UFC faces increased pressure to strip Jon Jones of heavyweight title after petition skyrockets
The UFC continues to face mounting pressure from fans to strip Jon Jones of his heavyweight title after a petition surged to almost 140,000 signatures.
The Change petition has called for the legendary American to be removed as undisputed heavyweight king in the UFC, with Tom Aspinall patiently waiting for his opportunity as interim champion.
The Briton has not fought since beating Curtis Blaydes by knockout last July and has grown tired of waiting for Jones to make a decision on his future, with conflicting comments suggesting the 37-year-old could opt to retire.
With just over 138,000 signature at the time of writing, Dana White continues to face calls to make a definitive decision on Jones' future, with negotiations continuing to drag.
The petition claims Jones has 'refused' to fight Aspinall, and that the 32-year-old is poised and ready to fight the American.
'We as fans must let Dana White know: It is time to strip Jon Jones of the heavyweight title. He clearly has no intentions of fighting anytime soon,' the petition concluded.
The latest comments in a war of words between both sides has seen Jones fire back at his rival, ordering him to 'shut up and do what you're told'.
In one of the most controversial UFC sagas in recent memory, Jones and Aspinall continue to hold a heavyweight title each, without having a unification bout booked.
Jones, a former two-time light-heavyweight champion, won the vacant heavyweight belt in March 2023, but a planned defence against divisional great Stipe Miocic collapsed later that year when Jones suffered an injury. Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich stepped up, with the Briton knocking out the Russian to win the interim title, while Jones's clash with Miocic was delayed by 12 months.
Last November, Jones stopped his fellow American to retain the regular belt, seemingly setting up a fight with Aspinall, who retained the interim strap last July.
However, Jones has continued to play coy over the prospect of that contest coming to fruition. As such, Aspinall opened up on the mental toll of the saga this week, telling UFC legend Demetrious Johnson: 'I've been almost a year inactive with no prospects of anything apart from 'wait'. So, now it's actually a bit more of a tricky time for me mentally than it was [when I was out for 12 months with an injury, from 2023 until 2024].
'Now, it's just like: 'Just be ready and we'll just let you know.' It's kind of difficult mentally, but this is the fight against Jon Jones. The fight is another thing, this is the tricky bit where I really have to stay switched on, stay motivated, and I'm trying my best. It's tough sometimes.'
Verdict MMA shared the 32-year-old's quotes on Instagram, and 37-year-old Jones commented, 'Shut your mouth and do as you're told,' along with a laughing emoji.
The comment comes during a week in which Jones has been as vague as ever over the chances of him fighting Aspinall.
In one video, he said, 'I'm done,' though he tweeted on the same day: 'I don't know if I wanna call it retired, I feel like I'll always have an ability to pop out and show em. I've had many breaks throughout my career, my identity outside of fighting is well intact. I'm genuinely enjoying life, I'm growing in different ways.'
And earlier in the week, he tweeted: 'Yall barkin up the wrong tree. I told the Ufc my plans a long time ago. I have no clue why they haven't shared them with you guys yet.
'Lol do I come across as the type of person who cares about things like [being stripped of the title]? [...] This, this attitude, right here is making me a very wealthy man. This desperation [from fans] is incredibly lucrative, so thank you. Keep it coming.'
With the UFC , Jones vs Aspinall is unlikely to happen before October. UFC president Dana White did vow this month that he would soon announce the bout, but fans continue to await such an announcement.

Democrats will not side with Israel against Iran, poll shows
Democrats cannot bring themselves to side with Israel against Iran's authoritarian regime and pursuit of nuclear weapons, according to a new poll shared with The Telegraph. The polling found that a little more than a third sided with Israel in the Middle East, with only eight per cent saying Iran. But some 52 per cent of Democrats in the survey of 1039 registered voters said they could not pick sides between a Jewish democracy or an Islamic theocracy. The issue illustrates how the party is struggling for clear leadership in the wake of their presidential election defeat, with their base shifting far to the left, said James Johnson, co-founder of JL Partners, which conducted the poll. 'It doesn't take much to shock me any more but I was genuinely gobsmacked by this finding,' he said. 'We know that Democrats have tended to oppose arming Israel, and have expressed concern about Israel's foreign policy. But this poll steps into a totally different order of magnitude: Democrat voters are so coloured by their view of Israel, that they cannot bring themselves to wholly condemn Iran. Instead they opt to sit on the fence.' Kamala Harris, the party's 2024 presidential candidate, lost support among Arab-Americans last year because of the Biden administration's support for Israel's war in Gaza. And the poll results could explain why so many potential 2028 candidates have steered clear of the Israel-Iran conflict and avoided offering their thoughts as they try to work out where Democratic voters stand. The poll was conducted at the start of this week after Israel launched strikes on Iran, prompting a barrage of missiles fired in return. The escalation has taken the Middle East to the brink of a regional war and Donald Trump, US president, is w eighing whether to send heavy bombers to obliterate Tehran's nuclear ambitions. A majority of Americans (59 per cent) said they backed Israel. That figure rose to 80 per cent among Trump voters and to 80 per cent among Republicans more broadly. Democrats said they were unsure. Only 36 per cent said they backed Israel. At the same time, Mr Trump is under intense pressure from many of his allies not to intervene in the conflict. Populists such as Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News anchor, have accused him of allowing 'warmongers' to get in his ear, after campaigning last year to avoid any future foreign entanglements. The result is the threat of a fracture within the Maga coalition, between its 'America First' wing and more traditionally hawkish Republicans. The new poll suggests there is a reckoning on the other side of the political spectrum as Democrats weigh whether to back Israel in its quest to end Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons. The party has already struggled with splits over the US role in Gaza, where almost 50,000 have been killed since Israel launched its response to the October 7 Hamas attacks. While Joe Biden's administration backed the Israeli government, progressives including Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian-American congresswoman, described it as a genocide. And the Israeli strikes on Iran triggered opposing responses from senior figures. Jackie Rosen, a Democratic senator from Nevada who sits on the armed services committee, said: 'Israel acted in self-defence against an attack from Iran, and the US must continue to stand with Israel, as it has for decades, at this dangerous moment.' But others condemned the strikes for disrupting negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme. Pramila Jayapal, a congresswoman from the progressive wing of the party, said: 'Netanyahu must not be allowed to pull America into another forever war. Instead, we must immediately push for negotiated de-escalation.' It could prove a particularly tricky needle to thread for some of the party's 'big beasts' who have an eye on the 2028 presidential race. Ms Harris, the former vice-president, Pete Buttigieg, who was Joe Biden's US transportation secretary, and Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, have all stayed silent. Mr Johnson added: 'This, coupled with other findings in the poll, suggest that put simply, Democrat voters have a serious problem with the Jewish state of Israel. 'Such a position is so wildly out of step with the American people as a whole that it could cripple Democrat candidates in their campaigns next year - and should be a central concern as Democratic primary seasons get under way.'

Diddy locked eyes with us as he entered the courtroom - inside the trial of the decade By Israel S-Rodriguez, Senior News Reporter at The U.S. Sun The federal sex trafficking trial of Sean 'Diddy' Combs began with jury selection on May 5. Combs is standing trial at the Southern District of New York Courthouse in Lower Manhattan - an intimidating federal courthouse where the cases of Ghislaine Maxwell, Donald Trump, and Bernard Madoff, among others, were tried. Once a powerful founder of a music and business empire, Combs has been reduced to a defendant, inmate 37452-054, stripped of his mogul status, and now standing trial on five federal charges with the full wrath of the United States government against him. When I attended Day 3 of jury selection at the federal courthouse on May 7, the buzz around the start of the trial was palpable. Hours before the courthouse opened its doors, more than a dozen reporters and members of the public stood in line in hopes of securing a seat in the gallery for the high-profile trial. As you walk through the glass door entrance of the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse, you are met by bulletproof vest-clad court officers. All visitors must separate their electronic devices from their personal belongings, which are passed through a metal detector. Visitors walk through a metal detector before a court officer hands them a poker chip. The courthouse uses a poker chip system to sort the number of electronic devices visitors are in possession of. I attended trial again as opening statements got underway on May 12 and the world media waited anxiously outside the federal courthouse before the sun rose in Lower Manhattan. At least three overflow rooms were made available for reporters and the public, who are eager to witness the prosecutions case against the music mogul.
