MLB's Best Team Gets 'Big Upgrade'; Tigers Outfielder Activated For Season Debut
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
One of the biggest surprises of this season has been the fact that the best team in baseball so far is the Detroit Tigers. Not only did they head into Friday's home game against the Cleveland Guardians at 33-18 -- an MLB-best .647 winning percentage -- the Tigers reached the top of ESPN's power rankings released on Thursday.
Detroit started the season at No. 18 in the ESPN rankings, but has vaulted up the chart, winning 15 of its last 21 games.

HOUSTON, TEXAS - OCTOBER 02: Matt Vierling #8 of the Detroit Tigers reacts after striking out against the Houston Astros in the first inning during Game Two of the Wild Card Series at Minute Maid Park on October 02, 2024 in Houston, Texas. More"Plenty is going right for the Tigers: the resurgence of Javier Baez ... in center field; Tarik Skubal's sterling defense of his AL Cy Young Award; former No. 1 picks Spencer Torkelson and Casey Mize finding their way; and the bullpen's dominance," wrote the ESPN power rankings staff. "Lost in those headlines is Gleyber Torres having a solid season, continuing where he left off down the stretch in 2024 with the Yankees."
And yet, the Tigers have done it all while dealing with a series of injuries that would slow down many teams. Their $15 million free agent pitching acquisition Alex Cobb has yet to take the mound. Centerfielder Parker Meadows has also been out since spring training. Torres missed almost two weeks with an oblique strain. Those names are just a few of the Tigers' walking wounded.
But one outfielder (who doubles as a third baseman), Matt Vierling, is finally ready to take his place in the Detroit lineup. After missing the entire season so far with a right rotator cuff strain, the 28-year-old, fifth-year player was finally activated from the injured list on Friday.

Vierling played an important role in last season's Tigers comeback, getting into the playoffs despite being two games under .500 as late as Aug. 22. With 16 home runs and a .735 OPS, Vierling's 3.0 WAR was second-highest of any position player on last year's Detroit team.
Other than 32-year-old veteran Javy Baez, who has converted to a center fielder due to the multiple outfield injuries and has so far produced his best performance at the plate since 2021, the Detroit outfield has been a patchwork product. Vierling and Meadows have missed time with injuries, and Manuel Margot and Wenceel Perez have served IL stints as well.
Despite being eligible to play, Vierling was not in the Tigers' starting lineup on Friday.

Red Sox Predicted to Replace Jarren Duran With Power Bat After Trade Rumors
Red Sox Predicted to Replace Jarren Duran With Power Bat After Trade Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Trade rumors have been flying about Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran. They have only ramped up since Rafael Devers was dealt to the San Francisco Giant, as the organization now appears to be heading towards a youth movement at the MLB Trade Deadline. Advertisement According to Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo, the Red Sox may have their replacement for Duran waiting in the draft at the 15th overall spot. That player? Auburn University's Ike Irish. Irish is a powerful left-handed bat who has proven ability at the plate against top-tier collegiate pitching in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). He stands 6'2", weighing 201 lbs. The junior out of Hudsonville, Michigan is the highest projected outfielder and catcher among both high school and collegiate prospects in Mayo and Callis' mock draft. "Boston can stick Irish in the outfield and let his athleticism and bat play," Callis and Mayo wrote. Auburn Tigers' Ike Irish (18) celebrates after hitting a double against the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils during the NCAA Regional Baseball Tournament at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Ala., on Friday May 30, Welsh / Advertiser / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images With 24 doubles in his freshman year, 14 home runs in his sophomore season and then 19 home runs in his junior campaign, Irish has the power and an approach at the plate that should translate well to the professional level. Advertisement His career batting average is .350, with a .435 on-base percentage. In 2024 he slugged a monster .710, with progression towards that number after each of his first two seasons. currently has Irish ranked as the 21st overall prospect in the draft, but once the College World Series concludes the rankings could be updated. The Red Sox could use a more polished bat out of the draft, and the college prospect could fill a need at a corner outfield position. The 2025 MLB Draft is being held on July 13 and 14. Five things to know about Chase Burns facing the Yankees in his MLB debut
Cincinnati Reds top prospect Chase Burns, the second overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft, is set to make his MLB debut Tuesday against Carlos Rodon and the New York Yankees after just 13 minor-league starts. Burns made his pro debut in April for the Single-A Dayton Dragons. He was promoted to Triple-A Louisville on June 9 and made two starts for the Bats. Advertisement In May, Burns climbed 12 spots to No. 11 in MLB Pipeline's latest top 100 rankings. Reds top pitching prospect Chase Burns What to know about Burns facing the Yankees in his first big-league start: Burns is set to become the first pitcher from the 2024 first round to debut. Four players selected in the first round of the 2024 draft - the Athletics' Nick Kurtz, the Royals' Jac Caglianone, the Angels' Christian Moore and the Astros' Cam Smith (drafted by the Cubs) - have made their MLB debuts. But Burns' start against the Yankees would be the first in the big-leaguers by a pitcher selected in the 2024 first round. Kurtz, the fourth overall selection in 2024, was Burns' teammate at Wake Forest. Burns is the same age Rhett Lowder was when he debuted for the Reds in 2024. Lowder, the 7th overall pick in the 2023 draft who also pitched at Wake Forest, was 22 years, 175 days old when he made his big-league debut for Cincinnati on August 30, 2024, against the Brewers. Advertisement Burns' age, as of his expected June 24 MLB debut, will be 22 years, 159 days. Burns and Lowder were not teammates for the Demon Deacons. While Lowder pitched for three seasons at Wake, Burns only pitched there for one season, after pitching his first two college seasons for the Tennessee Volunteers. Burns' last Triple-A start before his promotion came against the Yankees' Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. In his second start for Louisville, Burns impressed against the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate, striking out seven while allowing just three hits and a run with no walks in seven innings in the Bats' 8-1 win. Only one player on the Yankees' active roster is younger than Burns. Outfielder Jasson Dominguez was born February 7, 2003, less than one month after Burns' birthdate. Advertisement Dominguez, who debuted in 2023 at age 20, didn't face the Reds during his first three MLB seasons. Aaron Judge has homered each of the past three seasons against the Reds. Burns is looking to help Cincinnati hold Judge in check. Judge entered June 22 with 27 home runs, trailing only the Seattle Mariners' Cal Raleigh for the MLB lead this season. In 41 career plate appearances against Cincinnati, Judge has batted .324 with three home runs. Of the three pitchers Judge homered against - Jeff Hoffman, Ben Lively and Sam Moll - only Moll still plays for the Reds.
