Bethell vs Pope for No.3: Rob Key feels Headingley call won't define careers

India Today3 days ago

England's managing director of men's cricket, Rob Key, doesn't feel that the careers of Jacob Bethell and OIlie Pope will be defined by the selection for the Headingley Test against India, starting from June 20. Bethell and Pope are in a direct battle for the No.3 spot for the first Test. Pope recently scored 171 in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe, while Bethell impressed everyone with three fifties during the tour of New Zealand. advertisementKey, however, doesn't see the competition as a problem for the England team management and feels it is a win-win situation for the team. The England managing director feels that it would have been an issue if they didn't have good options to fill in the slot. "I don't see it as a problem, really," Key told the Telegraph's cricket podcast. "You win either way, really. You've got two brilliant players that can do that role. Ollie Pope's been fantastic in that tough spot; he played brilliantly in New Zealand alright, he was in a different role, but we've got two brilliant options in those spots."
"A tough decision is when you've got no options, and you've got to just then try and find something from nowhere. That's when I'm sort of scratching my head. This one is: 'Which really good player are we going to pick?' It's a good position to be in."'Watching Bethell's development has been extraordinary'advertisementKey said he also had no regrets about having Bethell stay in India to play in the IPL, instead of playing the one-off Test against Zimbabwe. Key feels that England will reap the rewards of Bethell's stay in India in the future. "I don't think [that] the careers of Ollie Pope and Jacob Bethell are defined by what happens this week, or whether he came back to play the Zimbabwe Test. He may not have played that Test match," Key said. "Watching his development has been extraordinary, and him going out there and playing in the IPL, I think was brilliant for him. We'll get the return on that in the future."Must Watch

Ishan Kishan to make county debut with Nottinghamshire, inks two-match deal

India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has joined Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club on a two-match County Championship deal, the English side announced on its X (formerly twitter) handle on Friday evening. Kishan, who has played all three formats for India, will be available for selection for the first-class fixtures against Yorkshire at home ground Trent Bridge starting Sunday while the next game will be away at Taunton against Somerset. The Patna-born Jharkhand cricketer will serve as a short-term replacement for World Test Championship-winning South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne. The Protea will be away on national duty to play a two-Test series in Zimbabwe. Kishan turned out for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) where he scored a 45-ball century against Rajasthan Royals and remained unbeaten on 106 from 47 balls. "I'm feeling very excited to get my first taste of playing county cricket in England, and it will be a great chance to showcase my skills," Ishan was quoted as saying by the club website. "I want to make sure I am the best cricketer I can be, and playing in English conditions will really help me to learn new skills. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Forget Furosemide, Use This Household Item To Help Drain Edema Fluid WellnessGuide Learn more Undo Trent Bridge is such a famous ground that is well-known in India and around the world, and I am really excited that I will be playing there," the southpaw added. Meanwhile, speaking on Kishan's inclusion to the squad, Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores said, "We're all very pleased to have secured the services of Ishan for these next two Championship fixtures while Kyle is away with South Africa." A wicketkeeper-batter himself during his playing days, the former Three Lions player and coach added, "We want players to be themselves and to bring their own game, and something that especially excites me about Ishan is how keen he is to be involved in county cricket. He brings proven quality in his ball-striking, as a hard-hitting middle-order batter, but while he's still developing his red-ball game, this spell will be really beneficial for him, and for us. "

Rishabh Pant sensed danger one ball before losing his wicket, told Ravindra Jadeja 'Same jagah maare ja raha hai'

Rishabh Pant overcame the tough IPL season, and the switch to Test cricket instantly helped him regain form. The left-handed batter scored a brilliant century in the opening Test match against England at Leeds. Pant, playing his first match as vice-captain in Tests, owned the stage with his outrageous shots all around the park to hit his seventh century in the format. He once again displayed his fearless approach against a team that is known for their ultra-attacking Bazball approach, and reached the century with a six. A few labelled his dismissal a brain-fade moment, but the broadcasters showcased a video after his dismissal of the ball prior to Tongue trapping him. Pant was seen telling his batting partner Ravindra Jadeja, 'Sooja diya hai yaar isne maar-maar ke, same jagah maare ja raha hai(My knee is swelled up, he is hitting me in the same place).' On the next delivery, Tongue bowled a delivery which nipped back in and hit his pads again but this time he got dismissed LBW. It was his first Test century since September 2024 when he scored 109 against Bangladesh. In 90 Tests, Dhoni had scored 4,876 runs with six tons and 33 fifties at an average of 38.09 and remains the highest run-scorer as an Indian wicketkeeper-batter in Tests. Pant, who completed 3,000 runs during this innings of 134 off 178 balls (12x4; 6x6), also has 15 fifties in 44 Tests and averages nearly 44. Pant's performance drew praise from batting great Sachin Tendulkar, who commended the wicketkeeper-batter's clever use of technique—particularly highlighting his well-executed paddle sweep as a mark of smart, situational batting. "Rishabh's falling paddle sweep is not accidental. It is intentional and extremely clever. Going down with the shot allows him to get under the ball and scoop it over leg slip with control," Tendulkar wrote on his social media handle.

Rishabh Pant Back At It! Hilarious Conversation With Jamie Smith Goes Viral

Last Updated: Rishabh Pant's hilarious banter with Jamie Smith during the Headingley Test highlighted his dynamic 134-run knock. Star India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was seen having a hilarious banter with England counterpart Jamie Smith, even as the latter looked to alert the fielders to stop the Indian batters from running too many runs. Pant was the star of the show in the first session of Day 2 of the Headingley Test. A collapse on either side of lunch on Saturday, June 21, saw India lose their last seven wickets for 41 runs inside 12 overs despite Pant 's dynamic 134. The runs continued to flow as wicketkeeper Pant, 65 not out overnight, went to a century in spectacular style. 'No twos," Smith told his fielders during one of Shoaib Bashir's overs. 'Yeah, if he gives me a full toss, no twos. He's bowling well," Pant replied. Watch the video here: Pant charged down the track to Bashir before hoisting the latter high over deep midwicket for six despite one hand coming off the bat. Pant's seventh century in 44 Tests and fourth against England, came off 146 deliveries including 10 boundaries and four sixes in an aggressive knock. Pant then celebrated his hundred with an acrobatic somersault. He smashed another six off Bashir as skipper Shubman Gill continued to score elegantly. But just when England were wondering where their next wicket was coming from, Gill's mistimed pick-up shot off Bashir flew straight to Brydon Carse at deep square leg as the captain fell for 147. Gill's exit ended a stand of 209 in 49 overs with Pant, which had taken India to 430/4 and opened the door for a flurry of wickets to give England hope. Pant, having played a succession of extraordinary strokes, was LBW, offering no shot to Josh Tongue to end a knock that featured 84 runs in fours. Shardul Thakur was caught behind off England skipper Ben Stokes to force an early lunch before Tongue polished off the tail with a three-wicket burst.
