Guns, silencers, drugs seized in raids
Police say officers seized 30 guns and more $60,000 worth of drugs in a joint investigation targeting a network of cocaine and firearms traffickers throughout the province.
The Winnipeg Police Service and Manitoba RCMP launched Project Quarry in November.
After obtaining warrants, officers searched homes and vehicles on the 100 blocks of Somerville Avenue and Strauss Drive in Winnipeg, on 3rd Avenue and on Oak Drive in Stonewall, and at two locations in the surrounding Rural Municipality of Rockwood between March 17 and March 19.
Five people — two Winnipeg women, ages 46 and 23, two Stonewall men, ages 47 and 36, and a 48-year-old Rockwood man — are charged with a total of 53 drug and gun offences, the WPS said.
The firearms included handguns, rifles and shotguns, and police also found ammunition.
'Some of the guns had been reported stolen, while others were smuggled into Canada. Investigators also seized illegal accessories, such as silencers and devices that can convert guns to fire automatically,' the WPS said in a news release Thursday.
Police also seized $60,000 worth of cocaine and hydromorphone, drug packaging and trafficking materials, and crash.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Jets fan wanted for downtown assault shortly before first playoff game
Police are seeking to identify a Winnipeg Jets fan who assaulted a man downtown, causing serious and long-term injuries, before the team's first game of the Stanley Cup playoffs. A 34-year-old man was found unconscious after he hit his head on the pavement while being assaulted by a stranger on the first 100 block of Navy Way at about 5 p.m. on April 19. The victim was transported to hospital with a head injury and later released. 'He will require further medical treatment for his injuries and is likely to have a lengthy recovery,' the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Friday, calling the incident a 'serious assault.' Investigators learned an argument started after the suspect caused 'a disturbance' outside the victim's home. When the victim went outside, he was 'immediately' thrown to the ground. The WPS major crimes unit spoke to witnesses, who described the attacker as tall, white, 25 to 30 years old, with shaggy brown hair and a short brown beard. He was wearing light blue jeans, white Nike runners with a black Swoosh, and a blue Jets Jersey with the current logo and the last name and number, 33, of retired defenceman Dustin Byfuglien. Tuesdays A weekly look at politics close to home and around the world. The man was last seen running north towards Smith Street. Police released two images of the man. The incident happened shortly before the puck dropped for Game 1 of the Jets' first-round playoff series with the St. Louis Blues. About 5,000 fans were at a Jets whiteout street party outside Canada Life Centre that started before the game. Police reported no major incidents in connection with the Game 1 street party. The major crimes unit asked anyone with information about the attacker to contact them at 204-986-6219, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online. The news release did not say why police waited two months to announce the incident. fpcity@

Create Account RCMP say they were called Wednesday to a robbery in Thompson, 700 kilometres north of Winnipeg, where a woman went up to a girl riding a bike and asked for the bag of food she was carrying. A bystander saw the whole thing and chased the woman away before bringing the child to safety. Mounties say the girl wasn't seriously hurt and didn't need medical attention. They say officers arrested a 22-year-old woman who matched the description given to them by the girl and the bystander. The accused has been charged with robbery, causing a disturbance and two counts of resisting arrest, and has been remanded into custody. MMA NHL Canada Toronto & GTA Editorial Cartoons
