Malaysia's anti-corruption agency ‘vindictive' in pursuit of Daim's estate, widow says
The widow of
Malaysian tycoon and former politician Daim Zainuddin has hit back at the country's anti-corruption agency, accusing it of being 'vindictive' by continuing to seize assets from his estate in both Malaysia and the United Kingdom despite no criminal conviction.
On Thursday, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) took control of Daim's 58-storey Ilham Tower in Kuala Lumpur, alleging that it was tied to offences under the anti-money-laundering law.
This is despite the commission having already taken the same action in 2023, a move that the family's lawyers said amounted to 'harassment'.
'This is vindictive, unlawful and a blatant abuse of power by MACC. This is contrary to the rule of law; it is the law of the jungle,' lawyers Rajesh Nagarajan and Sachpreetraj Singh Sohanpal said in a statement on the day of the seizure.
A day before, a Malaysian court authorised the MACC to start proceedings in the UK to
recover assets worth £132 million (US$179 million), including two commercial buildings, three luxury homes, two residential units and a bank account held by the Daim family-linked Ilham Foundation.

US singer Chris Brown pleads not guilty in London nightclub assault case
Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown pleaded not guilty on Friday to a charge related to the serious beating of a music producer with a bottle in a London nightclub in 2023. Brown, 36, wearing a blue suit, white shirt and black-rimmed glasses, was arraigned in London's Southwark Crown Court on one count of attempting to unlawfully and maliciously cause grievous bodily harm with intent. Brown's friend and fellow musician Omololu Akinlolu, 39, who performs under the name 'Hoody Baby' pleaded not guilty to the same charge. Prosecutors previously said Brown and Akinlolu assaulted producer Abe Diaw at a bar in the Tape nightclub in the swanky Mayfair neighbourhood in February 2023. Brown allegedly launched an unprovoked attack on Diaw and hit him several times with a bottle and then punched and kicked him. The attack was caught on surveillance camera in front of a club full of people, prosecutors said. Brown was originally charged with a single count of grievous bodily harm after his arrest in May, but prosecutors subsequently brought an indictment adding two counts: assault causing actual bodily harm and having an offensive weapon, a bottle.

Malaysia's Najib discharged over US$6.3 million money laundering case
A judge on Friday discharged disgraced former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak from a US$6.3 million money laundering case after ruling that the prosecution had failed to provide relevant documents to the defence. The ruling marks the second time a case involving Najib has been dismissed due to prosecutorial inaction, raising fresh questions about the conduct and priorities of the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC). Najib, who led the country for nine years until his defeat in the 2018 general election, is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence following his 2020 conviction in the first of several 1MDB-related cases . For this case, he has maintained that he was granted the right to home detention under the directive of Malaysia 's previous king. On Friday, High Court judge K. Muniandy granted Najib's application for a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) after defence lawyer Shafee Abdullah argued that it was unjust to keep the former prime minister in legal limbo for more than six years without a confirmed trial date. '[Najib] is very happy simply because there are not too many cases overhanging his head [now],' the lawyer told reporters after the verdict. A DNAA does not absolve the accused of an alleged offence and allows the prosecution to refile charges at a later date. Najib, now 72, was initially charged in February 2019 with three counts of receiving 27 million ringgit (US$6.3 million) in proceeds from unlawful activities through three personal bank accounts on July 8, 2014.

Malaysian baby smothered to death by body of father, who died of heart attack
A family in Malaysia has suffered a heartbreaking double tragedy after a baby was smothered by his father, who had died in his sleep from a heart attack and rolled onto his child. Advertisement Three-month-old Muhammad Nur Daniel Nuruleffendy was pronounced dead by hospital officials in Melaka state, not long after he was brought in unconscious by his mother on Thursday morning. Azura Abdul Mallik, 40, found her third child on her bed with his face under her husband's right arm after coming back from her office at about 9.30am to take him for a check-up at a nearby clinic. Both Daniel and her husband, Nuruleffendy Ibrahim, 35, were unconscious but the baby was still breathing at the time. Nuruleffendy's sister, Masturadiana Ibrahim, said she learned of the incident only after Azura came to her house frantically asking for help. Advertisement 'She knocked repeatedly and called out my name saying: 'Help me, help me!',' Masturadiana, who lives opposite her brother and his family, told reporters at the Melaka general hospital.
