Harvard Magna Carta 'copy' is original, experts say

What was long thought to be a copy of the Magna Carta at Harvard Law School in the US is in fact an extremely rare original from among seven surviving versions of the document issued by English
King Edward I
in 1300, British experts said on Thursday.
The "Great Charter," the first extant expression in writing of the principle that a king and his government are not above the law, originally dates from June 1215, when it was signed by King John. Among other things, it was key to the drawing up of the
US Declaration of Independence
and constitution in the late 18th century.
Harvard obtained the document in the 1940s for just $27.50, the equivalent of just over $470 (€420) today, according to a US Department of Labor inflation calculator.
What did the experts say?
Experts from King's College London and the University of East Anglia (UEA) based their conclusion on an analysis of the document's size and its handwriting.
These were consistent with those in the six previously known originals from the slightly amended set released by Edward I in an act known as the Confirmation of the Charters.

"Harvard's Magna Carta deserves celebration, not as some mere copy, stained and faded, but as an original of one of the most significant documents in world constitutional history, a cornerstone of freedoms past, present and yet to be won."
The new insights on the document come as Harvard University has been barred from receiving new federal grants by the Trump administration, which many critics see as violating some of the key principles enshrined in the Magna Carta.

Initial Repairs Failed, Bigger UK Team Expected Soon after the emergency landing, a UK Navy technical team from the HMS Prince of Wales was flown in to assess and fix the issue. According to PTI, six of those technicians returned to the ship on Tuesday afternoon, while three personnel—including the pilot—remain at Thiruvananthapuram to oversee ongoing efforts. A larger 30-member team from the UK is now expected to arrive within 48 to 72 hours to carry out further inspections and attempt more extensive repairs. If the hydraulic fault cannot be resolved on site, a British military transport aircraft may be sent to airlift the jet out of India, sources said. IAF And Local Support The emergency was first detected and cleared by the Indian Air Force's Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS), which tracked the aircraft's distress signal and authorised the unscheduled landing. The Indian Air Force has since continued to provide logistical support. The airport operator, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport Ltd (TIAL), has been facilitating the stay of the British team by providing accommodation and meals. A local ground handling agency was also arranged at the Royal Navy's request. Still No Clearance For Departure While efforts to fix the snag continue, the F-35B will only be cleared for departure—whether by air or transport aircraft—after legal, diplomatic, and aviation safety clearances are in place, officials said. In sections A and B, questions were in English and Telugu and English and Urdu. In section C, questions were in English only. Joy Turns Into Grief: Soon-To-Be-Parents Were On Doomed London Flight
Vaibhav Patel (29) and Jinal Goswami (27) were soon going to be parents to their first child. Jinal was seven months pregnant, and the final couple of months were nothing less than a mix of excitement and anxiety. The couple's families also couldn't wait to celebrate and welcome a new member onboard. There was a strong urge to prepare the nest for the little one's arrival. On June 2, they celebrated Jinal's baby shower with a traditional ceremony and intimate gathering. But their joy soon turned into grief. On Monday, Vaibhav and Jinal were cremated amid hue and cry. The couple were among the 274 victims of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12. They belonged to Keliya Vasna village of Dholka tehsil but lived in London and even recently moved to Southampton in Hampshire. They had travelled to Ahmedabad for Jinal's baby shower and were scheduled to return to London via flight AI 171 that ultimately crashed minutes after take-off. Friends and relatives close to the two families said a baby shower was held for Jinal on June 2, with a traditional ceremony and an intimate gathering, comprising close friends and relatives. The anxious long days of never ending wait was soon to be over. The couple's close friend Nirav Patel told the BBC that they were very happy and excited for the birth of their first child. "Vaibhav did not have a father, so he was the big son supporting the family back in India," he said. "He had rung me two days before the flight to tell me he was coming home. We were very good friends and had so much fun together... many trips around India, like to Goa or Rajasthan. This is a massive loss," he added. Only an idol of Lord Krishna, which friends and families claimed was held by Jinal at the time of the flight, has so far been recovered from the crash site. There were 242 people - 230 passengers, two pilots and 10 crew members - onboard the aircraft that crashed into a medical college seconds after taking off for London Gatwick Airport from Ahmedabad. Of these, only one - an Indian-origin British national - survived the crash. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the victims. Several people on the ground were also killed in the incident.
