Why Now?
With more Canadians than ever entering retirement age, questions about how they can be empowered to age in place with financial independence are becoming increasingly urgent. Ontario Seniors Month is a time to celebrate the contributions of older adults, and to elevate their voices and experiences. The "55 & Better" series brings forward authentic, inspiring stories about how Canadians 55+ are accessing the savings they have built in their homes, to take control of their retirement finances and live the retirement they deserve, while staying in the homes they love.
Accessing the equity and savings they have in their home is a sound financial tool available internationally, and a mainstream solution that covers the gap of limited retirement income or access to liquid capital in our golden years. Canadians do not fit the outdated stereotype of a reverse mortgage client; they are savvy, vibrant and active and are planning for life as they dreamed it. We know that almost 9 in 10 recently funded HomeEquity Bank client agree that having a CHIP Reverse Mortgage has provided them with a sense of freedom.
In-home care is another driving factor, as Canadians are looking to stay their homes rather than move to assisted living or care facilities. These personal accounts offer an inspiring and timely perspective at a time when more than 90 per cent of Canadians 45+ say they want to stay in their homes as they age.
The series launched June 5, 2025, with new stories released weekly throughout the month across digital platforms, newsletters, and social media. Viewers will meet real people who chose financial independence and dignity and discovered what it means to live the lives they want, in the homes they love thanks to HomeEquity Bank. To solve Canada's housing crisis, we need to change the way we think about wealth
Hard work in Canada has never paid less, in economic opportunity or quality of life. For most young Canadians, it doesn't really matter how much you make in dollars and cents: without family money, the big picture is largely the same. No homeownership. No path to building wealth. Delayed family formation, or none at all. This corrosive disconnect between salary and lifestyle goes to the heart of Canada's generational tensions. Outside rural areas, even a six-figure salary often means living paycheque to paycheque by the time rent, transit, food and other basic expenses are paid for. Needless to say, many young people make far less than six figures, which is why one out of every four food bank users in Ontario these days is employed.

Rejecting Trump's rhetoric, Maine's governor heads to Maritimes to build ties
HALIFAX – Maine's governor is heading to the Maritimes next week with hopes a charm offensive will slow the rapid drop in Canadian tourist visits to her state. In a release issued Friday, Janet Mills says she's aware the historically close relationship between New England and its northern neighbours has been challenged by U.S. president Donald Trump's tariffs and his rhetoric about Canada becoming the 51st state. According to U.S. federal border crossing data released Friday, 85,000 fewer Canadians entered Maine in May than in the same month a year ago, a drop of about 27 per cent. The governor says she will spend three days meeting with premiers, appearing in local media and visiting businesses in hope of sending a message that Maritimers remain 'welcome in Maine' despite Trump's trade policies. On Monday, the governor will stop in Saint John, N.B., where she intends to visit businesses with links to Maine and she then will travel to Fredericton to hold talks with New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt. On Wednesday, Mills will meet with Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston in Halifax and tour a marine technology centre. Last month, the governor unveiled new, bilingual signs welcoming Canadian visitors, which are being placed in windows around the state. On June 13, in her weekly radio address, Mills said she wants to ensure the 'historic friendship and deeply intertwined economies last for generations to come.' 'It's not just our economies – we are connected so deeply by mutual economic advantages and on centuries-old familial, cuisine, language, and cultural bonds that far supersede politics,' she told her listeners, reminding them that Canada is the United States' closest and most important trading partner. The Democratic Party member said Trump's 'roller coaster tariffs' are unsettling business in her state and 'making our Canadian neighbors feel unwelcome in the United States.' In 2024, nearly 800,000 Canadian visitors spent approximately US$498 million in Maine, according to the state's Office of Tourism. Overall, the data showed Maine welcomed 14.8 million visitors, who spent more than US$9.2 billion, supporting 115,900 jobs and generating US$5.4 billion in wages. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 21, 2025.

Media Advisory - Simultaneous launch of Canadian space technologies Français
LONGUEUIL, QC, June 21, 2025 /CNW/ - Several technologies funded by the Canadian Space Agency under the Space Technology Development Program will be launched into space by SpaceX. These projects are a testament to Canada's leadership in space innovation. EarthDaily Analytics will use high-precision thermal imagers to monitor plant transpiration. The data collected could help farmers make decisions about irrigation, fertilization and crop rotation. It could also provide precise information about areas at greatest risk of wildfires, in order to protect our communities. INO provided infrared cameras as part of this project. Galaxia will launch its first satellite, MÖBIUS-1, a software-defined satellite designed to carry various types of Earth observation sensors. The MÖBIUS constellation could be used for a variety of applications, such as defence, environmental monitoring, agriculture, infrastructure, maritime operations and transportation. GHGSat will add two satellites to its commercial constellation, bringing the company's total to 13 methane detection satellites and one CO 2 detection satellite. Mission Control will test its onboard artificial intelligence (AI) software and machine learning operations system SpacefarerAI™ in partnership with Spire Global. Their Persistence mission aims to show how AI can analyze satellite images directly in space, thereby eliminating the need to send all data to Earth for processing. Xona Space Systems will test Pulsar, a demonstration satellite designed to validate a new generation of satellite navigation from low Earth orbit. This technology could improve precision and reliability of positioning services, including in urban areas, remote areas and the Arctic. Also contributing to the GHGSat and EarthDaily Analytics satellites are ABB 's business unit in Quebec, supplying sophisticated optical sensors, and Xiphos Systems, providing high-performance onboard processors. These innovations demonstrate the ability of Canadian companies to develop innovative technologies that meet the needs of the space program and have strong commercial potential. Media who wish to speak with a Canadian Space Agency expert or a representative from one of these Canadian companies are asked to contact the Media Relations Office.
