Prof Mihir Mishra appointed member of OPSC; OSSC secures full strength

BHUBANESWAR: The state government on Tuesday appointed Prof Mihir Prasad Mishra, principal of SCS (Autonomous) College, Puri, as member, Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) and three others as members of Odisha Staff Selection Commission (OSSC).
With the appointment of Mishra, OPSC will now have three members leaving two posts vacant. The commission is a six-member body including chairman. Retired IPS officer Arun Sarangi is the current chairman and the two other members are Sarita Supakar and Shyama Bhakta Mishra. A notification issued by the General Administration department said Prof Mishra will have a term of six years from the date he joins office or until he attains the age of 62 years, whichever is earlier.
Director, Census Operations, Udaya Narayan Das, retired IAS officer Sudhakar Burgi and former professor in department of English of Berhampur University Shruti Das have been appointed as members of the Odisha Staff Selection Commission.

Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday said Congress is in favour of Hindi but English opens new avenues in the world for everyone. The previous Congress government in Rajasthan established about 3700 Mahatma Gandhi English medium schools to promote education in English among the poor and middle class and rural areas. Due to this decision, about 6.50 lakh students started receiving education in English, he said. The Congress leader added, "The BJP government in the state tried to close these English medium schools but could not take such a step due to their popularity among the public.

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Saturday (June 21, 2025) echoed Union Home Minister Amit Shah's concern that the mother tongue is being sidelined in favour of English. Responding to Mr. Shah's recent remark that English-speaking Indians may soon feel ashamed, Mr. Palaniswami said the mother tongue holds an important place in society and added that everybody has their own views. 'He has spoken about the importance of the mother tongue. His concern is that more importance is being given to English than to native languages,' Mr. Palaniswami told reporters at the Coimbatore airport. On the Keezhadi excavations, Mr. Palaniswami said the party had already explained its role. 'IT Wing secretary K. Pandiarajan has detailed the steps taken during the tenure of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and by the government that followed. All necessary clarifications were provided,' he said. Asked about the Muruga Bhaktargal conference being held in Madurai, he said, 'In a democratic country, every citizen and organisation has the right to worship the deity of their choice. Those organising the Muruga Bhaktargal conference are exercising that right. I extend my wishes.' On allegations that DMK functionaries used obscene language in public, Mr. Palaniswami said, 'We have already condemned such remarks. People are disturbed by them.
