Kansas State sharp from deep, blows out Oklahoma State

January 30 - Brendan Hausen was 5 of 5 from 3-point range en route to a team-high 18 points to lead Kansas State past Oklahoma State 85-57 on Wednesday night in Manhattan, Kan.
The Wildcats shot 52.2 (12 of 23) percent from 3-point range for the game.
Kansas State (9-11, 3-6 Big 12) has won back-to-back games by double digits after snapping a six-game losing streak. They had four players in double figures and nine different players scored. They got 15 points and nine rebounds from Coleman Hawkins, 14 from Max Jones and 10 from Dug McDaniel.
Oklahoma State (10-10, 2-7) lost for the fifth time in the last six games. The Cowboys have lost three straight, all by double digits. They were led by Marchelus Avery with 22 points. Bryce Thompson added 11 points.
Kansas State started the second half with a 12-2 run to open a 32-point lead, 57-25, and erase any thought of an OSU comeback. Oklahoma State never got closer than 20 points in the second half.
The Cowboys committed 21 turnovers, leading to 28 points for the Wildcats.
Much as they did in their last game against West Virginia, the Wildcats streaked out of the gate with a 10-0 run. OSU trimmed it to 18-11 before Hawkins hit a turnaround 3-pointer falling out of bounds midway through the first half to stretch the advantage back to 10 points.
The lead grew to 14 points at 25-11 when Hausen hit a corner 3-pointer and the accompanying free throw. Kansas State responded to a 7-0 Oklahoma State run with an 11-0 run of its own. The Wildcats closed the half on another 9-0 run to lead 45-23 at halftime.
Turnovers hurt the Cowboys, who committed 10 in the first 12 minutes. They finished the first half with 16, leading to 22 K-State points. They were led by Thompson with eight points.
Max Jones and McDaniel led K-State with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Austin Eckroat motivated by the magic of ex-landlord and Euro Ryder Cup ace Austin Eckroat admits the inspiration of Euro pal Viktor Hovland remains key in overcoming the shock and enormity of the PGA Tour. The 26-year-old displayed his obvious prowess by matching Scottie Scheffler's opening 62 at the Travelers Championship. ‌ Eckroat is a two-time winner on the main circuit having turned pro five years ago, but says he still has pinch-me moments amongst the elite. ‌ Progressed through Oklahoma State College, he and Ryder Cup Hovland are big pals and he used to rent a room from the Norwegian in his house. Eckroat explained: 'It's funny, a lot of Wednesdays I've felt really good going into the tournament and then Thursday comes around and it hasn't been there. I don't know if it's just the stress of playing in a PGA Tour. 'I wouldn't say they were role models, but my team-mates came out here immediately and had success, Viktor and Matt Wolff, and they kind of gave me the confidence going in at the time that I knew compete with them so I knew I could compete out here. 'But it's a different ball game out here. Week in, week out, you're having to grind. The mental aspect of it with playing in front of people with cameras and all that stuff, I'd say I was aware of it just because I had two buddies that had just done it, but it's still a shock when you get out here. 'This is one of my favorite events of the year outside of that, but then add in on top of that they gave me a sponsor exemption, gave me an opportunity to play with the best players in the world back in 2021 and just really thankful for Travelers and everybody involved in this event to give me that opportunity. I played well that week. I just have great memories coming back here, and it's definitely one of my favorite stops of the year. 'It's funny, the weeks that we play, they all run together now, but I remember doing a little media thing for Travelers and every now and then it'll pop up on my social media, like come back around. I don't have any logos on my shirt, I'm wearing just standard clothing. It's funny just looking back on what's happened since then. It's pretty cool. 'My college coach when I was at Oklahoma State used to always say, when you're off, you're never that far from playing good golf. And whenever you're on, you're not that far from playing bad golf. You're playing on a fine line and confidence plays a huge part in it. 'I've felt close all year and that's why I kept playing. I felt like a week was coming and it was just all going to click. I just needed one good round and I was going to be good. It just hadn't happened yet.'

Second charity cup will honour teen footballer who died from one in a billion brain tumour

At just 17 years old, Max Jones was given the same devastating cancer diagnosis that claimed the lives of both his mum and gran. A brave East Kilbride teenager who lost his battle with a rare brain cancer will be remembered in a charity football match later this month. Max Jones passed away at Kilbryde Hospice on July 13, 2023 - just nine days after his 19th birthday. ‌ At 17 Max was the youngest patient to receive palliative care at Kilbryde Hospice after being diagnosed with a "one in a billion" glioblastoma diagnosis that had claimed the lives of both his mum and gran. ‌ Honouring his memory, best friends Aidan McCabe and Aiden Farrell set up the Max Jones Charity Cup last year, an annual celebration of his life, which raised an incredible £13k for Kilbryde Hospice in memory of their heroic friend. Download the Lanarkshire Live app today After last year's success the organisers are now expanding the upcoming event to include four teams: MXJ United, Kilbryde FC, Max XI and Buckfast Rovers which are made up of Max's friends and old teammates at Claremont AFC, EKYC and East Kilbride Thistle. This year's tournament will take place on June 28 at Kirktonholme's Enviro Clean Stadium. ‌ Aiden Farrell said: "We host this event in memory of Max Jones who sadly died after a year long battle with a glioblastoma brain tumour. "Max was an energetic, fit young man who was always playing football with a football club or with friends. He spent many years playing with EKYC so to use their venue is a touching tribute to the player he was. ‌ "Max spent six months under the care of the amazing inpatient unit at Kilbryde Hospice where the care and compassion was incredible. Kilbryde staff not only cared for Max but also for all his friends and family, providing some memories that will last a lifetime." In the summer of 2022, Max was given the same devastating cancer diagnosis that claimed the lives of both his mum and gran. ‌ Heartbreakingly, he was given just weeks to live when he was admitted to the Kilbryde Hospice with the "one in a billion" series of deadly brain tumours at the beginning of last year. A professional cookery student and keen footballer, Max had just won the Claremont AFC 2004s coaches' player of the year when he was diagnosed with glioblastoma aged 17. He also played for EKYC and East Kilbride Thistle over the years. He had started getting headaches and pains in his legs and the pain became so unbearable he went to Hairmyres Hospital where a CT and MRI scan discovered the 'aggressive' stage 4 tumour on his brain. ‌ Max's gran Margaret O'Kane, from Wishaw, died from glioblastoma in October 2008, aged 66, and his mum Angie Jones, from East Kilbride, died from the disease just 14 months later, aged 36. Max was the youngest patient to receive palliative care at Kilbryde Hospice. ‌ Aidan added: "I was a close friend of Max's and spent almost every day up at the hospice while he was under their care. To see the treatment that patients receive first-hand is unbelievable and I will never forget all the things they did for us and they continue to be a great support to the whole friend group. "The hospice gave Max a new lease of life at a time where there was no hope left in his battle with cancer and for that we are eternally grateful. "So come along on June 28 to Enviro Clean Stadium and support your local hospice. They need us and we will never know when we might need them." ‌ Tickets for the event cost £5 and gates will open at 11am with the first kick off at 12pm. The tournament will consist of four games, two semi-finals, a third place playoff and a final with the final set to finish close to 5pm. Report: Villanova football leaving CAA for Patriot League

June 5 - The Villanova football program is leaving the Coastal Athletic Association to join the Patriot League, ESPN reported Thursday. The move will take effect in 2026 for the Wildcats, who joined the CAA (formerly Colonial Athletic Association) of the Football Championship Subdivision in 2007. Villanova finished 10-4 last season (6-2 CAA) and lost in the second round of the NCAA playoffs. The Patriot League's members include Bucknell, Colgate, Fordham, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Lehigh. Villanova previously competed in the Atlantic 10 (1997-2006) and Yankee conferences (1987-96). The school's basketball programs are members of the Big East Conference. --Field Level Media
