Deadly Russian attack hits eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv

The first wave on Ukraine's second-largest city was a large Russian drone-and-missile attack in the early hours.

In the afternoon, Russia dropped aerial bombs on the city centre, killing at least one person and wounding five more, Kharkiv's mayor said.
The warring sides also accused each other of trying to sabotage a planned prisoner exchange, nearly a week after Kyiv embarrassed the Kremlin with a surprise drone attack on military airfields deep inside Russia.
Saturday's barrage – the latest in near daily widescale attacks on Ukraine – included aerial glide bombs that have become part of a fierce Russian onslaught in the all-out war, which began on February 24 2022.
Ukraine's air force said that Russia struck with 215 missiles and drones overnight, and Ukrainian air defences shot down 87 drones and seven missiles.

Several other areas in Ukraine were also hit, including the regions of Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, and the city of Ternopil, Ukrainian foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said in an X post.
'To put an end to Russia's killing and destruction, more pressure on Moscow is required, as are more steps to strengthen Ukraine,' he said.
The Russian defence ministry said its forces carried out a night-time strike on Ukrainian military targets, including ammunition depots, drone assembly workshops, and weaponry repair stations. There was no comment from Moscow on the reports of casualties in Kharkiv.
Kharkiv's mayor, Ihor Terekhov, said that the strikes also damaged 18 apartment buildings and 13 private homes. Mr Terekhov said that it was 'the most powerful attack' on the city since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion.

Kharkiv's regional governor, Oleh Syniehubov, said the morning's attacks saw two districts in the city struck with three missiles, five aerial glide bombs and 48 drones. Among the wounded were two children, a baby boy and a 14-year-old girl, he added.
Six people are believed to be trapped under the rubble of an industrial facility in Kharkiv's Kyiv district, The Kharkiv prosecutor's office said in a statement on Telegram. Contact with those trapped was lost and rescue attempts have been ongoing since early afternoon, it said, without naming the facility.
On Saturday afternoon, Russian aerial bombs struck Kharkiv again, killing at least one person and wounding five others, the mayor said.

The morning strikes also wounded two people in the Dnipropetrovsk province further south, according to local governor Serhii Lysak.
Meanwhile, Russia's defence ministry said that its forces shot down 36 Ukrainian drones overnight, over the country's south and west, including near the capital. Drone debris wounded two civilians in the suburbs of Moscow, governor Andrei Vorobyov reported.
A US-led diplomatic push for a settlement has brought two rounds of direct peace talks between delegations from Russia and Ukraine, though the negotiations delivered no significant breakthroughs. But both sides remain far apart on their terms for an end to the fighting.

Russia 'preparing new military operations in Europe', Zelensky warns

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Russia is preparing military operations beyond the borders of Ukraine, according to a report from its military intelligence chief President Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed Ukraine has intelligence that Vladimir Putin's Russia is preparing military operations in Europe. Mr Zelensky made the comments following a report from Kyrylo Budanov, the chief of Ukraine 's military intelligence, and said the 'Russian leadership' is 'preparing new military operations on European territory'. The Ukrainian president said Ukraine is 'preparing joint decisions for defence, in particular with the United Kingdom and the European Union ' and that allies would be informed. He did not reveal further details contained in the report or expand on what 'evidence' was included. ‌ ‌ Details of planned operations by Russia, when they are expected or countries that could be targeted were not shared by Zelensky. In is comments made on the social media app X, he also said Ukraine is "observing a continued intellectual decline within the Russian leadership". Mr Zelensky also praised economic sanctions on Russia, saying they were causing "tangible damage". This week, Putin received a stark warning from Russian economy minister Maxim Reshetnikov, who said Russia's economy is "on the verge" of transitioning to a recession. Putin, in a speech at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, mentioned the recession warnings but emphasised that 'it mustn't be allowed'. Ukraine has previously warned of the potential for Russian aggression beyond Ukraine, with the chief of Ukraine's foreign intelligence, the SZRU, suggesting in May that Russia would be able to rearm between two to four years after the war in Ukraine ends. Similar comments came from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the beginning of June. Speaking at Chatham House, Mr Rutte said that 'danger will not disappear even when the war in Ukraine ends,' The Guardian reported. The Mirror has approached the UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD) for comment. Following the publication of the strategic defence review (SDR) this month, defence secretary John Healey said plans to boost the UK's military muscle is a 'message to Moscow'. ‌ The Government has pledged £1.5 billion to set up at least six factories, and will support the procurement of up to 7,000 UK-built long-range weapons in response to the strategic defence review (SDR) to be published on Monday. The new funding will see UK munitions spend hit £6 billion during this parliament and support around 1,800 jobs throughout the country. Sir Keir Starmer has called the review a 'radical blueprint' and pledged a 'wave of investments' in shipbuilding, drone technology and cyber defences. A cyber command to counter cyber attacks from state-linked sources is being set up as part of the review. The PM has committed to spend 2.5 percent of gross domestic product on defence from April 2027, with a goal of increasing that to three percent over the next parliament – a timetable which could stretch to 2034. At the same time, Mr Rutte is pushing NATO members to reach five percent of GDP although he has given no deadline for the target. Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick welcomed the Government's pledge to increase defence spending but said he was 'sceptical' as to whether the Chancellor would make good on the plans. Mr Jenrick said the UK should reach three percent of GDP spending on defence 'within this parliament'.

Briton arrested after Disneyland Paris ‘mock wedding' with girl, 9

A British man was arrested on Sunday after an alleged attempt to stage a mock wedding with a nine-year-old girl before a crowd of 100 guests at Disneyland Paris. The man, 22, was allegedly the 'groom' at a bizarre staged ceremony at dawn on Saturday in front of the Sleeping Beauty castle in the theme park 20 miles east of Paris. The aim was to make a video for social media, he told police. Disney staff intervened to halt the action and called police when they spotted the girl, a nine-year-old Ukrainian, in a bridal dress. The organisers had booked the park — which is available to rent outside public visiting hours — for a function that they said would be a genuine wedding ceremony. The 'guests' were recruited online through adverts seeking 200 adults and 100 children aged between five and 15 to play the guests at a 'rehearsal' for a wedding at Disneyland. Video obtained by BFM TV showed about 100 seated guests awaiting the ceremony as a female violin trio played at dawn before a stage strewn with flowers. The event had cost the organiser €130,000, BFM said. Alexandre Verney, assistant prosecutor for the Seine-et-Marne département, said: 'Four people were arrested and questioned: the groom, who was believed to be the organiser of the event and is presumed to be British and aged 22; the mother of the child, a 41-year-old Ukrainian woman; and two Latvian nationals aged 55 and 24. 'It wasn't a wedding but a staged wedding that was to be filmed with a hundred extras. They privatised Disneyland, claiming that it was a real marriage.' The mother and the older Latvian were released after a medical examination of the girl showed no mistreatment or constraint. The Briton and the other Latvian were held for questioning over possible money laundering and fraud offences, the prosecutor's office said. Disney thanked its staff for their action in halting the event. A witness told Le Parisien: 'We were not told at any time that it was about a film shoot. We all thought we were going to part of a wedding. Everyone was stunned. No one expected this. Disneyland does things very well. They immediately cancelled when they understood that the bride was a kid. We were sickened by that.' The extras said they had been driven from central Paris on buses at 5am and given pink bracelets with the names of the 'bride and groom' printed on them. One of the extras, named Yeleen, who went to the ceremony with her daughter, said: 'I saw a little girl dressed in white. I saw her hair prepared with curls and a lady picking her up in her arms. At that moment, I was shocked. I realised when I saw the child. It was atrocious.'
