Chicago White Sox activate OF Austin Slater from the 10-day injured list
Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox activated Austin Slater from the 10-day injured list on Monday after the outfielder made a speedy recovery from a knee injury.
Slater, 32, got the start in left field for Chicago's series opener against the Seattle Mariners. To make room for Slater on the 26-man roster, infielder/outfielder Brooks Baldwin was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte.
Slater had surgery on April 15 to repair a meniscus tear in his right knee. He batted .385 (5 for 13) over four games in a rehab assignment with Charlotte.
'So imaging showed I had a slight tear,' Slater said. "So I went under and had surgery and that was almost five weeks ago. So way faster than I thought. I think when I initially hurt it, I was like, 'Oh, that's my season.' That was my initial reaction, so pleasantly surprised by the recovery time I would say.'
Slater hit .250 (5 for 20) with a homer in his first eight games with Chicago. He agreed to a $1.75 million, one-year contract with the White Sox in November.
'Anytime you miss an extended period, you know, and watching the guys, you just want to get back out there to help any way you can,' Slater said. "So that's something I've been thinking about a lot. Hopefully I can go do that.'
Baldwin, a 12th-round pick in the 2022 amateur draft, made his big league debut last year. He is batting .215 with three homers and 16 RBIs in 44 games with the White Sox this season.
'With some of these guys coming back and getting healthy, it's going to be a little less playing time,' manager Will Venable said. 'And he's at a point in his career where he really needs to play. And we want to expose him to center field a little bit more, some more opportunity on the dirt. We just think really highly of him and want to give him a chance to have everyday at-bats.'

Diamondbacks lookahead: Time to clean up on MLB's bottom-feeders, long homestand starts
The Arizona Diamondbacks conclude a three-game series in Denver on June 22, against the Colorado Rockies, with right-hander Brandon Pfaadt looking for his ninth win of the season. Then it's on to Chicago to play three games with the White Sox before hosting the Miami Marlins. All three opponents held down last place in their respective divisions as of June 20. Advertisement Arizona faces Chicago for the only time this season June 23-25. The White Sox had Major League Baseball's worst record last season, 41-121, beating out the 1962 New York Mets (120 losses) for the worst record in the modern era. As of June 19, the White Sox were already more than halfway to that win total with 23 wins. Chicago entered its June 19 doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals on a six-game losing streak, however. The White Sox have had a revolving door with their pitching staff, much like the Diamondbacks, with injuries and ineffectiveness leading to roster moves and call-ups from the minors. The Diamondbacks are 17-7 all-time against the White Sox, 9-3 in Chicago and have won every series against the Sox since 2014, five in all. Advertisement Right-hander Shane Smith, 25, is scheduled to start the series opener against the Diamondbacks. He has been the team's most productive starter; his 2.85 ERA and 1.22 WHIP led the rotation entering play June 20. Former Dodgers prospect Miguel Vargas has been Chicago's most productive hitter. He's the only White Sox player with as many as 10 home runs. After finishing their three-city road trip June 25 in Chicago, the Diamondbacks have an off day before returning to Chase Field for a long homestand. Arizona begins the 10-game set with three against the Miami Marlins, a team the Diamondbacks swept in a three-game series in Miami earlier this season. The Marlins series is June 27-29 at Chase Field. This article originally appeared on Arizona Republic: Looking ahead to Diamondbacks' next two series

Elly De La Cruz vomits, Trent Thornton has to be helped from field as MLB games disrupted by extreme heat
Soaring temperatures throughout the United States wreaked havoc across Major League Baseball on Saturday, with Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz and Seattle Mariners reliever Trent Thornton both falling ill in their respective games. De La Cruz vomited in the outfield during the fourth inning of the Reds' 6-5 extra-innings defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, where the temperature at first pitch was recorded at 92 degrees Fahrenheit (33 degrees Celsius). Grounds crew cleaned up the area after the Dominican, who ultimately decided to continue, was tended to by a trainer. 'I actually watched him,' said Cincinnati manager Terry Francona. 'He drank a bunch of water. I mean a bunch! And then he went right out and got rid of it.' De La Cruz's decision to stay in the game paid off in the seventh. With the score tied at 2-2, the shortstop got ahold of Steven Matz's 85 mph changeup and crushed it 435 feet to left center for a two-run home run. Later, in the Mariners' 10-7 defeat to the Chicago Cubs, Trent Thornton had to be treated by emergency medical technicians after he began suffering from heat exhaustion. With the heat at Wrigley Field having reached 94 degrees Fahrenheit (34 degrees Celsius) at first pitch, reliever Thornton pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings but had to crouch down behind the mound in the eighth after giving up a walk to Ian Happ. Mariners manager Dan Wilson and assistant athletic trainer Kevin Orloski helped Thornton off the field, and the 31-year-old took an ice bath shortly after. 'It was a scary moment, for sure,' said Wilson, per 'He battled hard. But just really glad that he's feeling a little bit better now and should be OK.' The incident came after home plate umpire Chad Whitson had already left the game after falling ill at the conclusion of the fifth inning, causing a 10-minute delay and Dexter Kelley to move from second to behind the dish. 'He came in, same kind of thing. Just was not feeling well,' said Wilson, per AP. 'Threw up a few times in the dugout and then they came and took care of him from there. The heat was a real thing today, for sure.' An MLB spokesperson said Whitson had been cleared to work third base for Sunday's rubber match after he felt better on Saturday night, per AP. A member of staff at Wrigley Field also suffered a heat-related medical issue after the game had finished, a Cubs spokesperson told AP. The individual was able to walk off the field on his own. With temperatures expected to be even higher in Chicago for the final game of the series on Sunday, the Cubs plan to bring in a city bus to use as a cooling station next to the stadium – in addition to the cooling and misting stations that were already present for Saturday's game. The Milwaukee Brewers' 9-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field was played under an excessive heat warning, but no players were noticeably ill. Much of the eastern half of the US is entering what is predicted to be a period of dangerous heat next week. Over 250 daily temperature records could be broken on Monday and Tuesday.
