as a vote of confidence in Johor's investment climate. 'The Group's commitment of over RM11 billion, with another RM3 billion targeted by year-end, reflects strong private sector support for our economic vision. We look forward to deepening this collaboration,' he said. Meanwhile, OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Bhd CEO Tan Chor Sen said the group had already taken proactive steps to promote the JS-SEZ to global investors, even before the formal agreement was signed in January 2025.
