Kerala mountaineer Shaikh Hasan Khan stranded on North American peak, sends SOS amid severe storm
Shaikh Hasan Khan, a renowned mountaineer from Kerala, is reportedly stranded along with his team on Denali Mountain, North America's highest peak, and has sent an urgent SOS message via satellite phone seeking rescue and assistance. The climber encountered severe difficulties during the expedition, prompting calls for immediate help.
BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar took to X on Wednesday to inform that he had alerted External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar about the situation. 'I have alerted DrSJaishnakar and his team. I am also tagging Indian Embassy in Washington DC to please help. Stay Safe,' Chandrasekhar wrote.
Pathanamthitta MP Anto Antony has also appealed to Jaishankar for swift intervention. In a letter, Antony highlighted Khan's perilous condition due to a severe storm and the urgent need for rescue.
'Shaikh Hasan Khan, famous mountaineer from Kerala reportedly trapped on Mount Denali in America. He was on a mission to hoist the flag to congratulate the Indian Army for Operation Sindoor when he was trapped due to severe storm."
'He sent message requesting for urgent rescue and assistance due to shortage of water and food. Khan belongs to my parliamentary constituency Pathanamthitta.
'I request you to kindly give urgent direction to our mission in US to intervene in this matter and do all the possible assistance to help Khan,' Antony wrote.
Khan's distress message reads:
'Hi this is Shaikh. I am on an expedition to Mount Denali, the highest peak of North America. We are stuck in a severe storm at 17,000 ft at camp 5. Less food and water to survive. I am here on a mission to hold a banner to congratulate our armed forces for Operation Sindoor. Only God can help us.'
An employee of the Kerala government, Shaikh Hasan Khan has an impressive mountaineering record, including summiting Mount Everest in 2022, and several other peaks across continents.
The Indian government and embassy officials are reportedly coordinating efforts to ensure the safe rescue of Khan and his team amid the harsh weather conditions on Denali.

No word since last call 2 days, Chhattisgarh parents worry about daughter, her family in Iran
Chhattisgarh prisons department employee Kasim Raza (60) last spoke to his daughter, who lives with her husband and children in Iran, on Wednesday. She told him she was scared and wanted to come back to India amid the escalating Israel-Iran conflict. Since that call, there has been no communication from her. Raza's 29-year-old daughter, Eman, lives in the Iranian city of Qom. Her husband, Madhya Pradesh native Ejaz Zaidi (34), is pursuing maulviyat (traditional Islamic education) in Iran. They have two sons aged five and three. Qom is the city where several Indian students from the Iranian capital of Tehran, which has faced multiple strikes from Israel, have been moved to. While this gave the Raza family some hope that the city is relatively calm, the fact that there has been no communication from their daughter since Wednesday has left them worried. 'The last phone call we got from Eman was on Wednesday, when she said she was scared, that she wanted to come back to India, and that things were not going well in Iran. She and her mother were crying on the phone. I will soon submit a letter to the Indian government through the state government requesting them to make arrangements to get my daughter and her family back home,' Raza told The Indian Express from their home in Raipur. Raza last saw his daughter in 2023, when she had come to India for 45 days and stayed with her parents for a couple of weeks. Raza's wife, Shaheen, said, 'Our son-in-law was to come to India on June 13 for Muharram, but his flight got cancelled due to the ongoing conflict. We saw news that internet has been suspended (in Iran) for safety. We are unable to contact them, so we believe the internet is not working there. This is the first time we are facing such an issue. I got very scared when my grandson told me, yaha pe war chal rahi hai (a war is going on here). They do not understand what a war is!'

Himanta says will tighten cattle slaughter law after series of arrests bring issue to centre stage in Assam
Politics over cattle and beef have taken a centre-stage in Assam after a string of incidents in which suspected cattle remains have been recovered near places of worship, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma saying Friday that the government would tighten the enforcement of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, while Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi has alleged BJP involvement in these incidents ahead of next year's elections. In the past two weeks, at least 72 people have been arrested in Dhubri, Goalpara and Lakhimpur after three separate incidents of suspected cattle remains being recovered from near temples in the first two places, and near a namghar (community prayer hall) in Lakhimpur. Sarma Friday referred to these as an attempt to create unrest 'since Eid ul Zuha.' Speaking at a press conference, he said that all these incidents have taken place in 'sensitive areas.' 'When we look at all these incidents and wherever they have taken place, they are near localities where there have been arrangements of eating beef during Eid ul Zuha. Our cattle preservation bill says that if Hindu people stay in an area, or if there are temples or namghars, this kind of meat cannot be consumed within 5 kilometres radius near these. That is a legal provision,' he said. The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, that he was referring to has a section which prohibits the sale of beef and beef products in areas 'which are predominantly inhabited by Hindu, Jain, Sikh and other non-beef eating communities or within a radius of 5 km of any temple, satra, or other religious institutions belonging to Hindu religion or any other institution or area as may be prescribed by the competent authority.' Sarma said that the state government would prepare an SOP to stop qurbani (sacrifice) of cattle within a 5-km radius of such premises saying the enforcement of this 'can be a permanent solution.' 'Dhubri has one of the leading gurudwaras in the country. And there are many temples near that… But this time around Eid, the district administration had not enforced this provision the way it should have been done… So, we have directed district administrations that this significant section in our cattle preservation bill has to be enforced very strictly… This can be a permanent solution. If the 5 km provision is implemented, no one can eat and no one can slaughter within Dhubri town,' he said. Last week, he had also alleged that beef is being 'weaponised' against Hindus in the state to force them away from places. Hitting out against these developments, MP and Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi has accused Sarma of 'Jinnah-like politics' and alleged a BJP role in these incidents. 'There should be investigation into all these people who have been held so far on who gave them this idea, who gave them the advice. Those who have done it have done an offence, but who gave them the idea?… Elections are close, failures have to be hidden, and this is their whole strategy,' said Gogoi on Friday. 'There are some criminal minded people within them. Within the BJP, RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal, there are some criminal minded people who seek to do these kinds of things before elections. Our aim is not to let a communal environment be created inside Assam… We will not let him do his 'Jinnah-like' politics,' he added.
