Australia's Super Netball goes global in deal with Whoopi Goldberg's AWSN
SYDNEY, June 20 (Reuters) - Australia's Super Netball league will be broadcast to more than 65 countries over the next three years after Netball Australia struck a deal with Whoopi Goldberg's All Women's Sports Network (AWSN), the governing body said on Friday.
Netball, one of a few sports created exclusively for women and girls, is the most popular participation sport for females in Australia with Netball Australia estimating there are up to a million players across the country.
The professional Super Netball league, which was launched in 2017, has eight teams and 41 of its games, including the playoffs and finals, will now be broadcast on AWSN.
"This breakthrough deal puts netball on screens across the globe and cements our place at the forefront of women's sport," Netball Australia chief executive Stacey West said in a statement.
"AWSN shares our vision of taking women's sport to new heights. Together, we're creating a platform for our athletes and game to shine like never before."
Co-founded by Oscar-winning actor and comedian Goldberg, AWSN was launched late last year as the first global media channel dedicated exclusively to showcasing women's sports.
"I am so proud to be thanking you for joining us on AWSN," Goldberg said in a video message to Super Netball released by Netball Australia.
"I see that your fans are really loving you, so we want to make sure that we put you everywhere in the world so that everybody knows about you."

It would mark the first time the Aussie rock band has returned to their home turf since the 2015 Rock or Bust tour. The Power Up Tour is in support of the band's seventeenth studio album Power Up, released in 2020. The group kicked-off their global shows in Germany in May 2024 with confirmed legs throughout Europe and North America. AC/DC have yet to confirm a tour in Australia this year. Daily Mail Australia has reached out to the MCG for further comment. AC/DC were last rumoured to be announcing a world stadium tour, with Brian Johnson resuming his position on vocals, in 2020. Broadcaster Eddie McGuire leaked the news on his Triple M Melbourne breakfast show at the time. 'The greatest rock band in the history of Australian music will be reforming and playing in Australia in October/November this year!' he announced. 'My mail is, there will be a new album released by AC/DC in February or March this year, but also that AC/DC will be touring Australia [in] October/November 2020. 'And after a lot of work and a lot of technical research they have been able to get a hearing aid for Brian Johnson, who will be out front, and even Phil Rudd might be back in the group either playing percussion or drums.' Brian's hearing problems forced him to leave the band mid-tour in 2016. He was temporarily replaced by Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose, who served as vocalist for the band's remaining concerts. Doctors had advised the frontman, 77, to either quit performing live or face the possibility of 'total hearing loss'. 'That was the darkest day of my professional life,' Brian said of the diagnosis at the time. Eddie also claimed lead guitarist Angus Young would join the tour, as well as drummer Phil Rudd, who left the group in 2014 amid legal troubles. 'I'm hearing the album will be out February [or] March, and we'll all be banging our heads like the old days,' he added. However, rumours of AC/DC's return to Australia in 2020 fell flat as the band never announced a tour Down Under, despite releasing an album at the time. AC/DC was formed in Sydney in November 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Following the death of lead singer Bon Scott from acute alcoholic poisoning at the age of 33 in 1980, Brian was hired to replace him. Rhythm guitarist Malcolm was diagnosed with dementia in 2014 and retired to a Sydney nursing home. He died on November 18, 2017 at the age of 64.

The star of the Call on Me music video has been showing off her incredible physique 21 years after the Eric Pryd dancefloor number one. Deanne Berry, 44, now a dance instructor, showed off her ageless figure in eye-popping snaps shared to her Instagram page. In one gorgeous snap, Deanne showed off her washboard abs as she posed up a storm in a gym bralet and figure-hugging bike shorts. It has been two decades since her dance moves catapulted her to global fame in Eric Pryd's music video, but she is still showing off her skills online. Having since retired from the world of professional dancing, she now works as an online and in-person dance instructor. Deanne, who hails from Australia, specialises in 80s-inspired workshops, hen nights and events at her business Deanne Berry Bodies (DBB) Online Dance workouts. This should come as no surprise to fans of the 2004 music video, which saw her don a spandex bodysuit and headband and dance to the song that shot to the top of the UK charts. The raunchy music video and song had a clear 80s link and the track was even based on Steve Winwood's 1982 song Valerie. The video showed Deanne parading around in a thong one-piece as she wiggled her hips and showed off her moves while leading a cheeky exercise class. After its initial success, Call on Me has been reaching a new generation of fans after appearing in the new Warfare film earlier this year. It features US Navy seals watching the music video ahead of the retelling of Ray Mendoza's experiences during the Iraq War. Deanne shared a clip of the scene to her Instagram, with fans rushing to the comments section to stress that she still looks the same. They praised: 'Omg this is awesome! She must have been so excited when this came on! Fans of the former professional dancer have been praising her physique two decades on from her famous music video 'Still love this song and she's still beautiful as ever!
