A leading Indian defence company — Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), known for making Akashteer — is once again making headlines by playing a crucial role in Project Kusha – an initiative to develop a powerful air defence system like the Russian-made S-400. The ambitious project aims to neutralise aerial threats like missiles, suicide drones, and aircraft attacks. Notably, Project Kusha is led by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
As a development partner, BEL is working closely with the DRDO and sharing its insights to the design and production of crucial subsystems like – radars and control systems. BEL Chairman and Managing Director Manoj Jain, during the company's March quarter earnings call, confirmed that BEL is jointly developing several components of Project Kusha. As per reports, the prototype phase of Project Kusha is likely to begin in the coming months with BEL is working to build the first working model within 12-18 months. Once developed, the system will undergo severe trials and testing which will take 1-3 years.
A decision on the system integrator(s) is yet to be made. BEL expressed confidence in their selection, should the authorities opt for two integrators.
Project Kusha is designed to fill the gap between India's MR-SAM (Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile), and Russian-made S-400. MR-SAM has a range of 80 km, whereas S-400 covers up to 400 km. Project Kusha: Three Types Of Interceptor Missiles

It is worth mentioning that the project was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security in 2022. The budget of the project was Rs 21,700 crore. The budget was sanctioned to build five squadrons for the IAF.
Another major feature of the project is its naval version, which is capable of destroying anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs). With this the Indian Navy will have a powerful tool to protect its frontline warships. This new system will enhance the navy's defences by complementing existing systems like Barak-8 and the Naval Ballistic Missile Defence System, creating a more robust overall defence.

UP govt revises SOP to boost financial autonomy of urban local bodies
The Uttar Pradesh Urban Development Department has revised the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) outlining financial and administrative powers of urban local bodies (ULBs) in the state. Under the new guidelines, Nagar Panchayats will now be empowered to independently sanction development projects up to Rs 1 crore, while municipal Councils can undertake projects worth up to Rs 2 crore. This marks a significant jump from the earlier limit of Rs 40 lakh set in the 2021 SOP. Officials said the updated SOP is part of a broader set of reforms aimed at promoting decentralisation, improving transparency, and strengthening urban governance. One of the key changes allows the use of interlocking tiles on roads up to 3.75 metres in width, an infrastructure upgrade that aligns with modern urban planning needs. In addition to enhancing financial autonomy, the revised SOP has also introduced stronger accountability mechanisms. If a construction project is found to be substandard, 50% of the cost recovery will be borne by the contractor, while the remaining 50% will be recovered from the concerned engineers and administrative officials of the respective ULB. The district magistrate will oversee this recovery process. Urban local bodies have also been instructed to maintain ward-wise road directories and conduct GIS mapping of existing infrastructure to aid in more efficient future planning. 'It is a step towards reforms and would improve the quality and effectiveness of urban governance and at the same time increase transparency. These revised SOP norms also aim to promote decentralization,' claimed Amrit Abhijat, Principal Secretary, Urban Development Department.

The Israeli military claimed responsibility for the strike, saying it also targeted missile launchers in Isfahan and Ahvaz. The timing of the attack – barely hours after the United States struck three Iranian nuclear sites – has raised serious fears of a looming nuclear crisis. While Iranian officials have yet to confirm any damage to the nuclear plant itself, concerns are mounting. Built with Russian assistance, the facility operates using nuclear fuel supplied by Moscow. The same fuel is shipped back to Russia after use to mitigate proliferation risks. As of now, Iranian authorities report no radiation leaks. But the attack is being viewed in international circles as a dangerously provocative move. Rafael Grossi, the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), had previously warned that a direct strike on the Bushehr plant could trigger catastrophic consequences. 'A hit on the facility could lead to a massive release of radioactivity, affecting not just Iran but its neighbours as well,' he had said while addressing the UN Security Council. Experts agree that if a direct strike compromises the reactor, the fallout could mirror nuclear disasters of the past. The comparison many are drawing is to Chernobyl. In that 1986 tragedy, a botched test led to an explosion and fire at a reactor in Ukraine, spreading radioactive contamination across Europe and causing long-term health damage to thousands. According to international nuclear safety protocols, any such incident at Bushehr would demand swift protective actions. These would likely include mass evacuations, iodine distribution, food and water restrictions and large-scale radiation monitoring across several hundred kilometres. Russia has issued its own warnings. With more than 600 personnel, including 250 permanent staff, stationed at the Bushehr facility, Moscow had reportedly sought assurances from Israel for their safety. Rosatom chief Alexey Likhachev said any damage to the site could unleash a disaster on the scale of Chernobyl. The Israeli military had previously claimed its mention of Bushehr as a target was a mistake. But the latest strikes tell a different story. As images of smoke rising over Bushehr surface on social media and satellite data, the world is left to reckon with the possibility that a new chapter in warfare – one where nuclear power plants become battlefronts – may be closer than ever imagined. For now, the region holds its breath. Radiation levels remain normal. But questions remain – how close did the world come to a nuclear nightmare? And what happens if the next missile does not miss?

Prayagraj's women lead the way with 46.71% workdays under MNREGA
1 2 Prayagraj: The state government's relentless efforts towards women's empowerment and employment have yielded impressive results in Sangam City. Under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), women's participation in total workdays generated has reached an encouraging 46.71 per cent. A total of 1.60 crore jobs (manav diwas) have so far been created under the MNREGA scheme across the state in the financial year 2025-26, out of which women contributed to the creation of more than 72 lakh jobs. The contribution of about 45 per cent is the highest so far. Interestingly, women are also proving helpful for MNREGA management and supervision. The number of women mates employed under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) has increased in the current financial year. Over 5,500 women mates have been employed, marking a 3 percent rise from 41.87 per cent in 2024-25. Deputy commissioner (MNREGA) Gulab Chandra said, "As many as 6,112,887 jobs (manav diwas) have so far been created in the Prayagraj district during the financial year 2024-25. The percentage of workdays of women workers in the total workdays created has been 46.71%, which is more than the state average."
