Regional imbalance report to be based on sectoral indices
Ballari: Prof M Govind Rao, who chairs the Karnataka Regional Imbalance Redressal Committee, indicated that an assessment of the district's development patterns and growth opportunities will be conducted.
The committee will present their findings to the govt, incorporating various sectoral indicators from the district.
He conveyed these details concerning the meeting held on Wednesday evening at the DC's office with district heads, which aimed to address regional disparities at the district level. He highlighted that this initiative would meet the objectives outlined in Dr DM Nanjundappa's 2002 report.
According to Prof Rao, the committee will utilise an index to evaluate the progress of regions since the implementation of the Nanjundappa Report, as increasing imbalances may cause certain areas to lag.
For underperforming regions, the committee will identify the root causes. Their assessment will encompass improvements in per capita income, education, health, and additional sectors.
The state govt formed a committee of economic experts in Sept 2024 to address regional imbalances. This group will assess development across various sectors, including agriculture, industry, economic infrastructure, social infrastructure, and financial and technological infrastructure, creating an index before submitting their report to the govt.

Banks must protect govt incentive funds from loan deductions: Melukote MLA
Mandya: Melukote MLA Darshan Puttannaiah urged that bank managers write to their central offices requesting the installation of software that prevents govt incentive funds from being deducted for loan repayments. Once a loan is taken from a bank, the EMI amount is automatically deducted from the account on the scheduled date each month, he said. Speaking at a meeting with various bank managers at the DC's office here, he said when the govt provides incentive funds to farmers or citizens, and they are automatically adjusted towards loan EMIs, people have to visit the bank and request a reversal to their subsidy accounts. However, only about 3% of the population have the capacity to approach banks and raise such issues, which is why a software solution is essential. He emphasized that banks function because of customers. Many poor farmers in rural areas are bank customers, and bank staff must treat them with respect. Deputy commissioner Kumara said various govt-provided benefits—like social pensions, milk incentives, Anna Bhagya, Gruha Lakshmi funds, MGNREGA wages, and crop loss compensation—should not be deducted for loan repayments, out of humanitarian concern. He urged the bank staff to communicate in Kannada, especially since Mandya is a district of farmers. Though many bank officials and managers know Kannada, they often speak in English or Hindi. This attitude must change, he said. He also pointed out the scheme that offers a 3% interest rebate to farmers who repay their crop loans within the stipulated time, and asked the banks to make farmers aware of this benefit.

Compensation given to families affected by fatal tree accidents in Chikkamagaluru
Chikkamagaluru: District minister KJ George expressed his condolences for the death of Anil Pais, 50, from Bilukoppa and handed over a cheque of Rs 5 lakh to his family members. Pais died after a branch of a tree fell on him near Balehonnur a few days ago. Geroge visited Pais's house to offer support. George said that no financial assistance can truly replace a lost life. This support is a gesture of compassion aimed at providing the family with some emotional strength during this difficult time. Currently, a compensation of Rs 5 lakh is being provided by the deputy commissioner. The construction work of the deceased Anil Pais's house stopped midway. Earlier, the gram panchayat provided funds for the construction of the house. MLA Rajegowda has promised to complete the house construction using his funds. Anil Pais had two children studying in govt schools. The minister stated that the DC would be requested to ensure appropriate support for their future education. The minister also gave compensation to the family of Rathnakar, who died when a tree collapsed on his autorickshaw near Meguru Hosathota in Koppa taluk. Order to remove dangerous trees George directed the forest department officials to clear any dangerous trees located along roadsides to prevent further loss of life.

Flying squad to inspect PDS in H'bag
1 2 Hazaribag: The district administration on Friday formed a flying squad to inspect public distribution shops (PDS) across the district to check for irregularities in the distribution of food grains, dhoti-saree, salt and sugar. The squad will comprise block development officer, circle officer and other officials. and will inspect the e-POS machines, weighing machines and their register maintenance, food grain stocks, distribution process and information boards at the shops. The team will also listen to the grievances of the beneficiaries. District authorities said the team will also inspect the warehouses of the State Food Corporation and their storage systems, operations as per the SOP, stock verification as well as lifting process of food grains. "This initiative aims to ensure that all beneficiaries under the National Food Security Scheme get ration regularly as per the standards," the DC said.
