New multiplex launches to boost Kochi's entertainment sector
Kochi: The entertainment sector will receive a major boost with several multiplex theatres expected to come up in the city and its suburbs soon.
Besides the existing more than half-a-dozen major multiplex theatres in different shopping malls, at least four more multiplex theatres will come soon.
A noted theatre group based in Kochi will launch a new four-screen multiplex at Kakkanad soon, and another multiplex will be opened in an upcoming major shopping mall at Willingdon Island.
A four-screen multiplex theatre will come up at Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) in Nedumbassery, and a new multiplex will be opened on Chittoor Road soon. A new multiplex is proposed as part of Chithranjali project in Kakkanad.
The twin theatres of Lulu and Mymoon, which closed down 15 years ago, on Chittoor Road will be reopened within four months. They will be revived as a multiplex theatre by Lulu Group in collaboration with PVR Cinemas. The theatre complex is situated on around 2 acres of prime land. Mohanlal's 'Mahasamudram' was the last major release at the theatre. The new project will be a standalone theatre project by PVR group with four to five screens, including a PIXL screen, it is learned.
HiLITE will set up its screens at its Boulevard project near Thoppumpady under its own theatre brand 'Palaxi Cinemas'. The new multiplex to come up at Cial's proposed mall in the airport compound is in the initial stage of discussions.
"Cinema halls, both multiplexes and traditional theatres, have successfully drawn substantial audiences over the last year, contributing to the rapid expansion of multiplexes across urban areas.
While multiplex operators face significant challenges and losses in various states due to film industry difficulties, their operations in Kerala continue to generate substantial profits," said K Vijayakumar, president of Film Exhibitors United Organisations of Kerala (Feuok).
Besides new ones, many theatres are planning major facelifts in the coming months. There are reports of Dolby Laboratories planning to launch Dolby Cinema Screens at an existing multiplex theatre in Fort Kochi.
One of the oldest theatre complexes in the city, Saritha, Savitha and Sangeetha, is under renovation and will be modernised soon. In Dec last year, Cinepolis opened the first Imax screen in Kochi, at Centre Square Mall on MG Road.
The theatre, with seating for 229, has 4K laser projection and a patented sound system.
"The multiplexes boom indicates an increase in city's economic growth. Kochi has the highest number of screens, and new theatres opening is expected to give a boost to the city's growth as the capital of Mollywood," said Arjun Prakash of Kochi Next Forum collective.
The growth of malls has often been closely tied to the rise of multiplexes, as both benefit from increased visitor traffic. Notably, several once-prestigious malls across the state that lack multiplexes are now struggling, with top retailers shutting down. As the middle class continues to grow, more multiplexes are likely to emerge in the city and its suburbs. However, the key to their sustained success lies in the consistent performance of the films they screen.

Director Jeethu Joseph confirms Drishyam 3 to release in 3 languages with same plot
The long-awaited 'Drishyam 3', starring Mohanlal, is officially set to go on floors this October. The announcement was made by director Jeethu Joseph and the production team with a video. The film will be shot simultaneously in three languages, Malayalam, Hindi, and video opens with a close-up of George Kutty's eye. Fans of the Malayalam thriller franchise were thrilled by the news, but it also sparked speculation about the Hindi remake and whether it would follow the same storyline. Putting all doubts to rest, Joseph, who has written and directed the entire trilogy, confirmed that the Hindi version will follow the same an interview with ETimes, the director said, "The script of the third film is nearing completion. There have been reports that the Hindi version will have a different story, but that's not true. The Hindi film will also be based on my story. Once I complete my script, it will be shared with the Hindi team, who will then adapt it to suit their setting and make suitable cultural changes." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Aashirvad Cinemas (@aashirvadcine) There's also growing interest in whether the Malayalam, Hindi, and Telugu versions will be filmed simultaneously. While the director said that it's too early to confirm parallel shoots due to actors' availability, with Mohanlal, Ajay Devgn, and Venkatesh leading the Malayalam, Hindi, and Telugu versions, respectively. The team is seriously considering a simultaneous added, "There was a request from their side for a simultaneous release. So, we have been discussing the prospect of releasing the films simultaneously, not just the Malayalam and Hindi versions, but the Telugu one as well. In this OTT age, they feel that releasing on different dates might reduce the film's impact in the other languages."'Drishyam (2013) showed how Mohanlal's character Georgekutty tried to protect his family after an accidental death in self-defence. In the second part, which came out on OTT in 2021, trouble increases when a new witness comes forward. The story of the third part is still being kept a secret.

Jeethu Joseph confirms no crossovers in ‘Drishyam 3,' but THIS character may return
(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) As the most loved thriller film 'Drishyam' is all set for its third part, the rumors are rife that the film may include some of the most popular characters, such as Sam Iyer (from 'Memories'), or even Sethurama Iyer may appear in it. While such a thought is interesting, the director Jeethu Joseph may have some other plans. Jeethu Joseph reveals—no such crossovers Talking to SillyMonks Mollywood, the 'Drishyam 3' director confirmed that there will be no crossover of characters from other films in the third part. He said, 'Even my daughter asked me about such possibilities of having the characters Sethurama Iyer, Sam Alex, and others in 'Drishyam.'' I clarified by saying that if there is a third part for 'Drishyam,' there will be no way that a new character from other films may appear in it.' Jeethu Joseph added that if there is the inclusion of any other film characters in the third part, then 'Drishyam' will lose its charm. 'Drishyam is George Kutty's. Maybe the character Sahadevan can return, because he is already in the universe and not an outsider.' He said that he doesn't want to look at the market value possibilities when he is writing a story organically. Mohanlal Confirms Drishyam 3 Release |Georgekutty Is Back 'Drishyam 3' announcement On the last day, Mohanlal officially announced the third part of 'Drishyam.' Sharing a teaser on Twitter, the actor wrote, 'October 2025—the camera turns back to Georgekutty. The past never stays silent. #Drishyam3." The caption hints that there are more challenges ahead for George Kutty, where he has to go to any extent to save his family. On the other hand, Mohanlal's recently released film 'Thudarum' was also told in a 'Drishyam'-style 'narrative, and it received many positive reviews from the audiences and turned out to be a superhit.
