IPL 2025: Varun Aaron
New Delhi [India], May 21 (ANI): Former India tearaway Varun Aaron was 'surprised' by Rajasthan Royals' decision not to begin with right-arm seamer Akash Madhwal, who fired off a Player of the Match performance with his scorching spell against Chennai Super Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the 18th season of the Indian Premier League.
Uttarakhand's Madhwal was thrown into the mix for Rajasthan's last four fixtures after losing its mainstay Sandeep Sharma to injury. He returned with a scalp in his first three matches but shone in the Royals' last game of their shambolic campaign.
He broke the backbone of Chennai's middle-order and cleaned up Dewald Brevis with a touch of late swing. In the final over of the first innings, Madhwal kept a check on the scoring rate and punched a return ticket of Chennai's power-hitters Shivam Dube and skipper MS Dhoni. With a stellar outing, the 31-year-old returned with figures of 3/29 after bowling a full quota of four overs, setting the stage for Rajasthan to gun down the 188-run target and trounce the five-time champions.
'I thought he really used the conditions well, pulled some good yorkers with that round-arm action of his. He gets a little tail, just slightly tails in towards the end. Brevis missed it and got the inside edge. He had no hesitation, stuck to his plans, executed really well--and that's how you do well in the IPL,' Aaron said on JioHotstar.
Aaron felt that if Madhwal, who possesses 'good' death bowling skills, could have sorted out Rajasthan's woes at the end and formed a 'good' pair with Sandeep Sharma.
'I'm just surprised they didn't start with Akash Madhwal this season. He had a very decent season last year. He's got very good death bowling skills. The biggest concern was their death bowling. Alongside Sandeep Sharma, he would've made a really good pairing. I don't know why they used him only after the 7th or 8th game--but he's delivering results now,' he added.
After trouncing Chennai with a six-wicket triumph, Rajasthan finished their campaign in the ninth spot with eight points, and they are likely to hold onto that position considering their superior net run rate to the Super Kings. (ANI)

Rishabh Pant Breaks MS Dhoni's Historic Record With Fiery Ton, Sunil Gavaskar Quips: "Get An Ambulance..."
Rishabh Pant, who was unbeaten on 65 at the close of play on Day 1, smashed his 7th Test century, overtaking MS Dhoni as India's most decorated wicketkeeper-batter in terms of centuries scored in Test cricket. Pant achieved the feat on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test against England in Leeds on Saturday. Former India captain Dhoni scored his sixth and final Test century in 2014. Pant celebrated his century in a unique fashion, dishing out a summersault. Reacting to Pant's celebration, legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar made a cheeky remark on air. "After that, you need to keep a stretcher and ambulance ready, just in case," Gavaskar was heard as saying. Most Test centuries by designated WKs (India) 7* Rishabh Pant 6 MS Dhoni 3 Wriddhiman Saha On Day 1, Pant overtook Rohit Sharma to become India's leading six-hitter in World Test Championship (WTC). Ahead of the match, Pant was tied with Rohit on 56 sixes each, despite playing six less games in that period. He hit two sixes on Day 1 two surpass Rohit and increase his tally. In the overall list, Pant is only behind England captain Ben Stokes, who has smashed 83 sixes in 54 WTC fixtures. On Day 1, Pant had joined Gill after Jaiswal's wicket, and he welcomed Stokes with a four on the second ball, a soothing sight after a colossal failure that was his 2025 IPL stint with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), except for a century against champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). During the course of his half-century, Pant overtook Dhoni to become Asia's most successful wicketkeeper in SENA conditions and also brought up his 3,000 Test runs, becoming only the second after Dhoni to do so. Earlier on Day 1, a composed century from debutant captain Shubman Gill, a fluent ton by Yashasvi Jaiswal, and a measured innings from vice-captain Rishabh Pant powered India to a dominant 359/3 at stumps on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley on Friday. After Jaiswal set the tone with a sparkling 101 off 159 balls, featuring sixteen boundaries and a six, Gill took over with a captain's knock, showing maturity and poise throughout his unbeaten 127-run effort. The stylish right-hander struck sixteen fours and a maximum in his 175-ball stay, steering India to their highest-ever first-day total in a Test match on English soil. Pant supported his skipper brilliantly, remaining unbeaten on 65 from 102 deliveries. His innings was laced with six fours and two towering sixes, and he looked in full control alongside Gill in their unbroken 138-run partnership.

Just like in IPL 2025, Pant marked the milestone with a front flip—cementing a quirky new tradition in his cricketing this year, Pant had first pulled off the celebration after smashing a 61-ball century for Lucknow Super Giants in their final IPL fixture of the season, against eventual champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The milestone came in typically flamboyant fashion, with Pant launching spinner Shoaib Bashir into the stands to bring up his arrived at the crease on Day 1 after the dismissal of fellow centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had scored 101, stitching together a vital 129-run partnership with captain Shubman Gill. While Jaiswal's exit could have been a turning point, Pant's authoritative presence ensured the momentum stayed with India.
