Tributes paid to Slane Castle's Lord Henry Mount Charles, who has died aged 74

He died late on Wednesday after 'a long and valiant' battle with cancer, his family said.
Since 1981, the flamboyant rock fan has hosted a series of open-air concerts at his ancestral home of Slane Castle in Co Meath.
'It is with profound sadness that the family of Lord Henry Mount Charles, the Marquess Conyngham, announce his peaceful passing in the late hours of June 18 following a long and valiant battle with cancer,' his family said in a statement.
'A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and custodian of Slane Castle, Lord Henry's courage and unwavering spirit inspired all who knew him.'
The Slane estate, which acts as a huge natural amphitheatre due to its sloping lands, has played host to several top acts including The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Queen, U2 and Madonna.
The last Slane Festival was in June 2023, when Harry Styles performed for 80,000 fans.
His family said Lord Henry Mount Charles had left behind 'an extraordinary legacy as a passionate steward of Ireland's heritage, dedicating his life to preserving Slane Castle and transforming it into a beacon of culture, music and community'.
'His visionary leadership and generosity touched countless lives, while his warmth, humour and resilience endeared him to friends, colleagues and admirers across generations.

'Lord Henry's light will continue to shine through the lives he enriched and the enduring contributions he made to Ireland's cultural landscape. He will be profoundly missed, but never forgotten.'
His family thanked the 'exceptional' staff at St James's Hospital and the many caregivers who treated him with 'compassion' over the last decade.
They also said they were 'deeply moved' by the 'outpouring of public kindness' during his illness.
The family have asked for privacy and said the funeral arrangements will be private.
President Michael D Higgins has led tributes and expressed condolences to his wife Lady Iona, to his children Alexander, Henrietta, Wolfe and Tamara.
'Lord Henry's contribution was quite unique and a very important turning point in live music in Ireland when he decided to begin using the natural amphitheatre at Slane Castle as a venue at which public performances could be held by some of the most contemporary makers of music,' Mr Higgins said.
'It wasn't just in relation to very well-known events that Henry was involved, he had a deep interest in promotion of music including new and young talent.
'I have been saddened over recent years to hear of his struggles with cancer, about which he spoken personally and helpfully of his experiences.'
Ireland's deputy premier Simon Harris said he would be remembered for his 'unrivalled wit, his ability to light up a room, and his incredible sense of warmth and generosity'.
'For so many, Lord Henry will be remembered as the man who brought rock-and-roll to the iconic music venue that is Slane Castle.
'I want to pay tribute to him for the incredible contribution he made to arts, culture and of course his beloved county Meath.
'My deepest sympathies are today with his family and friends.'

Sabrina Carpenter breaks British icon's album chart record amid controversy

Sabrina Carpenter has left a forever mark on the UK charts, breaking the record for the longest consecutive streak in the top five album chart. Her hit album, Short N' Sweet, has now spent a massive 43 consecutive weeks at the top, according to the Official Charts Company. The 26-year-old singer's achievement officially topples Ed Sheeran from the top spot. Sheeran's 2021 album, =, had a record-setting 42-week stay in the top five, a claim which he managed to hold onto until Sabrina's album came along. Oasis have stormed back into the UK albums chart, climbing to number two with their greatest hits collection Time Flies… 1994–2009, as anticipation builds for their upcoming Oasis Live '25 reunion tour. The Britpop icons, who disbanded in 2009, officially confirmed their return in August 2024. The long-awaited tour kicks off in Cardiff this July, with major shows lined up in Manchester, London, Edinburgh, and Dublin. Topping the UK albums chart for the first time this week is musician James Marriott, whose debut album Don't Tell The Dog takes the number one spot. The news comes just days after Sabrina revealed the cover for her upcoming album Man's Best Friend, which sparked enormous backlash. The image, which depicts Carpenter on her knees, in a short black dress and heels, holding the leg of a suited man as he yanks her hair, is shocking many fans. On Instagram, @edersoaresx wrote, 'Lol this cover art is so disgusting. As a fan I don't like it :(.' Reddit user Potential-Friend-133 said, 'The first image is very triggering for me. I hate this. A LOT.' More Trending Others have argued that the album cover is satirical or even a moment of political commentary. On the singles chart, Alex Warren reclaims the top spot with Ordinary landing at number one, followed by Sabrina Carpenter's latest hit Manchild in second place. Ravyn Lenae's Love Me Not holds steady at number three, while Chappell Roan's Pink Pony Club remains firmly at number four. Got a story? Liam Gallagher 'hunkering down' as son shares huge insight into Oasis reunion

Liam Gallagher's son, Lennon, has shed light on the upcoming Oasis Live '25 reunion tour and hinted that he and his brother, Gene, could join the legendary band on stage Lennon Gallagher shares his thoughts on the Oasis reunion Liam Gallagher's son has shared a major insight into the upcoming Oasis tour. The legendary Manchester-based band will be on stage together for the first time in 16 years next month for their mammoth Oasis Live '25 tour. Brothers Liam, 52, and Noel, 58, had been at loggerheads ever since the band split in 2009 and were often embroiled in tense feuds on social media and in interviews. But last year, things changed when the two brothers joined forces again, announcing their widely anticipated comeback, almost 15 years to the day from their split. ‌ Now, with just weeks to go, any former feuds between the Gallaghers are firmly in the past, and they're looking towards the future. Last night, the two brothers posed together for the second time as they revealed a huge Adidas promotional campaign which launched on Channel 4. ‌ Now, Liam's son, Lennon, 25, has opened up about the upcoming tour. Speaking about his memories of the band before the dramatic split which sent shockwaves across the music industry, Lennon said: "Yeah, yeah. I think the last memory I have of Oasis was going to one of their final shows when I was like eight." Speaking about how the family are preparing for the mammoth shows which kick off on July 4, Lennon said: "But yeah, the family right now, we're just hunkering down, getting ready for it to start (the tour). And, you know, we all cannot wait. It's going to be fantastic." But he's not too fussed on rehearsals, admitting: "Nah, I'm just letting him get on with that. I'll see it for the real thing when it starts." It's no secret that music runs in the Gallagher blood, with Gene fronting the band Villanelle, and Lennon also a keen musician, although he recently announced his band, Automotive, had decided to split. So could the family form a supergroup and appear on stage together? He told the Associated Press: "Yeah, I mean, it'll be really fun one day for me and my brother, my dad and my uncle to be on-stage, I think that'd be quite funny." ‌ He has, however, already decided on what song he'd choose if the family were to ever join forces for a mega performance. "I'd like to do Be Here Now. That'd be pretty cool," he hinted. Meanwhile, Noel and Liam haven't been making music together; instead, they have been focusing on the upcoming tour as well as their Adidas campaign. The brothers were all smiles as they were spotted arriving separately at a working men's club in Newington Green, London, in April. It was understood at the time they were shooting promo material for Adidas as part of a new planned collaboration between the Gallaghers and the sports brand. Adidas will make its own Originals range based on the Oasis Live 25 tour. ‌ And now the advert has been unveiled to fans. In the promo video, the Oasis anthem Live Forever can be heard and there are scenes reminiscent of early Oasis gigs with fans wearing new Adidas clothing complete with the famous Oasis band logo. At one point, a tambourine appeared to hit ice, and Liam's voice could be heard saying: "There are days when you are in the zone, you know what I mean? You just stand perfectly still while there's all this chaos going on around you. Not feeling the need to join in the madness, just thinking, this is the best feeling in the world. Just absolutely still." ‌ Liam and Noel could then be seen heading to the stage ready to play a gig before the final shot of the advert showed them reunited and posing together. Liam's comments on the ad in some ways describe his posture on stage. He is well known for not dancing or moving, singing up to the mic with his trademark pose, with his hands behind his back. No doubt, whilst he does that later this month at the reunion shows, there will be "chaos" in the crowd as thousands of fans enjoy the first Oasis shows for 16 years. The biblical band split following a backstage bust-up between the Gallaghers at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris in 2009. But thankfully, the brothers have now made up, and it is believed Liam made the first move to patch things up. Get Oasis updates straight to your WhatsApp!

Charles shares affectionate moment with Duchess of York as race win hopes dashed

The King has known Sarah for decades but she appeared out of the royal fold until invited to spend Christmas Day with the King and Queen at Sandringham in 2023. King Charles kisses the hand of Sarah, Duchess of York (Andrew Matthews/PA) Among the famous racegoers was Harry Potter author JK Rowling who was spotted in a box at the grounds with her husband Neil Murray, former defence secretary Ben Wallace and the King's niece Zara Tindall. On the track the King and Queen's racing pot of gold failed to materialise when their horse Purple Rainbow was well beaten in the aptly named Sandringham Stakes. The royal couple watched the fast-paced race from the royal box and were glued to monitors, with the King animated in the closing stages of the mile-long sprint. He bobbed on the spot as if willing on his jockey Warren Fentiman but Purple Rainbow, who was not fancied by the bookies, did not challenge the front runners. The couple looked up in the closing stages to watch the race as it came past the stands but Never Let Go crossed the line first and the King and his wife were left opened-mouthed. The King and Queen watch their horse being beaten in the Sandringham Stakes (James Manning/PA) The touching greeting between the King and his former sister-in-law, who still remains close to ex-husband the Duke of York, may be in part due to their cancer journeys. The head of state is receiving ongoing cancer care while Sarah has spoken publicly about her own treatment for skin and breast cancer, undergoing a mastectomy. At the start of the day racegoers were given a respite from this week's sweltering conditions but the hazy cloud over the Berkshire racecourse burned away by late afternoon pushing up temperatures. Staff were handing out free bottles of water and Will Aitkenhead, head of corporate and industry affairs at the track, said they had worked hard overnight to provide more shaded areas. The King and Queen were joined in the royal box by Camilla's old school friend Lady Cavendish and her husband Lord Cavendish, the former Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad, the Queen's Companion the Marchioness of Lansdowne and musical maestro Lord Lloyd-Webber. JK Rowling in the stands at Royal Ascot (Andrew Matthews/PA) Charles and Camilla will have another chance at racing success – after two of their horses were well beaten earlier this week – when The King's Falcon runs in the Golden Gate Stakes, during Royal Ascot's final day on Saturday. The late Queen was a passionate owner and breeder of thoroughbreds and had more than 20 Royal Ascot winners during her 70-year reign. Charles and Camilla have taken on her stable of horses and enjoyed their first Royal Ascot winner in 2023 when their horse Desert Hero triumphed in the King George V Stakes. Royal Ascot is as much a social occasion as a sporting event and towards the end of the day an online video emerged of two men apparently fighting at the grounds where tens of thousands had enjoyed the day without incident.
