Patriots had three traits in mind when drafting a new kicker

USA Today10 hours ago

The New England Patriots had three characteristics in mind when they were preparing to select a kicker in the 2025 NFL draft. They wanted consistency, character and the ability to improve.
So they landed on University of Miami kicker Andres Borregales in the sixth round with the 182nd overall pick.
Not only was Borregales one of the most decorated kickers in the program's history, but he was arguably the best kicker in the entire country. He made 86 percent of his field goals and converted 183-of-184 extra point attempts.
His senior year was especially impressive with him making 18-of-19 field goals and converting all 62 of his extra points. He was a member of the All-ACC team in 2023 and 2024, while also being a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award for three consecutive seasons.
'Consistency, right? First and foremost, they've gotta make kicks. He did that throughout his career,' Patriots special teams coach Jeremy Springer said on Borregales, via MassLive's Chris Mason. 'So consistency was No. 1, then just the type of kid he is, the type of character, and then the overall ability. Does he have the ability to get better?'
The only other competition for Borregales on the Patriots' roster is veteran kicker John Parker Romo. It will be an uphill battle for Romo, who got outperformed by Borregales during the spring practices.
The final hurdle standing between the former Miami standout and the starting job in New England is training camp.

NFL Analyst Gushes Over Commanders' Offseason Moves

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Last season, the Washington Commanders found themselves rapidly climbing the ranks in the NFC. Jayden Daniels quickly adapted to the pro level, putting together an impressive rookie campaign. Not only did he lead the Commanders to the postseason, but Washington pulled off multiple upsets en route to appearing in the NFC Championship game. Coming off a successful 2024 campaign, the Commanders wasted no time building on their positive momentum. The front office quickly got to work improving the roster, securing upgrades at various important positions. By far their biggest splash was trading for San Francisco 49ers' wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Also read: Cowboys Star Utters Bold Statement on Commanders' Jayden Daniels A few weeks out from training camp, NFL analyst Bucky Brooks put out a column breaking down the biggest winners from this past offseason. The Commanders received praise for their numerous additions, but he did cite needing to resolve Terry McLaurin's contract holdout. Deebo Samuel Sr. #1 of the San Francisco 49ers in action against the Detroit Lions at Levi's Stadium on December 30, 2024. Deebo Samuel Sr. #1 of the San Francisco 49ers in action against the Detroit Lions at Levi's Stadium on December 30, 2024."It's hard to improve from good to great in the NFL, but the Commanders might join the league's elites with an improved roster that features more blue-chip players around 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels," Brooks wrote. "The trades for Laremy Tunsil and Deebo Samuel place a pair of Pro Bowl-caliber players in marquee positions (left tackle and WR2) that should help the offense unlock another gear in 2025. If the team can resolve Terry McLaurin's contract situation, the Commanders will have a chance to open the season with an electric offense that will put plenty of stress on defensive coordinators crafting plans to stop the juggernaut." Also read: NFL Writer Cites 'Overreaction' to Commanders Star's Holdout Since entering the NFL back in 2016, Tunsil has emerged as one of the top offensive tackles in the league. He spent the past two years protecting CJ Stroud and now will be doing so for another young dynamic quarterback. Samuel is coming off a down year with the 49ers, but that should alter the opinion of him joining the Commanders. He'll be able to provide a new element to Washington's offensive and gives Daniels another weapon at his disposal. In the event McLaurin works things out with the front office, he and Samuel can emerge as one of the top wide receiver duos in the league. With Daniels having a year of experience under his belt and the roster's improvements, the Commanders have a good chance to remain in the hunt in the NFC. Bengals Cut Paves Way for Potential All-Rookie Campaign

Bengals Cut Paves Way for Potential All-Rookie Campaign originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Most of the hubbub this offseason about the Cincinnati Bengals' rookie class has centered on the controversy surrounding first-round pick Shemar Stewart and his contract holdout. Advertisement Stewart, a stout defensive end, was expected to form a fierce pass rush duo with last year's sack leader Trey Hendrickson ... who is also going through a contract dispute. Getting lost in the weeds is Cincy's second-round pick, linebacker Demetrius Knight Jr., who could make just as much impact as any rookie on this year's roster. Knight enters a perfect opportunity to see the field in his first NFL season, which earns him a spot on All-Rookie Team projection. Before the 2025 Draft, the South Carolina product's combine profile featured a player comparison that will sound familiar to Bengals fans: Germaine Pratt. Advertisement Pratt had requested a trade in February after six seasons in Cincinnati. After drafting Knight, Pratt was cut, which paves a nice road for Knight to take and potentially earn a spot in the starting lineup immediately. Cincinnati's other starting linebacker Logan Wilson had some good things to say about the rookie and his potential role this season. "He can do everything at a high level. Just a matter of putting it all together," Wilson said, via the team website. "He's fast, hits, big, shifty. All the things you want in a linebacker, he's got." "He's done a hell of a job for a rookie with how much we've installed and covered," he added. "I'm looking forward to playing next to him." Advertisement Knight has big shoes to fill, as Pratt was the Bengals' leading tackler last season with 143. He'll still have to earn his stripes this summer at training camp, but so far the rook has made a nice impression on his elder teammates. Knight will compete for a starting job with fellow rookie Barrett Carter and free agent signee Oren Burks, who has Super Bowl experience with the Eagles last season. "Those guys are still competing for that," head coach Zac Taylor said about his linebacker unit. "I do think [Knight] has worked really hard. As I come in the building, he's one of the first guys in the locker room every single day," Taylor said. "Very mature. He's ready to go, ready to compete."
