Manchester City CEO Soriano excited by global impact of new Club World Cup
Manchester City's chief executive Ferran Soriano said he was excited by the way the revamped 32-team Fifa Club World Cup was driving football's globalisation, with the Spaniard believing the holders can embrace the tournament's expanded format and still be relevant to their domestic fanbase.
Pep Guardiola's side beat Morocco's Wydad 2-0 on Wednesday in Philadelphia in their opening group game as they began their defence of a title claimed two years ago in the competition's last seven-club iteration.
Soriano said of the new format: 'We are very excited by it. It's something that was very much needed. Soccer is a global sport and we have to make it global. You have to have teams like Manchester City playing teams from Morocco, Korea or wherever. That's part of the globalisation of the No 1 sport in the world. It's a great initiative and we are very happy to be here.
'It's very important to be here because we are a global football club. We have our roots and we are proud of them. But you can be local and relevant and faithful to the history of the club and the fans that support you, but you can also be global and show what we do – which we believe is beautiful football – to the world. It's a combination that works very well and we are proud.'
Goals from Phil Foden and Jérémy Doku secured the defeat of Wydad as Guardiola gave debuts to Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki, two of his eight new recruits in the past two windows.
Soriano said: 'I'm happy with the work that we did. This is part of multi-annual planning. Last summer we only bought one new player [Savinho, while Ilkay Gündogan returned on a free transfer] but this year between the winter and the summer it will be eight new ones.
'It's part of the annual cycle, the renewal of the squad. We accelerated some of it and now we are very happy with the squad we have. It's part of the game [to refresh]. We look for stability, the fact that Pep is going to be with us for 10 years shows that we are a stable club.

'But the squad needs to be renewed. It's something that happens naturally. We've had fantastic players like Kevin De Bruyne who spent a decade with us. That's a testament to his quality but also our stability.'

The revelation that Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders had been caught speeding by police in the city didn't come as a surprise to law enforcement. Yesterday, it was revealed that Sanders was pulled over in the suburb of Strongsville on Tuesday by authorities who issued a citation. The rookie quarterback out of Colorado was clocked driving at 101mph, 41 miles over the posted speed limit. Nearly a day later, it's been revealed that this is the second time this month that Sanders has been stopped for reckless driving. Back on June 6, Sanders was stopped in another Cleveland suburb - Brunswick Hills - by the Ohio State Patrol. According to records, Sanders was pulled over for driving 91 mph in a 65 mph zone at 12:24 in the morning. A spokesperson for the team told that the team has addressed the citations with the rookie. "He is taking care of the tickets," team spokesman Peter John-Baptiste told the media outlet. For the June 6 incident, Sanders faces $269 in fines and court costs for his recklessness. As for the most recent ticket, he has the choice of either paying the $250 fine or fighting the fourth-degree misdemeanor charge in court on July 3. Sanders was tipped by many - his own father included - to be a top-five draft pick. But the former Colorado quarterback suffered one the most shocking slides in NFL history. He was eventually selected by Cleveland in the fifth round with the 144th overall pick - not before the Browns had taken ex-Oregon star Dillon Gabriel.

Yankees bats finally awaken to avoid 4-game sweep to Angels
June 19 - Trent Grisham and Paul Goldschmidt hit back-to-back home runs as the host New York Yankees stopped a season-high six-game losing streak with a 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday afternoon. Carlos Rodon (9-5) overcame allowing three solo homers and pitched six quality innings as the Yankees avoided losing seven straight for the first time since a nine-game slide from Aug. 12-22, 2023. It also halted New York's five-game home losing streak. The teams played through an eight-minute rain delay after the Angels batted in the second and 35-minute stoppage in the eighth. The Yankees' offense exceeded their run total from their six-game slide (six). Grisham and Goldschmidt went deep in the second inning off Tyler Anderson (2-5) to make it 4-2 after Giancarlo Stanton had an RBI groundout in the first. Cody Bellinger collected three hits with an RBI single in the seventh for a 5-3 lead as the Yankees finished with 12 hits. Anthony Volpe added an RBI groundout and Austin Wells lifted a sacrifice fly following the second delay. Rodon allowed solo homers to Mike Trout, Jo Adell and Taylor Ward but held the Angels to four hits and improved to 8-2 in his past 12 starts. The left-hander struck out seven, walked one and notched several outs with his slider. The Angels were unable to complete their first four-game sweep of the Yankees in team history. Los Angeles also saw a team-record five-game winning streak at Yankee Stadium halted and came up shy of reaching .500 for the first time since May 23. Trout opened the scoring by hammering Rodon's 1-1 fastball into the Los Angeles bullpen beyond the left-center-field fence for his third homer since being activated off the injured list. After Goldschmidt doubled, he took third on an infield single by Bellinger and scored when Stanton was able to avoid a double play. Adell gave the Angels a 2-1 lead by hammering a 1-0 fastball into the right-center-field seats. Following a two-out single by DJ LeMahieu, Grisham hit Anderson's first-pitch sinker to the right field bleachers and Goldschmidt followed with a shot down the left field line. Anderson allowed four on eight hits in six innings. The left-hander struck out four, walked two and lost his fifth straight decision.
