Diamondbacks RHP Corbin Burnes will undergo Tommy John surgery
Arizona Diamondbacks ace Corbin Burnes is officially set to undergo Tommy John surgery and miss at least the remainder of the 2025 season. This news comes three days after Burnes sought a second opinion on the inflammation in his right elbow from Los Angeles-based doctor Neal El Attrache.
Burnes originally sustained the elbow injury on June 1 during a start against the Washington Nationals. Arizona led 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning when Burnes allowed a single by CJ Abrams with two outs. The right-hander then gestured toward the dugout with his glove and yelled in frustration.
Burnes allowed a run and four hits in 4 2/3 innings, with a walk and six strikeouts. Following the shortened start, he was placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. Now, he'll receive Tommy John surgery and miss an extended period of time.
He is 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 11 starts this season.
Arizona signed Burnes to a $210 million, six-year contract before the season, and the 30-year-old has been very durable over the past several years. He's made at least 28 starts in every season since he won the 2021 National League Cy Young Award for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Burnes' injury is yet another problem in a season that has already seen the D-backs go just 31-31 with a negative run differential, putting them in fourth place, 6.5 games back in a competitive NL West and 3.5 back of a wild card spot. Arizona missed the 2024 postseason due to losing the tiebreaker for the final wild card spot to the Mets.
The D-backs called up left-hander Tommy Henry to take Burnes' spot on the roster. He's pitched in one game this season, throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

Eagles' Jordan Davis hosting free football clinic with Philly-area violence prevention org
A Philadelphia nonprofit is partnering with an Eagles player to offer more than football drills. It's creating a safe space for young boys to develop character, confidence and a sense of community. Open Door Abuse Awareness and Prevention, founded by coach Valencia "Coach V" Peterson, is hosting a free football clinic on Saturday, June 21, at Mastery Charter from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is open to all 10-year-old boys across Philadelphia. "By age 12, their mindset is already changing," Peterson said. "By 14, they could be caught up in violence. We want to reach them before that happens, before intervention becomes the only option." Between drills, athletes will learn how to process emotions, de-escalate conflict and support each other — on and off the field. "In between drills, we teach a principle about violence prevention. Then we get them right back into the game," Peterson said. "It sticks." Joining the clinic is Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jordan Davis, who hopes to show young boys the power of discipline and teamwork. "I could talk all day about the way that football has helped me in my life, personally, and I feel like it's my duty to give that to someone else," Davis said. "When your mind is the clearest, it's on the football field." Coach V says the field is where boys learn to be men, and brothers. "I've seen the change in boys over my 10 years in this work," Peterson said. "Football is just the tool. We're building something bigger." Select teams will also receive a $3,000 grant to support local neighborhood sports.

Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh is leading Major League Baseball in home runs during the 2025 season, following Friday's games. Raleigh has 29 home runs and 63 RBIs for the Mariners in 2025. He went 3-for-4 and hit two home runs in Seattle's, 9-4, victory over the Cubs. He also recorded four runs, three RBIs and one walk. He set a record for most home runs by a catcher before the All-Star break. The previous mark of 28 was set by Johnny Bench in 1970. Raleigh played at Florida State and was an All-America standout. He was selected in the third round of the 2018 MLB draft (No. 90 overall) by the Mariners and debuted on July 11, 2021. Raleigh earned Gold Glove Award and Platinum Glove Award honors in 2024. He is the son of former Tennessee head coach Todd Raleigh. Todd Raleigh coached the Vols from 2008-11. At Tennessee, he compiled a 108-113 (42-78 SEC) record in four seasons. Paige Bueckers had 21 points and seven assists in the former UConn star's return to Connecticut, fellow rookie Aziaha James scored all of her season-high 17 points in the second half, and the Dallas Wings beat the Connecticut Sun 86-83 on Friday night. Bueckers and James are the lone rookies this season to record a 15-point, 5-rebound, 5-assist game, with Bueckers doing so three times.
