Putin Dismisses Zelenskiy's Call for Direct Leaders Meeting

Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed the idea of a meeting with his counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy even as the Ukrainian leader reiterated his call for direct top-level negotiations as the only way to end the war.
'How can such meetings be held under these conditions? What is there to talk about?' Putin said during a televised meeting with government officials by video conference, discussing the collapse of bridges in Russia that Moscow blamed on Ukraine. Kyiv denies any involvement.
Zelenskyy hours earlier said that Russia's maximalist demands in negotiations mean there's no point in continuing with lower-level talks aimed at brokering an end to the war, but stressed he remains willing to meet directly with Putin.
'To continue diplomatic meetings in Istanbul at a level that does not resolve anything further is, in my opinion, meaningless,' Zelenskyy told reporters in Kyiv, calling Russia's conditions for peace an 'ultimatum.'
The comments from Putin and Zelenskyy underscore how far apart the two sides remain in peace talks that have restarted for the first time since the early days of the war. They come after a pair of audacious attacks against Russian targets in recent days that represented an embarrassing setback for the Kremlin.
Over the weekend, a section of a bridge in the Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine, struck a passenger train en route to Moscow shortly before midnight, killing seven people and injuring dozens. Hours later, a similar incident occurred in the Kursk region, but didn't result in any fatalities.
Ukraine's special services organized all the bridge explosions in Bryansk and Kursk regions over the weekend, Russian Investigative Committee Chairman Alexander Bastrykin said at the meeting with Putin. Ukraine hasn't claimed responsibility for the incidents.
Putin also said that Russia's Security Council would discuss the war in Ukraine at its upcoming meeting. The Russian leader didn't mention Ukraine's attack on strategic airfields as far away as eastern Siberia with drones hidden in trucks earlier this week. Several bombers were destroyed in the strike.
Ukraine also said on Tuesday that it attacked the bridge linking the Russian mainland to the Crimean peninsula Moscow illegally annexed in 2014 with explosives, which prompted authorities to twice temporarily close the road to traffic.
Putin continued to resist Ukraine's demands for a ceasefire.
'Why should they be rewarded by offering them a pause in hostilities, which will be used to arm the regime with Western weapons, continue forced mobilization, and prepare other terrorist attacks,' he said.
Another prisoner exchange with Russia involving around 500 people is possible over the coming weekend, according to Zelenskyy, who said that Russia was motivated by a desire to avoid further western sanctions.
Prisoner exchanges 'are going on and should go on, but the Russians are not ready for a ceasefire; at least the delegation level is not ready to resolve this and they believe that this is a matter for the leaders, they told us so themselves,' said Ukraine's president.
Zelenskyy proposed a ceasefire until a leaders' meeting in a place 'of Russia's choice,' citing Istanbul, the Vatican, or Switzerland.
In Washington, the president's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and discussed the Istanbul talks and 'the further course of negotiations,' Yermak said in an X post.
'I emphasized that Ukraine has done everything possible to achieve peace and is ready for a ceasefire — but Russia refuses,' he said. 'That is why additional sanctions are necessary.'

9 killed, over a dozen injured in Russian missile attacks on Ukraine

A Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine's capital overnight killed at least nine people and injured others, according to local officials, as rescue workers and firefighters sought to remove people they believed trapped under debris in a partially collapsed apartment building. Elsewhere in Ukraine, a Russian short-range drone attack killed two people and wounded 10 more in the Chernihiv region late Sunday night, authorities said. According to the regional administration head, Viacheslav Chaus, three children were among the wounded. Another person was killed and eight wounded overnight in the city of Bila Tserkva, around 85 kilometers (53 miles) southwest of the capital. The strikes came nearly a week after a combined Russian attack on Ukraine last Tuesday killed 28 people in Kyiv, 23 of them in a residential building that collapsed after sustaining a direct hit by a missile. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called that attack one of the biggest bombardments of the war, now in its fourth year. In the early hours of Monday, drones and missiles hit residential areas, hospitals and sports infrastructure in numerous districts across Kyiv, emergency services said, with the most severe damage occurring in the Shevchenkivskyi district, where one section of a five-story apartment building collapsed. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said six people were confirmed dead in the Shevchenkivskyi district. Ten others, including a pregnant woman, were rescued from a nearby high-rise that also sustained heavy damage in the blast. Dozens of vehicles, some burned out and others mangled by flying debris from the blast, formed a snarl in the courtyard in front of the building, which had collapsed down to the second floor. Onlookers, some wrapped in blankets, watched tearfully as the cleanup operation took place. Dozens of volunteers worked to remove broken glass, downed tree branches and other debris. Klitschko told reporters from the scene that we very much hope that the death toll will not increase, but that rescue workers were still searching the collapsed building for further casualties. Russia fired a total of 352 exploding drones and decoys overnight, Ukraine's air force said. Russia also launched 11 ballistic missiles and five cruise missiles. Air defences intercepted or jammed 339 drones and 15 missiles before they could reach their targets, the statement said. Meanwhile, Russia's Defence Ministry said its air defences shot down 23 Ukrainian drones overnight into Monday.

We are responsible for ‘Network …' message on Donald Trump's Truth Social platform, claim Iranian-aligned hackers

AI-generated image (Representative purpose only) Truth Social suffered a brief outage last week after President Donald Trump announced a US attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. Days later, a group of hackers aligned with Iran - 313 Team has claimed responsibility for the social media platform's malfunction. The group claims that it carried out a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack that briefly took down the platform on Saturday (June 21) night. The non-profit Center for Internet Security (CIS) and several social media watchdogs confirmed the claim, says a report by Mediaite. Truth Social outage after Trump's post Trump posted around 7.46 pm ET that the United States had entered Israel's war against Iran stating that the US had waged a 'very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.' Some screenshots suggest API congestion as the cause of the disruption. Truth Social became inaccessible shortly after 8 p.m. ET (5:30am IST), soon after Trump used the platform to announce the US strikes on Iran. This cyberattack claim comes amid growing concerns about digital retaliation from Iran. Last week, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a bulletin warning that Iranian-linked hackers may look to target American networks in response to US support for Israeli airstrikes. 'Iranian government-affiliated cyber actors will probably prioritize retaliatory attacks against Israeli targets in the short term but may target U.S. networks due to their perception of U.S. support for Israeli strikes,' the DHS said. 6 Awesome New Features Coming in Android 16!

Russia's Vladimir Putin to hold ‘important talks' with Iranian minister Abbas Araghchi after US attacks. What we know…

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for 'important talks' in Moscow today (June 23), according to Russian Interfax agency, which cited Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov. As per another AFP report, Araghchi left Tehran on Sunday (June 22) for his meeting with their ally, some 48 hours after the US bombed key nuclear sites in Iran. Moscow is a crucial backer of Tehran, but has not swung forcefully behind its partner since Israel launched a wave of attacks on June 13, strikes that triggered Iran to respond with missiles and drones. While Russia condemned the Israeli and US strikes, it has not offered military help and has downplayed its obligations under a sweeping strategic partnership agreement signed with Tehran just months ago. "In this new dangerous situation ... our consultations with Russia can certainly be of great importance," Russian state media reported Araghchi as saying after landing in Moscow. The official IRNA news agency reported Sunday that Araghchi would "hold consultations with the president and other senior officials of Russia regarding regional and international developments following the military aggression by the United States and the Zionist regime against Iran." Putin initially pitched himself as a possible mediator between Iran and Israel, but on Friday said he was only "suggesting ideas", after US President Donald Trump pushed back against a role for the Kremlin leader. "We are by no means seeking to act as a mediator, we are simply suggesting ideas," Putin said at an economic forum in Saint Petersburg. "If they turn out to be attractive to both sides, we will only be happy," he added. Russia's foreign ministry on Saturday condemned the US strikes as "irresponsible," after having previously warned against military intervention. (With inputs from Agencies)
