In Istanbul, top Arab League diplomats discuss Iran-Israel war
ISTANBUL: Arab League foreign ministers gathered in Istanbul late Friday to discuss the escalating war between Iran and Israel, Turkish state news agency Anadolu said, quoting diplomatic sources.
The ministers were in Turkey's largest city on the eve of weekend gathering of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which was also slated to discuss the air war launched a week ago.
Israel began its assault in the early hours of June 13, saying Iran was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons, triggering an immediate immediate retaliation from Tehran in the worst-ever confrontation between the two arch-rivals.
European powers urge Iran to continue US nuclear talks
Some 40 top diplomats are slated to join the weekend gathering of the OIC which will also have a session dedicated to discussing the Iran-Israel crisis, the Turkish foreign ministry said.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who met with his counterparts from Britain, France and Germany in Geneva on Friday, will also attend and address the diplomats, the ministry said.
Earlier on Friday, Araghchi said Tehran was ready to 'consider diplomacy' again only if Israel's 'aggression is stopped'.
The Arab League ministers were expected to release a statement following their meeting, Anadolu said.

PTI expresses strong solidarity with Iran
ISLAMABAD: The opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday expressed strong solidarity with Iran, declaring that the people of Pakistan stand firmly with their Iranian brethren amid ongoing hostilities between Iran and Israel. A PTI delegation, led by the Opposition Leader in National Assembly Omar Ayub, comprising senior party leaders, visited the Iranian Embassy to convey support on behalf of the Pakistani nation. The delegation met with Iran's Ambassador to Pakistan Dr Reza Amiri Moghadam. The visit was undertaken on the instructions of PTI's incarcerated patron-in-chief and ex-prime minister Imran Khan. A message from Khan was formally delivered to the Iranian envoy during the meeting. During his meeting with the Iranian envoy, Ayub condemned the Israeli aggression, calling recent actions by Tel Aviv violations of international law. 'We stand firmly with the Iranian government and its people,' he said. 'From Gaza to Tehran, the cries of the oppressed are shaking the conscience of the world.' He urged the international community to recognise Iran's right to self-defence and called on the Muslim world to move beyond symbolic gestures and adopt practical steps. 'Israel has become a threat to global peace,' he added, reiterating PTI's support for Iran. The acting PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan who was also part of the delegation, said that 'we extended condolences over the recent losses in Iran and assured the ambassador that the people, opposition, and government of Pakistan stand united with Iran during this challenging time.' Separately, talking to journalists outside Parliament House, Khan reaffirmed that any efforts regarding Imran Khan's release would be pursued solely through constitutional and legal means. 'There will be no deal,' Khan asserted, dismissing speculation of backdoor negotiations. 'Imran Khan has always maintained that he will not seek or accept any deal.' He also emphasised that PTI had never sought assistance from any foreign government. 'We are not relying on the new US administration or any foreign intervention,' he said. Qatar holds talks with energy companies
DOHA/LONDON: Qatar held crisis talks this week with energy majors after Israeli strikes on Iran's huge gas field, which it shares with Qatar, an industry source and a diplomat in the region told Reuters. Saad Al Kaabi, CEO of state-owned QatarEnergy and the Gulf Arab state's energy minister, urged companies to warn the US, Britain and European governments about the risks the conflict poses to gas exports from Qatar and the increasing threat to the global gas supply, they said. An interruption to Qatar's liquefied natural gas (LNG) operation could cut off around 20% of the global supply, which Doha exports from the world's largest gas reservoir. 'QatarEnergy is making sure that foreign governments are fully aware of the implications and repercussions the situation and further escalation pose to gas production from Qatar,' said the diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. QatarEnergy did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Kaabi also met this week in Doha with ambassadors representing countries whose companies are involved in QatarEnergy's North Field expansion project, the diplomat said. US majors ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips, Britain's Shell, Italy's Eni and France's TotalEnergies all have stakes in the expansion, which is set to boost exports from Qatar by around 82% in the coming years. Qatar currently produces 77 million tonnes of liquefied gas a year. So far, there have been no disruptions to QatarEnergy's exports, and cargo deliveries are on schedule. Israel began attacking Iran last Friday, saying its longtime enemy was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons. Iran, which says its nuclear programme is only for peaceful purposes, retaliated with missile and drone strikes on Israel.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday expressed Pakistan's readiness to play a constructive role in international peace efforts amid growing concerns over the Iran-Israel crisis, during a telephone call initiated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, Secretary Rubio rang up Prime Minister Sharif to discuss the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East, particularly the Iran-Israel crisis. Sharif described the crisis as 'deeply worrying, not only for the region, but for the entire world,' and called for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. Rubio acknowledged Pakistan's strong relations with Iran and encouraged Islamabad to continue playing a constructive role in the ongoing peace efforts with Tehran. He reaffirmed Washington's commitment to working closely with Pakistan to promote both regional and global stability. During a warm and cordial conversation, Prime Minister Sharif conveyed his best wishes to US President Donald Trump and praised his bold leadership. He also lauded Secretary Rubio's proactive diplomacy, particularly his role in helping Pakistan and India reach a ceasefire understanding, which PM Sharif said averted a major confrontation between the two nuclear-armed states.
