Attempt being made to disturb Madurai's tradition of social harmony
Madurai has a tradition of social harmony where equality and brotherhood is followed. The Sangh Parivar is conducting the Lord Murugan devotees conference in Madurai to disturb this harmony and keeping the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections on their mind, said VCK president and Chidambaram MP Thol. Thirumavalavan, on Thursday.
Addressing the gathering at the Human Chain protest organised in Madurai by the members of Madurai Madha Nallinakka Makkal Kootamaipu, Mr. Thirumavalavan said that BJP, Hindu Munnani and the Sangh Paraivar who have never voiced for the public with respect to several issues had earlier tried to divide the people through the Tirupparankundaram issue. Now, they are attempting to disturb harmony though the conference.
They have never spoken for precedence to Tamil in the temple rituals and are taking steps to eliminate the findings of Keeladi and Tamil civilization. The Sangh Parivar is trying to use the method which is being used by them in the North to divide the people. The people of Tamil Nadu should stay united and oppose the attempt being made to disturb communal harmony, he said.
Advocate S. Vanchinathan, the Coordinator of the forum, said that the conference organised by Hindu Munnani is not a religious conference, but was a political conference targeting the 2026 Assembly elections. Mixing religion and politics is dangerous. In the North, they divided the people in the name of Lord Ram and here they want to do the same in the name of Lord Murugan, he said. He urged the State government to monitor the conference and ensure that communal harmony is not disturbed.
Earlier, Mr. Thirumavalavan visited Tirupparankundram and interacted with the people. Addressing media persons, he said that an attempt had been made to divide the people. But, there was no enmity between the people and they have remained united.

Not must for students to learn Hindi under NEP: RSS education wing
Amid row over languages to be studied under the National Education Policy (NEP), the RSS's education wing — Vidya Bharati — has made its stand clear that it is not necessary for everyone to study Hindi. Vidya Bharati's national president Ravindra Kanhare on Friday said: 'Vidya Bharti is of the opinion that education should be in mother tongue. This is something that has been said in the 1968 policy (on education) and has been proposed in the NEP as well. No language is being foisted upon any state. It has been said that children should read their language, one national language and any foreign language. If someone is from Tamil Nadu, they can learn Tamil or one from Kerala can learn Malayalam. It is not necessary for them to learn Hindi. The NEP draft had been sent to all states.' Kanhare was speaking at Vidya Bharati's annual press conference at Constitution Club. On the issue of rising school fees in private schools in metropolitan cities, he said 'if parents create pressure, fees can be redetermined'. He also said that parents must judge whether their children are getting quality education to justify the fees they pay. 'To determine the school fees is the job of state governments. In states there is generally a system where if the fees are to be increased, it would be done through a committee under the district magistrate. If the fees are to be increased by more, a state-level committee looks into it. Parents must see whether the schools are providing the kind of quality education that such fees must afford. If the parents create pressure, the fees can be redetermined,' Kanhare said. The statement comes in the backdrop of the growing concern over arbitrary hike in fees by private schools in metropolitan cities. The Delhi Public School in the Capital's Dwarka has been chided by the High Court as having become a 'money making machine' which treats students like 'chattel'. Answering a question on NCERT removing the mention of the Babri mosque from Class 12 textbooks, Kanhare said, 'To bring changes in the curriculum is NCERT's job. We must stick to historical facts in books. We have seen in all these years that misleading information has been provided in some books. If they have been removed now then there is nothing wrong with that.' Talking about Vidya Bharti's success stories in the past one year, Kanhare said while over 93% of students of its schools succeeded in Class 12th with more than 2,500 students scoring above 90%, as many as 27 of its alumni cleared the UPSC this year.

AIADMK, DMK spar over Keeladi
Chennai: Asserting that did not spend even a paisa for Keeladi archaeological explorations, on Friday accused it of politicising the excavation report submitted by ASI official K Amarnath Ramakrishna. Addressing reporters at AIADMK headquarters, former minister Mafoi K Pandiarajan said the previous AIADMK govt was instrumental in the ongoing archaeological explorations and excavations in eight places. The govt acquired 100 acres from farmers amidst unrest and sent artefacts to advanced laboratories in the US, Singapore, and Italy for carbon dating and material analysis. When the Centre hesitated to fund further excavations, former chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami stepped in and allocated funds to continue the research by the state archaeology department, and reports were submitted to the Centre, he said. "Only the AIADMK did excavation in Keeladi, while the DMK politicised it," Pandiarajan said, adding that the EPS govt had allotted 105 crore every year. At Anna Arivalayam, DMK medical wing secretary and MLA N Ezhilan told reporters that Pandiarajan's statement that AIADMK allotted 105 crore for Keeladi excavation was a blatant lie. "The AIADMK govt allotted only 55 lakh." When Union govt halted the excavations abruptly in 2016, DMK MP Kanimozhi went to the court. Only after the court directed the resumption of the excavation did the AIADMK govt continue the exercise, he said. "TN people will never forgive EPS for betraying Tamil culture and its ancient heritage," Ezhilan added. Pandiarajan said the previous report on Keeladi findings proved Tamil was a developed writing system 2,500 years ago. The latest report from Ramakrishna outlined a different time bracket, prompting the ASI to ask for clarification. "You must respond. Instead, submitting the paper to (chief minister) Stalin and making him speak is nothing but politics," he said. Pandiarajan said the Union govt was not saying that Tamil was not ancient.

HC sets aside condition to obtain vehicle passes from district police
Madurai: Madras high court on Friday set aside the condition imposed by Madurai city police to obtain vehicle passes for participation in the Lord Murugan devotees conference, saying the right to movement throughout the territory of India is guaranteed to all citizens under Article 19(1)(d) of the Constitution. The court modified the order of a single bench in this regard. The court was hearing an appeal filed by Hindu Munnani functionary M Arasupandi challenging a condition imposed by a single bench. The petitioner had earlier filed another petition challenging certain conditions imposed by the city police while permitting the conference. The single bench had refused to interfere with the condition requiring participants to obtain passes for vehicles from the concerned district police. Aggrieved by the condition, the petitioner moved Supreme Court. The petition was disposed of as withdrawn on the petitioner's request, following which he preferred the present appeal before high court. Senior counsel appearing for the petitioner submitted that the object of the state appears to be to put spokes in the wheels and discourage participants to the conference. A division bench of Justice G R Swaminathan and Justice K Rajasekar observed that since the authorities themselves chose to grant permission for the conference, no exception can be taken to its conduct. The condition imposed by the assistant commissioner of police, Anna Nagar, Madurai city, states that no vehicle carrying the conference participants without a vehicle pass will be allowed to enter city limits. An assistant commissioner can have jurisdiction and sway only over her territorial limits. The official cannot issue an order preventing the entry of vehicles into Madurai city. It is open to any citizen to enter Madurai city in his/her vehicle, and such a right cannot be interfered with by an assistant commissioner, said the judges. In the case on hand, not more than 10,000 vehicles are expected, and therefore, there is no need to impose such an onerous condition. The appellant undertook that participants who come in their personal vehicles or hired vehicles would deposit the photostat copies of the RC book, insurance certificate, and driving licence at the police booths at various parking places earmarked. "The organisers assure us that pucca arrangements have been made so that there is no stampede, which was witnessed in Bengaluru, Delhi, and other places recently," the judges observed.
