Manchester City and England goalkeeper Khiara Keating has had the charges of possession of the Class C drug nitrous oxide against her dropped.
The crown prosecution service (CPS) confirmed to The Athletic the case against Keating and her mother Nicola has been discontinued as there was not enough evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction.

Keating told the BBC: 'I'm relieved the charges have been dropped. As I've always said, I did nothing wrong.
'It's been a difficult time, but I've always known the truth. Now I'm just looking forward to focusing fully on the Euros and spending time with my family.'
Keating, 20, and her mother Nicola, 49, had been charged with possessing a class C controlled drug on June 18, 2024. The charges related to an alleged incident on Queens Road in Manchester.
They both appeared in court on July 23 and were granted unconditional bail.
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, became classified as a Class C drug and possession was made illegal by the UK government in November 2023.
Keating will be part of England's squad at the 2025 European Championship after being selected by Sarina Wiegman as one of three goalkeepers alongside Hannah Hampton and Anna Moorhouse. She was called up to the national side for the first time in October 2023 but is yet to make her senior debut.
The City academy graduate made 12 Women's Super League (WSL) appearances last season, having enjoyed a breakthrough 2023-24 campaign. She won the league's Golden Glove award after establishing herself as City's first-choice goalkeeper, keeping nine clean sheets.

Sam Kerr's teaser sends fans wild despite sad omission as Matildas favourite returns

Sam Kerr appears to be nearing a return after sharing footage of her back in training despite being left out of Joe Montemurro's Matildas squad for his first-game in charge. There is plenty of excitement around the Matildas with new coach Montemurro naming a large 33-strong squad for games against Slovenia and Panama. Interestingly, 14 A-League Women players joined the squad but Women's Super League stars and current captain Steph Catley, forward Caitlin Foord and midfielder Katrina Gorry will not feature in the four-game window having taken leave after a long season. However, Kerr was once again among the absentees having suffered setback during her ACL rehab the other week. Kerr has not played football in more than 16 months after tearing her ACL during training for her club side Chelsea. And earlier this month, it was revealed Kerr underwent surgery on a separate injury. Little is known about her recovery timeline, with Kerr and partner Kristie Mews recently taking a break and holidaying in the off-season. However, the Matildas superstar handed fans an update having posted a photo of her back training and running with Chelsea during training. Although she was once again excluded from the Matildas squad with fans increasingly interested over when she will make a comeback. The Matildas superstar has been undergoing her recovery and was a hope to line-up for Chelsea, before their record breaking Women's Super League season came to an end. Although this didn't come to fruition with the plan for Kerr to remain in England and continue her recovery with Chelsea. 🥹🥹 — jurídico sam kerr (@m4yaramonster) June 19, 2025 Light at the end of the tunnel for next season 😍😍😍 — ℜ u k ǝ K v ǝ l l  🇬🇧🇨🇦 (@Ruke_kvell) June 19, 2025 When is Sam Kerr going to return to playing football? — The Australian's pie chart creator (@Elfvandel20) June 20, 2025 While Kerr remains out, Mackenzie Arnold and Hayley Raso both return from injury. The Tottenham winger was missed by the Matildas in recent games with her creativity a major loss for the side. Montemurro is looking to improve the Matildas and find some results with Australia's national women's team dropping to their equal-worst position on the FIFA rankings. The World No.16 side has struggled in the last 12 months having been knocked out in a disastrous Olympics and SheBelieves Cup campaign. "When you have this amount of time, you can start to infiltrate some good ideas and make a statement in terms of the way we want to play," Montemurro said. "We still want to win football matches. We still want to show you who we are as a footballing nation. But more importantly, to really instil some identity, and really instil some belief in this team that you know going forward."

Potential record deal puts Elliott's name back in the headlines as Albion are linked

Harvey Elliott, pictured with Yasin Ayari, could be on the move (Image: Simon Dack) Harvey Elliott's name is being linked with Albion again – after Liverpool clinched a record deal. The champions' move for Florian Wirtz will set them back an initial £100 million. That will become a British record £116 million if various clauses are met. Advertisement It also appears to affect Elliott's potential to play significant minutes for the Reds. Albion were believed to be interested in Elliott during the January transfer window and probably before that. That might at least partly explain why The Sun report him to be of interest to the Seagulls in the current window. He would command a sizeable fee and comes with some uncertainty over what he can produce in the Premier League on a consistent basis. But Elliott, who is currently with England under-21s at the Euros, has shown plenty of promise. He scored for Liverpool at the Amex towards the end of the season. Advertisement There is no suggestion that Albion have bid for Elliott but there is a theory the presence of his former Anfield mentor James Milner could help persuade the 22-year-old to move. Albion have an array of options in attacking midfield areas but plenty of outward activity is expected during the summer transfer window.

Manchester woman incompetent to stand trial in boyfriend's killing

A 24-year-old woman accused of shooting and killing her boyfriend last December in Manchester has been deemed incompetent to stand trial. Alicia Castagnino Borges Alicia Castagnino Borges Alicia Castagnino Borges faces two counts of second-degree murder for knowingly and recklessly causing the death of Brennan Pelio, 27, by shooting him at a condominium on Silver Street. An order for a competency hearing was made on the day she was arraigned in Manchester District Court. Judge Daniel Will determined she was unfit for trial after considering a 24-page motion filed by the Attorney General's Office and agreed on by defense, according to court records. The document was sealed and could not be viewed by the public. A status hearing on the case took place in Hillsborough County Superior earlier this week. 'The court determines that bona fide doubt exists regarding the defendant's competency to stand trial,' the order reads. Castagnino Borges is referred to the forensic examiner for further evaluation. The evaluation is supposed to be done within 45 days, according to state law. Defense counsel must provide all medical, mental health and educational records from the three years. A restorability hearing is set to take place on March 5, 2026. Manchester police responded to the condo around 10 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, after receiving a call reporting a suspicious death and found Pelio dead from an apparent gunshot wound, prosecutors said. Castagnino Borges lived in the building where the shooting occurred — Twin Towers Condominiums at 470 Silver St. City property records show Pelio owned the same condo unit that Castagnino gave officers as her address. An autopsy determined that Pelio died of a single gunshot wound to the head. Castagnino Borges, who is being held at a secure unit at the state prison, is represented by lawyer Charles Keefe, according to court documents.
